Starting the Game

Your story begins in Tarbes, France, in 1625.

You are the young d’Artagnan, about to set off to seek his fortune in Paris.

 The Game

To help you on your way, a trail of footprints leads to your next task, marked with a yellow arrow:

 The Game

Go speak to your father in his study. He will impart some excellent advice, which will serve you well in your travels:

 The Game

Follow the next footprint trail to say goodbye to your mother, who has a gift for you. Then click on the doorway to leave the house.

The townspeople have gathered to see you off! Click on your horse to mount it:

 The Game
 The Game

You can dismount again, by clicking on the dismount icon at the bottom of the screen.

If you’d like to explore your home town of Tarbes before you set out, make sure to do so now, as you’ll be temporarily barred from returning, once you venture forth on your journey:

 The Game

When you’re ready to depart, follow the footprint trail out of your village…

 The Game

…and The Adventure Begins…

 The Game

You’ve completed your first Achievement!

View your progress through the game by clicking on Achievements in the Main Menu.

As you travel north, the in-game tutorial will introduce you to the basics of fighting, looting, and managing your inventory. You’ll also have the opportunity to assist a monk in need, who will gratefully provide you with a helpful gift:

 The Game
 The Game

You now have a new map icon in the lower left corner of your screen. Click on it to access your map of France.

Map

 The Game

Mouse over the in-game map to display city and building names. Use the zoom buttons while in larger towns and cities to view a more detailed map, or to return to the overview map. Typing “M” on the keyboard will also show and hide the map.

See the Maps section of this guide for detailed maps of individual cities.

Console

 The Game

Health Bar – If this bar is critically low, your screen will flash red and beep to alert you.

 The Game

If your health runs out, you perish. Staying alive is relatively easy, as long as you maintain a supply of ointments – and remember to use them. If you should happen to meet your doom, however, all is not lost:

 The Game
 The Game

Use Ointment (O) – If you have a jar of ointment in your inventory, you can click on this to use it to fully restore your health. Each click uses up one ointment, unless your health bar is already full. The white number to the lower right indicates your current supply. Acquire more ointments by looting, or by purchasing them from any merchant.

_

Pause/Resume (P, Spacebar, or Esc) – The keyboard shortcuts will either pause or resume your game. From the Pause screen, you can also access the Options dialog and the Main Menu.

  • Main Menu: Click on Change Player to create a new player or swap players, or view your Achievements.
  • Achievements Screen: There are twenty-five achievements in the Main Story, shown below on the left, and eighteen Side Quests, on the right. Side quests may be completed in any order. The dimmed silhouettes will fill in as you complete missions and side quests.

 The Game_

See the Main Story Walkthrough and Side Quests Walkthrough sections of this guide for detailed information about each mission.

 The Game_

Open Inventory (I) – From within the Inventory, you can Equip, Unequip, or Drop items. You can also view descriptions of each item, and experiment with the effects of equipping items on your levels.

 The Game_

 The Game

Map (M) – If you’re in a city, you can Zoom In to the city view, or Zoom Out from the city map to view the overview map of France. Mouse over maps to see pop-up labels for cities and buildings.

 The Game
 The Game
 The Game

Dismount Horse – You’ll automatically dismount your horse to fight, loot crates and barrels, or enter a building. Use this button to dismount at other times.

 The Game

Activate Sword (Z) – Use the keyboard shortcuts to activate your sword or gun more easily in the heat of battle, and to quickly switch between the two.

 The Game

 The Game

Activate Gun (X) – This icon turns red when you fire, and then meters the amount of time until reloading is complete. You’ll hear a click when your gun is ready to fire again.

 The Game

Mission Timer – During timed missions, your time remaining is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.

 The Game

Footprint Guide – An optional hint feature, which leads you to your next destination in the course of completing your current task. Enable/disable the Footprint Guide under Options.

General tips

To switch between active missions, open the map and select the yellow arrow associated with that mission. The Footprint Guide will shift to that mission.

 The Game
  • The yellow marker for your active mission will bounce. This is helpful when your map shows multiple missions in progress.
  • If you don’t see a marker for your active mission, and you’re in a city, try zooming out to the overview map – your mission objective may await you in another town.

Choices in dialog seldom affect your game play. There are some exceptions – for instance, when you’re offered the opportunity to win back your horse, in the Main Story mission, The Return.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Tips for Fighting

  • Heed your father’s advice to fight often.
  • Stock up on ointments before starting a duel or battle.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts to quickly use ointment (O) and switch between weapons (Z, X) in battle.
  • Conserve ointments by waiting to use them until you hear the low-health alert.
  • Remember to use your gun early in battle, as it will need time to reload. Pistols reload faster, but muskets give you a higher Shooting bonus.
  • Watch for opponents sweating in fear, indicating they’ve lost focus and are vulnerable, then click on them quickly.

