The Best Games of 2013: 20+13 Edition
By Jim Squires
If 2013 proved anything to us, it's this: video games get better every year. For our year-end retrospective, we decided that we'd try something different this year: we'd pick the top 20 games from everything we covered this year to select the very best. But the list was too good to contain it to just twenty games. So with the year 2013 coming to a close, we thought it fitting to select the best 20+13 games. We're still going to count down the top twenty - but before we do, we wanted to mention thirteen tremendously good games that were deserving of your attention this year. They didn't quite make the top 20, but if there's a single game in our +13 you've missed, now's the time to fix that.Save $5 on Don’t Starve

Indie game developer Tale of Tales launched a bundle to commemorate a decade of game development. Unlike most bundles, the "Experiments and Prototypes Bundle" features some of Tale of Tales' unreleased game prototypes. All income generated by the bundle will go into Tale of Tales' next project. Tale of Tales was founded in 2003 by Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn. Focused more on creating art, rather than a game, the pair always make it a point to release their titles online and for an inexpensive price."As designers we hope that videogames can be as diverse and meaningful as any other medium," Tale of Tales explains on their website. "We want to create playful experiences that appeal to both gamers and non-gamers. We try to design expressive interfaces to access engaging poetic narratives through simple controls."Chase down Santa’s cookie-stealing elves in Christmas Cookie Craze
In the recent Ludum Dare 28 game jam and competition, thousands of developers submitted their games as a show of skill, in pride of what they accomplished during the 48-hour competition or the 72-hour game jam. One of those games is UndergroundPixel's Christmas Cookie Craze, a fun (and festive) platformer. The theme for Ludum Dare 28 was "You Only Get One" and UndergroundPixel wove the theme into their game by making it the game's catalyst. In Christmas Cookie Craze, Santa comes home to the North Pole after delivering presents all night, eager to sit down and relax with milk and cookies. For whatever reason, Santa's pesky elves decided that he can only have one cookie. Understandably, the big guy is a bit upset and so he goes on the hunt for any cookie-hoarding elf he can get his hands on.Daedalic changes Blackguards based on Steam Early Access feedback
Blackguards developer Daedalic Entertainment recently released a trailer for their turn-based strategy game, showcasing the praise the game is receiving from the community. Blackguards is currently participating in Steam's Early Access program, allowing interested gamers to jump into the current pre-release build of the game, in order to provide feedback to the developers at Daedalic Entertainment. In a press release issued to media outlets, Daedalic Entertainment Senior Producer, Kai Fiebig, said, "To us, the Early Access has been very beneficial. We gathered a lot of important and constructive fan-feedback during the first weeks of Early Access and will add features according to the feedback until the game's release."One of the biggest changes Daedalic Entertainment has planned is the implementation of advanced character customization options. The Humble Puppy Bundle features Revenge of the Titans, Droid Assault, and more

By Joe Jasko
Nyamyam has released a brand new trailer for their whimsical pop-up book adventure game Tengami today, and as that big old title at the top of this page would suggest, it's absolutely gorgeous. It's so gorgeous, in fact, that I'm not even going to sit here and tell you what goes on in the trailer. Nope, I'm making you click that button just below and watch it for yourself! (Don't worry - you're totally going to thank me later).Hmm, now I don't know what to write about in the meantime while you're busy feasting your eyes on all of the beautiful colors and quiet imagery of Tengami coming to life. Well, this is kind of awkward. I should probably get some dinner soon. I'm thinking takeout tonight; don't want to set off the smoke alarm while trying to cook a cheeseburger again like last night.Oh, oops - you're all finished watching now? What did I tell you? Gorgeous to the nth degree. So before you go hit that replay button and get lost in the magical world of Tengami all over again, just let me remind you that the game is currently slated for an iOS release sometime in early 2014, with a PC and Mac version planned for later down the road.Free Games and Sales: BIT.TRIP RUN!, Kentucky Route Zero and more!
By Joe Jasko
They say that the holidays are a time for everyone's generosity to come out and play. Whether that means buying everyone in your family mountains of presents, or simply letting someone move in front of you in line, it's clear that everyone is in a rather giving mood this time of year. And I don't know about you, but there's no gift I'd rather receive that a shiny new and discounted game!As far as gaming sales are concerned this week, why, the biggest internet storefronts might as well be charitable organizations themselves, because the amount of price cuts we've seen going on right now is generous to the extreme. From massive deals that spread all across the App Store, visiting the Humble Bundle camp, and then finishing big with the annual Steam Holiday sale, there are plenty of great games to buy for your loved ones while still saving enough cash to pick up a bunch more for yourself!"And since sharing is almost just as good as giving these days, please don't forget to share with us any other great deals that we may have missed this week down in the replies!
