Welcome to Gamezebo’s walkthrough for Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 3 – Lair of the Leviathan.

General Tips

Controls

  • Hold down the left mouse button and then move the mouse in a direction to make Guybrush walk in that direction. In most areas you can also hold down the right mouse button while Guybrush is walking to make him run.
  • Alternatively, the keyboard keys W, A, S and D can be used to make Guybrush walk, and the shift key can be held down at the same time to make him run.
  • Single left click when the cursor is over a hotspot to interact with an object or character.
  • Right click to skip a line of dialogue.
  • Hold down the F4 key to identify all the hotspots in an area.
  • Press the I key to open the inventory.
  • Press the Escape key to return to the menu.

Saving and Loading
To save, press ESC to bring up the menu and then click Save & Load. Use the red arrows to scroll through to a blank saved game and then click the Save Game button. Saved games are given a location, date, time and description of what has happened in the adventure so far. To load, press ESC to bring up the menu and then click Save & Load. Use the red arrows to scroll through to a previously saved game and then click the Load Game button.

Inventory
Press the I key to bring up the inventory. Left click to select an item and it will be tagged onto the cursor. The item will glow green when it is moved over an object in the playing area that it can be used on. Some objects can also be combined by using them on another item in the inventory window. To combine objects, place an object in each of the circles at the left side of the inventory window and then press the plus sign between the circles to try and combine them. Objects can also be examined by selecting the magnifying glass at the top-left corner of the inventory window and then selecting the item.

6000 Doubloons

Found in the treasure chest on the seabed. They are not used.

Chicken Foot Back Scratcher

Available when playing as the voodoo lady. It is not used.

Cochlea

Found after receiving the unanimous vote from the crew. It is used on the wound in the ear of the manatee, which is reached by climbing the main mast on the ship in the mouth of the manatee.

Cocktail Napkin

Available when playing as the voodoo lady. It is not used.

Crown

Found in the treasure chest on the seabed. It is not used.

Elaine’s Ring

Available at the start of the episode.

Empty Mug

After Guybrush loses the face-off competition for the first time, Coronado De Cava gives the empty mug to Guybrush in the mouth of the manatee. After Guybrush has told Noogie to play the drums at a faster tempo, the empty mug is used on the pool of bile in the belly of the manatee to get the mug o’ bile.

Fish Eye Monocular

Made by combining the fish eye of the manatee with the monocular. It is given back to Coronado De Cava so that he doesn’t notice the mug o’ bile.

Fish Eye of the Manatee

Available at the start of the episode. It is combined with the monocular to make the fish eye monocular.

Flopping Fish

Found on the bag on the ship after escaping from the manatee. It is used on the bongos in the manatee to raise the level of the bile.

Golden Wrench

Found in the treasure chest on the seabed. After examining the locket on the ship after escaping from the manatee, the golden wrench is used on the button in the middle of the locket.

Grub

Found near Noogie in the belly of the manatee. It can be given to De Cava as one of the many grubs he needs to create his cochlea, but it does not have to be used.

Guybrush Picture

After Guybrush loses the face-off competition for the first time, the Guybrush picture is found at the right side of Noogie in the belly of the manatee. After examining the locket on the ship after escaping from the manatee, the Guybrush picture is used on the square picture on the locket.

Hook

Available at the start of the episode. It is used to unlock the treasure chest near the ship in the belly of the manatee.

Locket

Available at the start of the episode. It is given to Coronado De Cava in the encampment in the mouth of the manatee.

Manatee Lax

Found after escaping from the manatee for the first time. It is used on the pool of bile in the belly of the manatee to escape from the manatee.

Member’s Manual with Torture Cover

Made by combining the new member’s manual with the torture manual in the inventory. It is not used.

Monocular

Found when De Cava puts his monocular on the table in the mouth of the manatee. It is combined with the fish eye of the manatee to make the fish eye monocular.

Morgan’s Sword

Found in one of the steps that Winslow uses to revive Morgan after she has been knocked out. When Guybrush has proposed a toast and Moose is drinking at the bar in the belly of the manatee, Morgan’s sword is used on the Santino. After escaping from the manatee, the sword is found again by asking Morgan if it can be borrowed. It is used on Murray. After Guybrush and Morgan are put in the cages above the ship, the sword is given to Morgan.

Mug o’ Bile

After Guybrush has told Noogie to play the drums at a faster tempo, the empty mug is used on the pool of bile in the belly of the manatee to get the mug o’ bile. It is used on the painting near the pool of bile to learn the fisheyed expression. It is used on the odd protuberance near the pool of bile to unblock it. It is given to Coronado De Cava after he has been given the fish eye monocular to learn the bugged out eye expression.

