As yet another week wanes, it's time to look back and take stock of all the cool things that happened in the social and mobile games industry. For starters, I began my new position as Gamezebo's Assistant Editor, so--hi! It's very nice to be here, and thank you all (especially Jim) for putting up with me as I staggered through my first week. With that out of the way, we have news about Angry Birds Land (the Angriest Place on Earth), EA's Battlefield3: Aftershock shame, and Justin Bieber's hatred for iOS parodies of his sparkling self.
Game Closure turns down Facebook, Zynga, secures $12 million for HTML 5, mobile gaming
If you owned a small company and Zynga asked you to sell yourself for a dump truck full of money, what would you do? While most of us would probably jump into that pile of money Scrooge McDuck-style, Game Closure, which assembled a coveted HTML 5-based multiplayer software development kit, has politely declined and will continue to do things its own way.
Rovio CEO talks Angry Birds, growth, and future prospects
Rovio, the studio behind the enormously popular Angry Birds franchise, is flying higher than ever (and will in fact be taking Angry Birds beyond the stratosphere later this spring). But while it's true that a merchandizing blitz has helped the Angry Birds explode out of the confines of the mobile games market, the fact remains that it seems as if Rovio is (ahem) putting all its eggs into one basket.

Apple takes a bite out of Chomp to solve its app discovery problem
Chomp was created to be acquired by Apple. One, the company is named Chomp, meaning that in the event of being bought by Apple, journalists like myself would have a field day with the puns (hence, my clever title). Two, Chomp's product is a Google for apps, for iOS and, more recently, Android.Given the challenges of finding apps in Apple's increasingly burgeoing App Store, it only seems natural to learn that Apple has acquired Chomp (as initially reported by Techcrunch) to the tune of $50 million.
Facebook to work more closely with European game developers
The Guardian is reporting that Facebook is in the process of creating a dedicated gaming team in Europe similar in scope to what they're already doing in the US. "In the US, we have a team of engineers, product managers and partnerships folks who only do gaming, from Zynga down to two-person shops," said Christian Hernandez, director of business development and partnerships at Facebook. "Now we're creating that same unit in Europe too."
Finnish newspaper puts Rovio valuation at $6 Billion
You know how you and your friends are always kicking yourselves for not coming up with the idea for Angry Birds? Well kick a little harder, because Finnish newspaper Arvopaper is claiming that Rovio, the company that made the game, is worth over 6 billion dollars. How did they come to that number? Well that's the thing… We don't really know.