     The Game

  • When entering into battle along with allies, immediately click on an opponent, to attack, or d’Artagnan will just stand there.
  • You can choose to switch to a different adversary in battle by clicking on him.
  • Shift your cursor slightly away from your opponents, so the pop-up labels won’t block your view.
  • If your opponents are hidden behind a tree or building, move out into the open and they’ll follow you.
  • Don’t forget to pick up any choice loot left by your opponents.
  • If you encounter a random altercation, decide whether you want to fight, before moving on. Once you travel far enough away from the incident, it will disappear.
  • Likewise, don’t leave the scene or enter a building after a random incident, until you’ve received your reward from the person you helped, as they’ll be gone when you return.
  • When in battle, even if you’re merely shooting at an opponent from a distance, keep in mind that you will automatically dismount your horse, and your horse may wander off and hide. After the battle you can either try to track it down, or simply proceed on foot, and wait for it to catch up.

     The Game

Traveling by Horse

  • Traveling on horseback will speed your walking time in the game considerably. If you don’t have a horse, and can afford the purchase, try to acquire one as soon as possible. Higher quality horses are faster.
  • You will automatically dismount your horse for certain activities – fighting, gathering loot, and entering buildings. Remember to remount your horse afterward, before journeying on.
  • If you lose track of your horse, it will eventually show up again, often the next time you emerge from a building, unless there are obstacles in its way. Just continue about your business on foot until it finds you.
  • After boat travel, your horse will also eventually reappear, though it may take a moment for it to reach you from wherever it disembarked.

Tennis Pointers

  • Tennis in the Three Musketeers is an arcade mini-game, similar to Pong. Hit the ball past your opponent to win a game. Be the first player to win three games, to win a match.
  • The number of games you’ve each won is displayed to the right of the court.
  • You can aim the ball somewhat, by allowing it to hit your player on one side or the other, to send the ball in that direction, or in his center to aim the ball straight ahead.
  • Try to keep the ball going straight back and forth between you and your opponent as long as possible, while the exchange gradually speeds up. Standing forward on the court can help hasten this process, and also make it easier to shoot the ball off to the corner, where it’s difficult for your opponent to return it, once it’s picked up enough speed.
  • Dingo Games has posted a video example of a successful game, playing against the final, most difficult opponent:

  • After you score, your opponent will serve the ball from where he was standing at the end of that round. This includes either far end of the court, so make sure to keep an eye on his location whilst celebrating your victory, so he doesn’t sneak one by you and win the match.
  • Dragging d’Artagnan around with the mouse, rather than clicking on the court to direct him, can give you better control.
  • Complete the Pro Skills tennis side-quest early in the game, if possible. You’ll be rewarded with Tennis Boots, which allow you to walk 25% faster.

Funding Your Adventures

  • Fight often, then pick up what your opponents leave behind.
  • Loot value increases along with your level.
  • Check barrels, crates and chests for loot. You can do this anywhere without repercussions, including in houses and palaces, though some people will reprove you for intruding, or reproach you for thinking about stealing.

     The Game

  • Sell loot to a merchant. Use the “S” keyboard shortcut while in the “Sell Goods” screen to quickly sell items. Merchants are marked in red in the Maps section. There are several types of merchants:

     The Game

  • Merchants will give you a better deal, the higher your level of Honour.
  • Intervene on behalf of those attacked by thieves, etc. — often they will reward you in francs.
  • Do quests for rewards. Be aware, however, that some people will reward you very well for completing a quest for them, and others will be miserly. In the life of an aspiring Musketeer, doing the “right thing” does not necessarily always pay.

     The Game The Game

Items and Inventory Management

  • Items can be found in crates, barrels, and chests; purchased; or received as rewards for defending someone, or for completing a quest.
  • Most containers will eventually reset with new items, as long as they’re not on screen.

    Reset times:
    – Crates and barrels: ten minutes to half an hour
    – Chests: an hour or two

  • Items can be equipped, unequipped or dropped from within your inventory. Equipped items are marked with a small “E”.
  • Drag items you plan to keep into the bottom slots of your inventory. This prevents their becoming jumbled together with newly acquired items, which are automatically placed at the top.

     The Game

  • Inventory slots are limited – clear inventory space by dropping items, or selling them to merchants.
  • If you’re visiting a merchant to clear inventory space for loot you’ve left lying on the ground, make haste – loot items can disappear in as few as three minutes.
  • New mission-related items will automatically replace existing items. If your inventory holds low-value items you don’t want to lose, plan to maintain a few empty inventory spaces while working on missions, to prevent d’Artagnan from ditching these “less desirable” items on the ground. Mission items and ointments will not be automatically discarded.

Levels and Advancement

  • Attack and Defence level increases will allow you to defeat your fencing opponents more easily.
  • At higher levels of Honour, people will treat you with more respect, merchants will offer you better deals, and additional side missions will become available.
  • Increases in Shooting cause you inflict more damage when using a gun.

     The Game

  • Defeat opponents to earn experience and advance levels. This increases your base stats, shown in darker blue in your inventory.

     The Game

  • When you level up in the middle of a duel or battle, a blue status bar will briefly appear in the lower left of the screen, and you’ll hear a tone.

