The Trace is a first-person detective puzzle game developed by Relentless Software. In this game, you’ll take on the role of Sam Pearce as he investigates a murder by collecting evidence, solving inventory puzzles, and piecing together clues. Gamezebo’s The Trace walkthrough will provide you with detailed images, tips, information, and hints on how to crack this case.

Interacting with the World

Trace_00A
  • The Trace is a fairly minimalist first-person game, relying entirely on direct touch input to move about the world. To move to any location, you need only tap on an area or object. To look around you, drag the screen in the opposite direction of where you’d like to look.
  • You have 360 degree control of your movement. In order to turn and face behind you, simply drag the screen left or right until you are facing the right direction.
Trace_00B
  • There are very few menus and icons in this game. To exit close-up views and other separate menus, put two fingers on the screen and pinch inward (drawing the fingers toward each other).
  • The exception to the above rule is the Leads menu. This menu has an X button in the upper right corner to allow you to exit.

Types of Scenes / Menus

  • The main area you’ll be interacting with is simply the crime scene / world, but you’ll also enter different types of screens and menus while exploring.
  • Tapping on an object will sometimes cause you to zoom in on that object, particularly if it’s important to your investigation. From here you can either interact with it (as in the case of a door handle) or sometimes zoom in a second time for a special “Evidence” view.
Trace_00C
  • In “Evidence View,” objects will be isolated and you’ll be able to manipulate them directly. In this screen, dragging will move the object instead of your character. You can turn objects over entirely and view them from any angle.
Trace_004
  • Pushing the flashlight icon on the right hand side will activate “Forensic Mode,” which allows you to see hidden details like fingerprints.
  • While in Evidence View, there will be a number listed at the top left of the screen. This indicates how many pieces of evidence are available on the current object. Often this might include basic details learned by viewing the object, as well as a fingerprint or other item. You’ll want to uncover all pieces of evidence for each item. As you discover pieces of evidence they will be checked off and the number will reflect how many are left.
  • Special evidence objects, like fingerprints, will need to be scanned to be collected. To scan an area, just hold your finger down on it in Evidence View. The “scanning” notification will pop up and once it reaches 100%, the area will be scanned.
  • To exit Evidence View, pinch two fingers together on the screen.
Trace_00D
  • The Inventory screen is available while in the crime scene / environment view. To access your Inventory, tap on the “>” arrow on the upper left side of the screen. The Inventory window will pop out, allowing you to see your current items and drag any of them into the world. You’ll often need to use items on other objects or areas of the world, such as dragging a screwdriver onto a screw.
Trace_00E
  • The other important menu is the “Leads” menu. This is where all of your important leads are tracked and what allows you to piece together info to solve the case. As you explore the world, two types of leads will be uncovered: Lead Questions and Lead Clues.
  • Lead Questions are unanswered queries about the current case / location. For instance, if you found a shattered window, you might unlock the Lead Question “What broke this window?”
  • Lead Clues are used to answer Lead Questions. They are often earned by examining evidence and finding objects. If you found a baseball on the ground near the window with glass under it, you might receive the baseball as a Lead Clue that would answer the former Lead Question.
  • Note that not all evidence becomes a Lead Question or Lead Clue. If you receive a new Lead, you will be notified.
Trace_021
  • To access the Lead Menu, you can tap on the icon when you are notified of a new Lead. You can also tap on any of the Lead Questions that appear around the environment as you explore: after discovery and notification, Lead Questions will show up as floating icons in the world near their related object. Solved Lead Questions will appear as green check marks while open Lead Questions will be red question marks.
  • Within the Lead Menu you can review your current Lead Questions and Clues as well as solve Lead Questions. To solve a Lead Question, select the Question via the tree on the right hand side. It will appear on the left with spaces below for its related Clues. Select the correct Clues from the bottom row of icons and drag them to the Lead Question box. (Some Lead Questions have more than one related Clue and the box will reflect this with space for each one.)
  • After you’ve filled the Clue slots they will be analyzed and you’ll be informed if they are correct or not. If correct, the Lead Question will be marked as solved and changed to a green checkmark, as will its related Clues. Each Clue is only connected with one Question, so you won’t need to use them more than once.
  • The goal of each chapter (and the game) is to discover all of the Lead Questions and Clues and use the latter to solve the former.

General Tips

  • Don’t be afraid to wander and tap on anything. There are a lot of items that aren’t evidence-related, but you’ll often still receive commentary or generally interesting information by viewing them. You can’t die or fail in The Trace, so don’t be afraid to play around.
  • Like most point-and-click-style games, you’ll often have to backtrack once you find new items. If you feel stuck, try returning to an area you haven’t been to in awhile and see if something you’ve collected recently can open a new path.
  • The tap controls are sometimes a little finicky. If you tap on an object or area that looks interactive but you move somewhere else (or don’t move at all), try tapping in a slightly different location. We had trouble, for instance, getting to the tiny scrap of paper on the office floor in Chapter 1. Tapping it would result in a comment on the nearby chair. We had to tap just above and to the right to actually view the paper.
Trace_00F
  • Most of the objects in The Trace are designed with real world logic and are intended to be interacted with like you’re really using them. Think about how you’d use an object in real life: for example, when removing screws, remember the familiar saying “righty tighty, lefty loosey.” Just like in real life, you’ll want to turn a screwdriver left (counterclockwise) to loosen screws. Doors have to be opened by turning handles, lights have to be switched on, etc.
  • There’s a helpful hint system for the Leads built into the game that isn’t immediately obvious. When you select your Lead Clues to answer a Lead Question, it will “analyze” for a few seconds. If you’re right, the Question turns green and is marked as “solved.” However, if you’re wrong, the analysis bar will tell you how many clues you got right. This is a nice way to narrow down answers to multi-Clue Questions that you might be stuck on.
  • Our main walkthrough below will cover answers to Lead Questions once all related Clues are discovered and the Question can be answered. If you’d just like a quick rundown of the Lead Questions and their related Clues, check out the Quick Reference Guide at the end.
