Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is a free-to-play dungeon crawling and dungeon building action-RPG/strategy game. In this game, you construct a castle full of traps and monster to keep out other players while also creating a character to loot player castles yourself. Gamezebo’s quick start guide will provide you with some tips and hints that will help you hoard your loot and keep it too!

Getting Started

• Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is available on Steam. You can play it for free by going to the Steam store and selecting “Play Game.” You will be prompted to download and install the game (use the “Avalable On” option at the top of this page to get there quickly!).

• When you begin, the game will take you through a lengthy tutorial outlining the two modes of play. Follow the onscreen instructions to get acclimated.

• When you’re done with the tutorial, you’ll be free to engage in either “attack” or “defend” by selecting the options at the top of the screen.

How to Play

• Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is played in two ways: offensive and defensive.

• Offensive gameplay is a dungeon crawling action-RPG in the style of Diablo. You enter castles, fight monsters, gather loot and evade traps. If you can complete the dungeon before its timer runs out you get a bonus before exiting.

• You can equip up to four spells and abilities at a time. New abilities are unlocked when you reach new levels.

• If you die in combat, you can spend gold to resurrect yourself as many times as you can afford, unless it’s a predesigned boss level.

• Defensive gameplay is about creating a castle for other players to attack. You can set the minions, traps and structure yourself in order to defend your collected gold (used to purchase most items and upgrades) and life-force (used to build your castle). Before your castle goes into effect, however, you must “validate” it by completing it with your own character.

• When validating your castle, any monster you do not kill will be asleep when enemy players invade. That means they won’t attack unless attacked by the player first.

• Your validation run also determines your castle’s timer. However long it takes you to complete is the time players must beat to access your loot.

Offensive Play: Tips and Strategies

• Area of Effect — Most castle defenses in Mighty Quest focus on mobs of creatures over large, single minions. You can spec your character out with any four abilities from your pool of skills but it’s often best to focus on crowd control and area of effect. Personally, I carry three crowd control skills and one single-target stun ability. That allows your character to focus down mobs of weaker minions while taking bigger, unique monsters (Like the always-popular Count Snottingham) out of play for a few seconds.

• Potions are a Good Investment — Your vault can only hold so much gold and life-force at one time. You can upgrade this as you go, of course, but in the meantime you want to keep your coffers from overfilling and losing out on possible income. Upgrades are the best money sink but if your castle heart isn’t strong enough to support any just yet, be sure to buy lots of potions. You’ll always need more as you go into battle and a single purchase gets you a set of five. The only downside is that they take up inventory slots, so clear out your junk loot to make room for everything you need.

• Use Traps to Your Advantage — Traps don’t care what they hit. If you’re surrounding by flamethrowers and hamster wheels, use them to soften up your opponents while taking a rest. If you pull too many enemies to handle at once, just run away and carry them through opposing traps. You’re faster than most of them and once they’re aggravated they’ll follow you through just about anything — even their own dangerous architecture.

• Look Around Corners — Savvier castle-builders know most players don’t always look where they’re going. The castle timer provides a sense of urgency that supersedes caution. These players trick their opponents into pulling more minions than they can handle at once by placing them off to the sides and around corners. You can see around these areas by rotating the camera, most of the time. Whenever you’re about to enter a new room either do a quick sweep or pull the easily visible enemy back first to see if any of its friends show up.

• Keep Moving — Most traps and minion attacks are easily avoided. However some, like the mortar launchers, rely on constant splash damage. Because a single one of these is of little consequence it’s tempting to stay in one place, soak up the damage and clear out enemy minions. You’ll quickly discover this is a bad idea. One mortar launch might not be a big deal but combined with the full force of an enemy mob your health will drain in seconds.

Defensive Play: Tips and Strategies

• Deadlines — When building your mobs of minions, remember their purpose. They’re there to keep the hero from getting to your vault and stealing your goods. With that in mind, focus on creatures that will slow down your opponent long enough to let your castle’s timer expire. Defend-o-trons and cyclopses with the tackle skill are good such choices. If the hero can’t reach your vault in time, your loot locks up and you keep the gold.

• Choke Points — One great way to place your minions is just in front of thin hallways. The idea is to place one creature directly in the line of sight, at the end of the hallway in a larger room, and other minions to the sides where they might not be seen. Heroes will often engage the single creature without checking for others and aggro the larger group. Ranged classes will try to use these choke points to their advantage by running back through the hallway and forcing the minions to move through at a trickle. Circumvent this by placing impeding traps like gelatinous walls and hamster wheels just before the entrance. With luck, these will knock them right back into the fight.

• Close the Distance — If you really want to slow enemy players down, you need to apply damage directly to keep them moving, using potions and, hopefully, dying. Creatures with high health will waste their time but are usually too slow to get direct hits. That’s where Headshot Zeke comes in. This minion fires sniper shots with a long windup that does immense damage. The advantage to Zekes, and any ranged creatures, is they don’t have to get in close to apply damage. Their shots close the distance immediately while higher health minions soak up the damage.

• Winding Paths — Your options for creating labyrinthine castles are limited in Mighty Quest but they are there. Certain structures you can build have side rooms in which you can place time-wasting traps and minions or hide gold and life-force mines. This keeps heroes running around, looking for the proper path but allows you to make a beeline for the exit when validating your castle, reducing its timer.

• Upgrades — More isn’t always better. After you build a research lab you can upgrade your minions strength and abilities using the same life-force needed to spawn traps and creatures. The advantage to this over creating more minions is that it’s permanent. You might rearrange your defenses half-a-hundred times but the minions themselves can always get stronger. In this way, you’re banking your resources into something that never goes away and forces stronger heroes to expend more time and resources fighting.
