X-Rainbow Review
X-Rainbow is a Breakout game at its core: colorful rows of blocks dominate the screen, susceptible only to a ball shot by the player's touch. With a few ideas borrowed from Peggle and a handful of unique puzzle mechanics added in, this newcomer should have proven a great addition to the brick-breaking family. Unfortunately, good genes don't guarantee success, and X-Rainbow falls far short of its potential.
The Raven: Episode 1 – The Eye of the Sphinx Review
The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief: Episode 1 - The Eye of the Sphinx is more than just a point-and-click adventure. It's a wonderfully-realized Agatha Christie-style murder mystery that wouldn't be out of place airing as a six-part serial on PBS. It's not a particularly difficult game, but the outstanding voice acting and lively, exciting story do a masterful job of recreating an early-60's tale of theft, murder, obsession, and one man's quest to prove his worth to the world.
Pac-Man Dash! Review
For as much as gaming has managed to change and evolve over the years, there have always been a few iconic characters that manage to stick around through all the ups and the downs. Pac-Man is certainly one of those icons, and embracing the world of mobile gaming in 2013, the hungry little yellow man returns in his first attempt at an endless runner game. As you might expect, Pac-Man Dash! puts players in the role of Pac-Man himself, as he runs through a number of gorgeous 3D environments, scooping up all those tiny yellow dots (called "cookies" in the game), eating fruit, and turning ghosts blue.
Zombies!!! Review
The original board game of Zombies!!! was a very divisive title. On the one hand, everyone loves the hungry undead, and the game somehow managed to cram a hundred tiny plastic braineaters into one cheap box. On the other hand, it got criticised for a lack of strategy and excessive playtime. Now it's finally shambled onto iOS.
Ravenmark: Mercenaries Review
Witching Hour Studios doesn't play when it comes to its strategy games. After blessing mobile gamers with the well-received Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion two years ago, the studio returns to the same setting for Ravenmark: Mercenaries. And while asynchronous multiplayer is the big story, it's not the only reason that this free-to-play game of tactical war-gaming is worth some storage space on your iOS device.
Breach & Clear Review
Mobile gamers are used to seeing the occasional "Coming soon" message. A precedent made famous by the Angry Birds series, mobile developers have developed a tendency to tease future updates by leaving un-selectable options on the menu with a "Coming soon" notice attached. Breach & Clear is a shining example of what happens when teasing future content is taken to a new level, leaving behind a half-finished game that isn't all too fun to begin with.
Mystery Trackers: Silent Hollow Review
In my last Mystery Trackers review, I mentioned worrying that one day the series would let me down. After all, one company can only crank out hits for so long; then again, if you're Elephant Games, the usual rules might not apply. Having seemed at first a knock-off of Big Fish's own Mystery Case Files, Mystery Trackers has now officially eclipsed that franchise both in terms of game concepts and execution, as its latest title, Mystery Trackers: Silent Hollow clearly demonstrates.
Fizzy Factory Review
There's no shortage of Arukone-inspired puzzles on the App Store: Flow Free is the most well-known, but games like Wire Storm, Number Link, and Lost Cubes all require players to connect two like ends via a single, unbroken line. Fizzy Factory follows in the colorful footsteps of these puzzle predecessors, but introduces a bevy of original ideas that makes its experience new, challenging, and refreshingly fun.