     The Game

  • When your fight is finished, a level-up screen will display, showing your new stats. Your ability levels update when this screen appears.
  • Your Shooting level will appear later in the game, once you’ve acquired a gun.
  • Supplement your ability levels beyond your base stats, by equipping yourself with spiffier clothing and weaponry. You may purchase these from merchants, find them as loot, or receive them as a mission reward.
  • Click on an item in your inventory to preview its potential effects on your abilities – green bars show how the new item would improve your stats, red bars indicate a detrimental effect. See the Items section of this guide for individual item specs.

     The Game

  • If your Musketeer companions are dropping like flies, in battle, take a detour from the Main Story missions to fight duels and work on Side Quests, in order to beef up your own levels. The Musketeers’ levels are linked to yours, and will also improve. Having high-level Musketeers at your side is especially helpful in the later battles.

Cast of Characters

 The Game

You will play as d’Artagnan, a young man from the French province of Gascony. His goal in life is to become a Musketeer.

The Three Musketeers

Athos: The oldest and noblest of the three musketeers, his background remains a mystery. He clearly comes from a noble family but no one knows what his true name is.

Aramis: Aramis is but temporarily a Musketeer. His true calling is that of the priesthood. D’Artagnan suspects that his mistress is Madame de Chevreuse, a close friend to the queen.

Porthos: The tallest and strongest of the Musketeers, Porthos is not as clever as his friends. He enjoys dressing in extravagant clothing, even when he cannot afford them. A rich mistress is a necessity for Porthos.

Other Main Characters

The Man from Meung: This man insulted d’Artagnan in the town of Meung. D’Artagnan does not know his real name, but nevertheless considers “The Man from Meung” to be his nemesis.

Milady: She is as evil as she is beautiful. She has ties with “The Man from Meung” and Cardinal Richelieu.

Cardinal Richelieu: The most powerful man in France, he has eyes and ears everywhere. After being rejected by the queen, he launches a plot against her.

King Louis XIII: “Louis the Just” is not a particularly capable ruler. He depends heavily on his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu.

Queen Anne: Also known as Anne of Austria, the queen is involved romantically with the Duke of Buckingham. She becomes the target of a political plot and it is d’Artagnan’s duty to defend her honour.

Constance Bonacieux: D’Artagnan’s love interest and seamstress to the queen, Constance Bonacieux is often caught in the middle of political intrigues.

The Duke of Buckingham: George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, is the English Minister of War, and the most powerful man in England (save perhaps for the king). He worships Queen Anne, and is willing to use all his power and wealth to pursue her affections.

Main Story Walkthrough

 The GameThe Adventure Begins

You begin your journey.

  • Bid farewell to your father and mother, mount your trusty steed and leave Tarbes to seek your fortune as a Musketeer. (See Starting the Game, above.)

 The GameRoad to Paris

In which you learn a few things, encounter the Man from Meung and Milady de Winter, and finally set foot in Paris..

  • Journey northward. The in-game tutorial will guide you through the next stretch of road. You’ll encounter a highwayman blocking your path, and learn to fight and heal yourself.
  • Remount your horse once you’ve dispatched the highwayman, and continue north. You’ll next discover how to loot barrels and chests. An Inventory icon will appear in the lower left of your screen, so you can use it to equip your new items.
  • Continue north until you reach a monk being harassed by thieves. Click through the conversation, and choose to help the monk. You will then fight the two highwaymen. The tutorial will show how to tell when your opponent is most vulnerable, so you can finish him off.
  • Once you’ve defeated your opponents, gather the loot they left behind, and speak to the monk. He’ll give you a map of France, and a Map icon will then appear, next to the Inventory icon.
  • Click on the Map icon or type “M” to display the map. Mouse over the bouncing yellow triangle. A pop-up will describe your next goal: “Get to Paris.” The blue arrow represents your current location. Mouse over the rest of the map to see city names. Then click “OK”, or type “M” again, to hide the map.
  • Remount your horse, and continue north. You can either follow the road, or follow the footprints across the grass. You’ll wind up in the same place, either way. Loot crates and barrels as you go – you can later sell items you find here.
  • When you arrive in Meung, follow the footprints. As you pass by the Franc Meunier Inn, you’ll encounter the Man from Meung, who insults your horse. Naturally, this calls for a duel. You’re promptly knocked out, however, and after a cutscene, you awaken in a room in the inn, almost dead.
  • Go outside the inn for another cutscene, where you first lay eyes on the beautiful Milady de Winter, speaking to the Man from Meung. You collapse again before you can pursue him. When you awaken in your room, your letter of introduction is missing. Discuss this with the innkeeper, then leave and ride north.
  • Enter the gates of Paris to complete this Achievement.

 The GameNew Friends

You heed your father’s advice to fight duels, and meet some new companions.