Murray

Found in the treasure chest near the ship in the belly of the manatee. After Morgan’s sword has been used on Santino while Moose is drinking, Guybrush can propose another toast to distract Moose again. This time, Murray is used on Santino to replace the skulls.

New Member’s Manual

Found by talking to Noogie about getting him a date with Morgan. It is combined with the torture manual to make the member’s manual with torture cover and the torture manual with member’s cover.

Seahorse Head

Found in the mouth of the manatee after Winslow tells Guybrush a threat has been left for him. It is used on the manatee to be swallowed again. When Coronado De Cava begins to fire on Guybrush’s ship, the main mast is selected to destroy De Cava’s cannon. The seahorse head is then used on the cannon on Guybrush’s ship.

Severed Finger

Available when playing as the voodoo lady. It is not used.

Stinky Earwax

Found in the ear of the manatee, which is reached by climbing the main mast on the ship in the mouth of the manatee. After Winslow suggests using smelling salts to revive Morgan after she has been knocked out, the stinky earwax is used on Morgan.

Tongue of the Manatee

After the flopping fish has been used on the bongos in the manatee, the tongue of the manatee can be taken from the pool of bile. It is used on the giant manatee to understand him.

Torture Manual

Found in the iron monkey in the belly of the manatee. It is combined with the new member’s manual to make the member’s manual with torture cover and the torture manual with member’s cover.

Torture Manual with Member’s Cover

Made by combining the torture manual with the new member’s manual in the inventory. It is given to Murray to convince him to vote for Guybrush.

Walkthrough

The mouth of the Manatee


The episode starts in the mouth of the manatee. Walk east to meet Coronado De Cava in the encampment. Say "So, I have this locket I’m supposed to give to you.": Coronado presses a button on the locket and is possessed by the voodoo lady, who orders Guybrush not to say anything about the locket.

When De Cava asks where he got the locket, select any topic and Guybrush will tell him everything anyway. Guybrush tries to persuade De Cava that he is on his honeymoon with his wife, and De Cava says he will await her arrival as proof. Walk up the gangplank to board the ship. Climb up the main mast to the crow’s nest. Take the stinky earwax:

Climb back down the main mast. Exit the ship and return to Winslow. Talk to Winslow and he will tell Guybrush about the different steps needed to revive Morgan. Click Morgan’s wrist to see a tattoo of the name Gus. Take Morgan’s sword to see the name Dante Dragotta. Click Morgan’s boots and an assassin’s ledger will drop out.

Use the stinky ear wax on Morgan to wake her up. She agrees to pose as Guybrush’s wife for De Cava, but only if he signs a picture first. After signing the card, Guybrush and Morgan walk over to De Cava where he decides to ask them two questions to prove they are man and wife. Select any topic twice and De Cava will capture Guybrush and Morgan in cages to question them further. Select "Choose and answer" and then select the following answers to De Cava’s questions:

Q. She is quite a skilled fighter. Who trained her in the ways of combat?
A. Dante Dragotta.

Q. She recently purchased a ship. This vessel is known as "The Knave of…blank."
A. Toro.

Q. She was recently affected by the death of someone very close to her. Uncle… what?
A. Jugbender.

Q. What was her favourite pet?
A. Gomez.

Q. What was the name of her first love?
A. Gustavo.

Q. Who is her greatest idol?
A. Guybrush Threepwood.

De Cava realises that Guybrush and Morgan may be married after all. Say "What’s the deal with the sacred manatee mating grounds?": It’s the home of La Esponja Grande. Say "Where’s the rest of your crew?": He thinks that they died in the belly of the manatee. Say "When are we due to arrive at the mating grounds?": De Cava says that the manatee has a problem with his inner ear which is affecting his sense of direction, and says that he will be able to make a new cochlea for the manatee if Guybrush brings him some grubs. Guybrush walks back and falls down to the belly of the manatee.

Getting a unanimous vote from the crew

After landing in the belly, Guybrush sees that Coronado’s crew are alive and well. Bugeye walks toward Guybrush and starts talking to them. Select any topic to start talking to the rest of the crew.

