GAMEVIL is looking to spend $10 million to partner with developers
By Jim Squires
If someone had stopped you five years ago and told you that mobile phones would become the hottest new market for games developers, you'd probably have laughed yourself into a coma. But thanks to the advent of smartphones, app stores, and the growth of the small development scene, that's exactly where we are today. GAMEVIL is a company that knows this well. With popular franchises like Zenonia and Baseball Superstars under their belts, they've become a name that gamers can trust when it comes to mobile gaming. Now they want to grow, and they can't do it alone - so they're ready to spend $10 million to bring the great games of others to the GAMEVIL brand.Order & Chaos’ first big content update now live
By Jim Squires
When word first broke back in May that Order & Chaos Online was getting its first major content update, we couldn't have been more excited. As a game that's trying to compete on the same level as PC MMO's, major content updates were an absolute must - but as a publisher, this isn't something that Gameloft has had a terrific track record with. It looks like past performance isn't always indicative of future behaviour, though, as only two months after the game's worldwide release, iOS gamers are being treated to a free bundle of fresh new content.Google+ to Facebook: Game On!
By Joel Brodie
Google released its latest social endeavour, Google+, this week. Unlike Google's past social attempts, Google+ is actually good, featuring a lot of what Facebook offers, Apple-inspired graphics, and a slick approach to friends and privacy ("Circles"). And according to Google's blog, they've only just begun. So, what's next? According to someone very geekly who tipped off Engadget, the source code on the Google+ site suggests it's Google Games and Questions. There literally is a reference to game invites in Google's source code. How to Start a Games Development Studio – Part 2: the Business Side
My last blog article looked at the creative side and if you've not read it yet, I'd suggest starting there. Now let's look at the business side of starting a games studio. Again note; neither is an exhaustive list of all the issues nor a fool-proof guide to making games. Making games requires lots of hard work, but the pay-off of seeing people having fun with your creation is often worth it.Rising above Apple’s Ban on Incentivized Installs: Innovation is Key to Monetization
Mobile phones have evolved from bulky handsets to slim feature phones to ever-popular smartphones. The advent of smartphones has provided the foundation for the rapid adoption of casual gaming on mobile phones. Gaming developers are seizing the opportunity to monetize this new media, but struggle to drive more users to download their game. To combat this problem, user acquisition strategies were born, and none quite as successful as the incentivized install, which relied on the demand for one game's virtual currency to promote the discovery and install of another.PopCap reportedly being bought for $1 billion. ZUMA!
By Joel Brodie
Techcrunch is reported a rumor that someone is close to buying PopCap Games for $1 billion. That's right, I said it - $1 billion … dollars!Techcrunch speculates on who the buyer may be. Rumors were that Zynga was looking very closely at PopCap but got scared off by the big price tag. There is always Electronic Arts, but with their own valuation of $5 billion, $1 billion sounds awfully high. Other good candidates are companies from Asia, especially since this has been an area of huge investment for PopCap in the past few years. How to Start a Games Development Studio – Part 1: The Creative Side
Over the last few years a combination of the connectivity offered by the Internet, easily available development tools such as Flash or UDK, and a proliferation of new platforms such as iPhone and Android has meant that making and publishing games has never been easier. Stories abound of a handful of people who have made their fortunes from simple yet popular games ideas such as Angry Birds or Minecraft. It has been said that we all have at least one novel inside us - does that translate to games too? I am going to take a look at how we might extract those games ideas from your head into playable experiences you can share or sell.Tapjoy launches fund to help developers port to Android
By Jim Squires
Apple's App Store is a big place. It's a big place that's full of small, wonderful, and imaginative developers. Some of those developers have spread their wings to the Android platform. Others haven't, and it's not necessarily due to a lack of interest - a lot of these fine folks simply lack the funds or skills needed to port their games from one device to another. Tapjoy is looking to help select developers jump these hurdles with their new $5 million Tapjoy Android Fund.