  • Upon entering Paris, your first task is to sell your horse. Follow the footprints to the Horse Dealer, and speak to him. Negotiate for a higher price.
  • If you don’t have enough money for a “poor” horse, go north to Aramis’ House, go inside, and loot any chests, crates and barrels. Equip any items superior to what you’re wearing (green bars will display when you click on these). Then proceed further north to the Blacksmith’s or Tailor’s Shop, and sell (S) any excess loot.
  • Return to the Horse Dealer, and purchase a “poor” horse with your profits. While not required to complete this Achievement, having a horse will speed your movement through the game.
  • Speak to Monsieur Bonacieux at the Bonacieux House to rent a room.
  • The Man from Meung’s lackeys broke the sword your father gave you. Repair your sword at the Blacksmith’s Shop or a Weapons Dealer.
  • Ride your horse west, toward the Hôtel de Tréville. Loot along the way, and fight when challenged.
  • Try out any clothing or weapons, then sell any extras at the next merchant you pass. Check out their wares – you may find something useful. Maintain a supply of four or five ointments.
  • Enter the Hôtel de Tréville, and proceed upstairs to speak with Monsieur de Tréville. Here you’ll encounter Porthos and Aramis, followed by Athos. As Monsieur de Tréville discusses your future prospects, you’ll notice the Man from Meung outside.
  • As you attempt to chase him down, you’ll run into Athos and Porthos, who will each challenge you to a duel. East of Pré-aux-Clercs you lose sight of the Man from Meung, but then encounter Aramis, who also arranges for a duel.
  • Proceed west of Pré-aux-Clercs, to meet Athos, as arranged. He has invited your other two duel appointments as his seconds. The Cardinal’s Guards interrupt as you begin to duel.
  • Click on an adversary to join in battle. Watch for your opponent to sweat, then click on him. When your screen flashes red indicating low health, type “O” to use one ointment. After you finish off one opponent, click another to continue to fight.
  • Defeat the Cardinal’s Guards to complete this Achievement.

 The GameKings Gold

In which the King has reason to be pleased with your progress.

  • Following your victory, and a conversation with Monsieur de Tréville, you’ll find yourself in front of the Hôtel de Tréville. Return promptly to the scene of the fight with the Cardinal’s Guards, to the south, to collect any loot.
  • Proceed east to speak with your new companions at the Pomme-de-Pin Tavern. They’ll invite you to play tennis. You may either follow them at that time, or join them later at the Tennis Court for a game. Restock your ointments from the tavern’s proprietor, and sell any extra items.
  • Join your friends at the Tennis Court, and play a round. (See Tennis Pointers, under General Tips.) Afterward, one of the Cardinal’s Guards, Bernajoux, will insult you. Naturally, you challenge him to a duel.
  • Leave the building and fight Bernajoux. (See Tips for Fighting.) Once you defeat him, his friends will accost you. This will rapidly devolve into a large battle between a number of Musketeers and the Cardinal’s Guards. Click on the Guards to fight them.
  • After the battle, you’ll converse with your friends. Feel free to choose either option offered as a reply. Dialog choices don’t normally affect the game play adversely.
  • Collect any loot, and then locate your horse, who is likely hiding in the garden to the south.
  • You may wish to try the Pro Skills side mission now (see below), before you proceed further, as you’ll be rewarded with boots to increase your walking speed.
  • Follow the Musketeers to the Hôtel de Tréville. Speak with Monsieur de Tréville, and then go to the Louvre to speak with the King about the disturbance at the Tennis Court – your friends will join you. The King will bestow 400 francs upon you, and recommend you become a Guardsman.
  • Share your reward with the Musketeers, and watch a cutscene with the Cardinal, to complete this Achievement.

 The GameGuardsman

You acquire your Guardsman’s tabard, and purchase a gun for your first patrol.

  • Return to the Pomme-de-Pin Tavern to dine with your friends. They will suggest ways to spend your reward. Regardless of which option you choose, you’ll acquire your new servant, Planchet.
  • After your meal, go speak with Monsieur d’Essart at the Hôtel D’Essart. He’ll advise you to purchase a gun for your first patrol as a cadet, and give you a new Guardsman’s Tabard to complete this Achievement.
  • Before you begin your next Achievement, go to the Blacksmith’s Shop and purchase a pistol or a musket. Pistols have a faster reloading time, but muskets give you a higher bonus to your Shooting level. Choose the best you can afford of either.
  • Report back to Monsieur d’Essart, who will assign you to patrol at Pont Neuf, the bridge just east of the Louvre. Remember your father’s advice, and fight as often as you can, along the way, as you must defeat opponents in order to advance levels.
  • When you reach your post, you’ll see a woman being kidnapped. Help the woman, and follow the in-game tutorial to learn how to use your gun. Then speak to the woman, and pick up your reward.

 The GameNew Love

In which you protect the lovely Constance from the Cardinal’s Guards.

  • Go speak to Planchet at the Bonacieux House. Monsieur Bonacieux will enlist your aid in rescuing his wife, Constance. She has been taken by the Man from Meung, whom you then see out the window.
  • Follow the in-game Footprint Guide and narrative story line, as Monsieur Bonacieux is taken away by the Cardinal’s Guards and Constance returns, in need of your assistance.
  • Escort Constance to Athos’ house. Then speak with her to complete this Achievement.

 The GameGeorge Villiers

Complete the favor Constance has asked, and escort her on an errand of intrigue.

  • Go to the east door of the Louvre, and give Germain the passwords, “Tours” and “Brussels.” Monsieur Laporte will advise you to arrange for an alibi to stay out of trouble.
  • Proceed to the Hôtel de Tréville and look for Monsieur de Tréville. You’ll be asked to wait for him in his study. Enter and immediately reset the clock over the fireplace. Otherwise, you’ll be informed it’s too late for visitors, and placed outside the building to try again.
  • Monsieur de Tréville will inform you of Athos’ whereabouts, and leave. Set the clock back to the original time and look for Athos at Aramis’ House. You’ll discover Constance there. Speak with her.
  • Escort Constance and fight off the Cardinal’s Guards who will try to interfere. While it’s technically possible to just run around them, it’s to your benefit to heed your father’s advice and fight whenever possible.
  • When Constance stops, speak to her to complete this Achievement.

 The GameThe Bastille

The plot thickens…

  • Return to the Bonacieux House and speak with Planchet, to find that Athos has allowed himself to be taken to the Bastille in your place. Look for Monsieur de Tréville at the Hôtel de Tréville.
  • Go toward the Louvre. At the bridge, you’ll encounter Constance and an unfamiliar Musketeer. After jealously attacking the stranger and discovering his true identity, escort the pair to the Louvre, and fight off anyone who interferes.
  • Following a cutscene with the Duke of Buckingham and Queen Anne, you’ll return to the Pomme-de-Pin Tavern, and discuss how to rescue Athos. Purchase ointments, if needed, from the Proprietor, and sell extra items. Items will sell for more as your Honour level increases.
  • Speak to Monsieur de Tréville at the Hôtel de Tréville; then proceed to the Bastille to rejoin your friends. Watch the resulting cutscene, and speak with the Musketeers again to complete this Achievement.

 The GameThe Journey

You receive a dangerous mission, and set out with your three companions.

  • Report to Pont Neuf for guard duty. The Cardinal’s Guards pick a fight with you. Finish them off, and return to your room at the Bonacieux House.
  • After a cutscene with the King, Queen Anne and Constance, and further floorboard eavesdropping, go downstairs and speak to Constance. You receive the task spurned by Constance’s traitorous husband: to carry a letter from the Queen to the Duke of Buckingham, in England.
  • Ask Monsieur de Tréville for leave at the Hôtel de Tréville, then go to the houses of your three companions, and speak to each. If your Footprint Guide disappears after you visit a house, return to the Map and click on a yellow triangle to activate that path.
  • Before your journey, visit any merchant to clear space in your Inventory, and to restock your ointments, if necessary. Purchase extra (10 or more) for your journey, as you won’t necessarily be able to stop for more when you need them.
  • Meet your friends at the East Gate, and speak to Athos. You split the money from Constance between you. Your portion is added to your total francs.
  • Decide whether you’re ready to leave London – once you set out, you won’t be able to return until you’ve completed your journey. Make any desired equipment purchases before agreeing to depart.
  • Travel to Chantilly, and stop to dine at the St. Martin Inn. Porthos is waylaid by a duel with a Cardinalist. Leave him in the inn, completing this Achievement.

 The GameComte de Wardes

In which your companions fall by the wayside, and you acquire a pass.

  • Proceed north with Aramis and Athos. An ambush injures Aramis. Leave him to recover in Crévecoeur, but use an ointment to heal yourself. Continue to Amiens with Athos.
  • Spend the night at the Lis d’Or Inn. Speak to the Innkeeper, and insist on staying together in the common room. In the morning, Athos is detained by thugs, leaving you to continue with only Planchet.
  • Pass up opportunities to fight, at this point, as you need to get to Calais quickly.
  • When you reach Calais, visit the Calais Inn and speak to the Innkeeper, if necessary, to restock your Inventory before proceeding. Then go west to the Docks.
  • Follow the Comte de Wardes when he leaves the Docks, and speak to him as soon as he enters the woods, before he gets much farther. Fight him (use your gun, then your sword), and take the Unsigned Crossing Order he drops.
  • Continue south to the Governor’s House. Speak to the Governor, who will sign your Crossing Order to complete this Achievement.

 The GameLondon at Last

You go to London.

  • Return to the Docks, speak to the Captain, and board the Boat to Dover.
  • Once in Dover, remount your horse, and ride northwest to London, Continue to avoid combat, and use ointments to heal, if attacked.
  • Enter Buckingham’s House in London, and speak to Patrick, to complete this Achievement.

 The GameThe Queen’s Studs

In which you hasten back to Paris, to complete your mission for the Queen.

  • Follow Patrick to the woods west of Windsor, to meet with the Duke of Buckingham. Return with the Duke to his house.
  • The Duke will take you to the Diamond Studs, and discover two are missing. After he arranges for replacements, wait about half a minute while the jeweler works, and then speak with the Duke again, The jeweler will return with the new studs.
  • After a cutscene, you’ll be in St. Valery. Once you click the mouse, this part of the mission will be timed. Your time remaining is shown in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Travel south as quickly as possible, trading your horses at the inns along the way. Say “Forward” to each innkeeper to get a fresh horse. You will get to keep the last horse you ride – a vast improvement over your previous horse.
  • In this mission only, your horses will gradually slow and tire as you ride them, so make haste! You must reach Germain, by the east door of the Louvre, before the timer runs out.
  • Speak to Germain, then give Constance the Queen’s Diamond Studs to complete this Achievement.

The GameThe Ballet of La Merlaison

You attend the Royal Ball as a Guard, and witness the Queen’s triumph.

  • Report to Monsieur de Tréville at the Hôtel de Tréville, then proceed to the Hôtel de Ville for Guard duty for the Royal Ball. Speak with Monsieur d’Essart, then watch the ball.
  • If you like, you can wander about and speak with the attendees as they dance, until the King presents the Queen with the Cardinal’s two studs.
  • Once the Cardinal finishes backpedaling, and the Queen makes her exit, speak to Constance. Follow her out of the ballroom, and receive a gift in thanks from the Queen to complete this Achievement.

 The GameThe Return

In which you seek the lovely Constance, and reunite with the Musketeers.

  • Speak to Planchet at the Bonacieux House to see if Constance has left a message. Go downstairs and speak with Monsieur Bonacieux.
  • Visit a merchant on the way out of town, then travel to the top right house in St. Cloud to meet Constance (see St. Germain/St. Cloud map). Alas, she isn’t there, and there are signs of a struggle.
  • Speak to the people around St. Cloud to see if they noticed anything suspicious. Report back to Monsieur de Tréville, in Paris, who suggests you leave the city for a bit.
  • Follow the Footprint Guide to look for your friends at their houses in Paris, picking up the Love Letter at Aramis’ House, and arrange for Planchet to join you in retracing your steps northward.
  • You’ll seek out Porthos in Chantilly, then find Aramis, at the Crévecoeur Inn, and give him the Love Letter. Finally, speak with Athos, after luring him out of the cellar at the Lis d’Or Inn in Amiens.
  • Gamble with the Lord de Winter to win back your horse (it doesn’t matter which item you choose to gamble). Make sure to keep your excellent horse, when offered money instead, completing this Achievement.

 The GameMilady de Winter

You receive some good news, and intercept a letter.

  • Follow the Footprint Guide to gather all the Musketeers, then speak with Monsieur d’Essart at the Hôtel D’Essart. You’ll report for Guard duty, then rejoin the Musketeers at the Pomme-de-Pin Tavern, and follow Porthos to the St. Leu Church.
  • Visit a merchant to clear your inventory and stock up on ointments (try to keep a supply of 10 or more), before following Milady and Kitty to Germain. Planchet will intercept Milady’s letter to the Comte de Wardes, to complete this Achievement.

 The GameEnglish and French

In which you quarrel with the English, with the aid of your friends.

  • Follow Milady until she meets the Lord de Winter. You’ll arrange a duel with him by Luxembourg Palace.
  • If you haven’t been dueling on the side, pick random fights around Paris, now, to beef up your levels. Note that the Musketeers’ levels increase with yours. If they’re wimpy, they’ll fall quickly, leaving you to fight on your own, and then stumble off to recuperate after the battle is over.
  • Go to Athos’ House and speak to him. He’ll send his servant to gather the Musketeers. Meet Lord de Winter in the Luxembourg Gardens. Defeat him and his men, sparing his life and winning an introduction to his sister, to complete this Achievement.

 The GameKitty

You find intrigue, and don a disguise to further your ends.

  • Restock your ointments, then go to Milady’s House, where Lord de Winter has agreed to introduce you. Speak with Milady de Winter and Kitty. Go check on Porthos and Aramis at their respective houses, then return to Milady’s House.
  • Follow Kitty upstairs and speak with her. Intrigue will follow, plus a musical interlude. After you’ve forged a letter from the Comte de Wardes, go to the Tailor’s Shop and purchase a disguise. Equip it in your inventory. Don’t forget to remove your Guardsman’s Tabard.
  • Return to Milady’s House and converse with Milady. After another musical interlude, Kitty relieves you of your disguise, and you’ll acquire Milady’s Sapphire Ring to complete this Achievement.

 The GameCross Dresser

In which you discover Milady’s secret, and escape in style – Kitty’s style.

  • Speak to Athos at his House. He’ll caution you regarding Milady.
  • Look for Planchet in your room at the Bonacieux House. Speak with Kitty, who awaits you there. You’ll send her away with a forged letter for Milady, and receive an invitation the next morning.
  • Return to Milady’s House. Following more intrigue, a musical interlude, and a cutscene, you’ll find yourself in front of the house, wearing Kitty’s pink dress.
  • Your inventory and map are inaccessible during this portion of the mission, so you’re temporarily stuck with the dress. Speak to people you pass on the street, to hear comments on your attire. Proceed to Athos’ House.
  • Kitty returns your clothing, and you attempt to give Athos a ring, to complete this Achievement.

 The GameCardinal’s Offer

You see Constance, and have a chat with the Cardinal.

  • Go to Les Halles Market and sell Athos’ ring to the Jeweller there, then return to Athos’ House to divide the proceeds. Planchet brings two letters, one from Constance, and one from the Cardinal.
  • Go south of Paris to catch a glimpse of Constance, then return to your appointment with Cardinal Richelieu in the back room at the Palais-Cardinal. Speak to the Cardinal to complete this Achievement.

The GameThe Siege of La Rochelle

In which you travel to La Rochelle, and receive a hostile welcome.

  • Report to Monsieur d’Essart at the Hôtel D’Essart to find out about the siege at La Rochelle. Stock up on ointments, and purchase the best sword and gun you can afford, from the Clothing and Weapons Store at the north edge of Paris. If necessary, loot and fight to acquire more funds for this, or…
  • Assuming your Honour is high enough, you may want to take a side trip to first complete the Flintlock side mission, and then start the Marin’s Friend side mission (see the alternate scenario, in the guide for that mission, below), in order to get some temporary funding for weaponry.
  • Go south to Meung, and continue to La Rochelle, to the west. Fight off Milady’s assassins to complete this Achievement.

 The GameBreakfast on the Bastion

You battle the Rochellais, and slip away for a bit of breakfast and tactics.

  • Speak to Monsieur d’Essart at the Camp at La Rochelle, He will send you to the southern bastion to join in the battle. Purchase several extra ointments from the Merchant standing in the center of the camp, then go southwest to join the Guards in battle. Use your gun (X) to defeat attackers shooting at you from atop the wall.
  • Monsieur d’Essart will send you next to the eastern bastion as a scout. Your fellow Guardsmen will turn on you. One will run toward the bastion and be shot. Defeat the other, and you’ll receive Milady’s Assassination Letter from him.
  • Locate your horse, who may be hiding in a neighboring field, and report back to Monsieur d’Essart, who will now send you to the northern bastion. Restock your ointments again.
  • Go west to the northern bastion, and again join your fellow Guardsmen in battle. If necessary, you can retreat for a bit, back to the east, before attacking the shooters on the wall, to wait for your gun to reload, or to heal yourself or level up.
  • Return to camp to replenish your ointments. Then go to Your Tent to speak with Planchet. Once the King’s entourage passes, go speak with the Musketeers in the south part of the Camp. Return to Your Tent to discover another assassination attempt.
  • Watch the cutscenes with the Musketeers, the Cardinal, and Milady de Winter. Athos will then arrange for some privacy to speak, in the midst of battle. Follow the Musketeers to the top of the bastion for breakfast and strategizing.
  • Fight off your attackers. Grimaud will reload your gun automatically, so just click on advancing soldiers to shoot them. You’ll still need to type “O” to replenish your health. The Musketeers continue planning. Fight off more attackers, then leave, to complete this Achievement.

 The GameMusketeer

In which you finally join your three companions as a Musketeer.

  • You return to camp to much celebration, and at last become a Musketeer. Watch the cutscene to complete this Achievement and receive your new Musketeer’s Tabard.
  • Important! You’ll also be provided a two-star Matchlock Musket, which will be automatically equipped. It’s likely inferior to the gun you purchased before traveling to La Rochelle. Check your Inventory, and ensure you’ve equipped your best weapons.

 The GameTrial and Execution

You find Constance, seek Milady, and see justice prevail.

  • Speak to Monsieur d’Essart about selling the Queen’s ring, then confer with the Musketeers, to the east. After distributing letters to carry, you receive the proceeds from the ring sale from Monsieur d’Essart. Watch the cutscene with Milady, then converse with the Cardinal.
  • Speak to Monsieur de Tréville at his Camp to request leave to rescue Constance, then stock up on ointments from the Merchant at the camp. Speak with the Musketeers, then set out to escort the King back to Paris. Fight off any attackers, then watch the cutscene.
  • This is a good time to try a few side missions (see next section) to boost your levels, and to acquire funds to upgrade your equipment before setting out for Béthune. It may seem improper to dawdle while Constance awaits you, but this delay will not affect the outcome of your mission.
  • Buy the best equipment you can from the Clothing and Weapons Store in the north of Paris (and from Marin, if you’ve completed the Flintlock side mission).
  • Once you’re satisfied with your equipment and levels, restock your ointments, and proceed through the East Gate, toward the Béthune Convent. Take the right fork in the road, after the next cutscene.
  • Pick up the Dropped Note left by the Man from Meung in front of the Arras Inn, then continue to Béthune. Enter the Convent, then travel east to find Milady, fighting off any attackers.
  • Go to the Armentières Inn and speak with the Innkeeper. Restock your ointments, then proceed toward Erquinghem. You’ll be ambushed in the woods. If you can’t see your opponents behind the trees, move back out into the open and they’ll follow you.
  • Continue to Erquinghem, and watch the cutscene, after which you’ll find yourself back in Paris, first at the Pomme-de-Pin Tavern, then under arrest at the Palais-Cardinal. After speaking with Cardinal Richelieu, you’ll receive a blank Lieutenant’s Commission for the Musketeers.
  • Offer the blank commission letter to each of your friends to complete this Achievement.

 The GameLieutenancy

  • Watch the cutscene to complete this Achievement.

 The GameCompleted Main Story

  • Complete all the other Main Story missions to complete this Achievement.
  • After the credits, you’ll be returned to the Bonacieux House, where you can continue to complete Side Quests.

Side Quests Walkthrough

 The Game

Tip: After the Cardinal’s Offer mission, in the Main Story, you can combine Explosive Inventor, Special Delivery, and English Weapons, as all require travel to London. Begin in Tarbes, stop by Paris and Dover, then head to London. Retrace your path to complete all three missions.

Awards amounts are based on your level. Some side mission awards are determined by a multiplier times the base reward amount for your level. At Level 10, your base amount is 15, but by Level 25, it’s up to 91, so at higher levels, your reward may be far more generous for the same mission.

 The Game

 The GameCheaters

Mission: Gamble with the Cardinal’s Guards, and win – one way or another…
Starting Location: The Cardinal’s Guards Inn, Paris
How to Begin: Speak with the Cardinal’s Guard at your end of the table on the left.
Requirements: None
Reward: Experience and loot.

  • Gamble with the Cardinal’s Guards. It doesn’t matter if you have enough money, as the Guards will be happy to relieve you of what little you do have. They’ll cheat, you’ll lose, and when you call them on it, they attack.
  • It’s technically possible to complete this mission when you first enter Paris, with enough ointments. You may or may not find a couple in the Inn’s containers. However, you’ll be fighting seven opponents single-handedly, so prior fighting experience is helpful.
  • If you wish to purchase ointments, you’ll have to do so elsewhere, as the Innkeeper will only sell to the Cardinal’s Guards. You can even run out of the Inn in the middle of fighting, if necessary, purchase ointments, and then return to finish off the rest of your opponents.
  • If you haven’t stocked up on ointments, you may still prevail, by shifting to a location where only one Guard can reach you at a time. Defeated opponents may drop enough ointments to keep you alive for the duration of the mission. Click on dropped ointments promptly, to add them to your stock.
  • Defeat all the Cardinal’s Guards to complete this Achievement.

 The GameFlintlock

Mission: Find Marin le Bourgeoys’ missing servant, François, at the Blacksmith’s Shop in St. Germain.
Starting Location: Marin’s quarters in the Louvre, Paris
How to Begin: Speak to Marin le Bourgeoys.
Requirements: Honour 20
Reward:
Ability to purchase Flintlock Pistols and Muskets, as well as Marin’s special guns.

  • Speak to Marin le Bourgeoys in his quarters, upstairs at the Louvre, near the back staircase in the east wing. Agree to find François.
  • Stock up on ointments before leaving Paris, then go to the Blacksmith’s Shop in St. Germain. Fight off the thieves, then speak with the Blacksmith. You can now buy and sell from him. Restock your ointments again (get more than usual), and proceed to the Church.
  • Fight off both rounds of thieves in the Church. Immediately position yourself in the corner by the table, so you only have to fight two attackers at a time. When you’ve polished off the first batch, another round will enter and attack.
  • Once you’ve dispatched all the thieves, speak with François. Restock your ointments at the Blacksmith’s Shop, if necessary, then report back to Marin in Paris, to complete this Achievement.
  • Speak to Marin le Bourgeoys again, if you’d like to peruse his collection of guns. After this mission is complete, Marin will behave like any other merchant.

 The GameCheese Saviour

Mission: Stop the lies being spread about Jean-Mark’s cheese by the Cheese Vendor in Paris.
Starting Location: In front of Jean-Mark’s House, Meung
How to Begin: Speak to Jean-Mark the Cheese Producer.
Requirements:
Honour 10
Reward:
Cheese, which you immediately eat. Experience from fighting Jean-Paul’s thugs.

  • Speak to Jean-Mark the Cheese Producer (a.k.a. Jean-Marc) to hear his tale of woe. Accept his mission.
  • Travel to Les Halles Market in Paris, and speak to Jean-Paul the Cheese Producer, in the northeast corner of the market. Challenge him, and fight off his thugs.
  • Speak to Jean-Paul again, then return to Meung and speak to Jean-Mark to complete this Achievement.

 The GameHelped the Orphans

Mission: Donate to help the orphans… and earn a few extra francs.
Starting Location: In front of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris
How to Begin:
Speak to the Priest.
Requirements:
None
Reward: A few francs. (Base x 2)

 The Game

Congratulations!

You have completed The Three Musketeers: The Game!

Epilogue

You’re free to wander about, once you have finished all the missions. Chat with your old friends; seek out Porthos (and loot his house, naturally, as he’d certainly wish to share with his fellow Musketeer any good fortune he might have encountered); explore the land to see if there’s anything new…

For instance, one might consider taking a stroll behind the convent in Béthune.