Walk east down the slope and talk to the surly pirate, Bugeye. He says that Guybrush can only join the brotherhood if there is a unanimous vote. When he asks Guybrush if he should call a vote, say "Nah." for now as everyone will vote no. Say "Bye." to exit the conversation with Bugeye. Walk west to the chest to hear a voice from inside. Use the hook on the treasure chest to unlock it:

A short cutscene is shown where the Marquis De Singe is performing an experiment on Guybrush’s hand. Open the treasure chest to meet Murray the talking skull, a returning character from the original Monkey Island games. Guybrush picks him up and he is added to the inventory. Walk west and select the strange growth to return to the bar:

Talk to the bar pirate, Moose. Say "What’s with the funnel?": He drinks on special occasions. Say "I propose a toast! It’s a special occasion!". Select any topic when he asks what the occasion is. While he is drinking out of the straw, use Morgan’s sword on Santino to remove the skull:

Talk to Moose again and say "I propose a toast! It’s a special occasion!". Select any topic when he asks what the occasion is. While he is drinking out of the straw, Use Murray on Santino to replace the skull of the skeleton with Murray. Walk east and talk to the bongo pirate, Noogie. Say "I could really use your vote into the Brotherhood.": Guybrush offers him a favour. Say "I’ll get you a date with Morgan LeFlay!": Noogie says that he will give Guybrush his vote if the date goes well, and hands over a new member’s manual in the meantime.

Walk west and talk to Morgan. Say "See Noogie over there? Pretty cute, eh?": Morgan says she has feigned enough romance for one day. Say "Did I say date? I meant RECON mission.": Guybrush says there are three phases to the mission. Select "Slyly interrogate him.", "Test his grip, in case it comes to fisticuffs.", and "Check for weapons.": After Morgan returns, Noogie agrees to give a yes vote to Guybrush.

Walk east and talk to Bugeye. Say "Will you vote me into the Brotherhood?": He says that Guybrush has to beat him in a pirate face-off competition. Bugeye will perform a face at the start of the competition. When it comes to Guybrush’s turn, you will only be able to select the three expressions that Bugeye has used.

Select the three expressions to lose the face-off. Morgan is so disappointed with Guybrush that she drops her autographed picture and walks away. Walk west and select the weird bump to travel to Noogie. Take the Guybrush picture:

Walk west and go up the slope to the mouth of the manatee. De Cava gives a mug to Guybrush and asks him for a drink, but warns him not to collect any of the yellow bile. Go down the slope to return to the belly. Bugeye approaches Guybrush and tells him to stay away from De Cava. Talk to Morgan and say "ARRR!" to learn the nasty eyebrow expression. Talk to Moose and say "ARRR!" to learn the Gomer mouth expression.

Walk east, talk to Noogie and say "ARRR!" to learn the tweaking eye expression. Talk to Noogie and say "Choice beats! Think you can play something more up-tempo?": The pool of bile will rise. Go down the weird bump and use the mug on the pool of bile. Examine the painting to see that it is covered with grime. Use the mug o’ bile on the painting to learn the fisheyed eye expression. Examine the figurehead on the front of the ship to learn the monkey mouth expression:

Use the mug o’ bile on the odd protuberance to unblock it. Select the odd protuberance to travel to the iron monkey platform. Open the iron monkey to take the torture manual. Select the odd protuberance. Select the strange growth to return to the bar. Combine the new member’s manual with the torture manual in the inventory.

Give the torture manual with member’s cover to Murray to convince him to vote for Guybrush. Go up the slope to the mouth of the manatee. Winslow says that a threat has been left on the ground, and Guybrush automatically walks over to take the seahorse head. Walk east to De Cava and take the monocular when he puts it on the table:

Combine the fish eye of the manatee with the monocular to make the fish eye monocular. Give the fish eye monocular to De Cava. Give the mug o’ bile to De Cava to learn the bugged out eye expression. Return to the belly of the manatee and walk east down the slope. Talk to Bugeye and say "Let’s face-off!". Pay attention to the expressions that Bugeye uses in his turn, and then select three new expressions when it is Guybrush’s turn. Bugeye will then use three new expressions in the second round, so on Guybrush’s turn use the remaining three expressions.

After Bugeye cheats with a new expression, say "Your vote or you’re a dead man.": The Pox then makes Guybrush pull a new face which causes him to win the competition. Talk to Bugeye and say "Call a vote, I’m ready to join up." to receive the unanimous vote.

Helping the manatee

After becoming a member of the brotherhood, Noogie gives the cochlea to Guybrush. Go to the mouth of the manatee and board the ship. Climb up the mast and use the cochlea on the wound to restore the manatee’s sense of direction:

The crew climb up to the mouth and accuse Guybrush of betraying them. Select any topic when talking to the crew and they will start chasing after Guybrush. Talk to Morgan about all three topics and then say "Look… I’m sorry about before. We can do it your way.". When she asks if Guybrush is forgetting something, say "Your sword!". Morgan fights the crew and ties them up on the ship.

After the cutscene, the ship leaves the manatee and surfaces at the manatee mating grounds. Select any topic when De Cava asks if Guybrush can hold his breath for ten minutes and he will then push him into the water. Open the treasure chest to take the golden wrench:

Run east into the cave to see the giant female manatee. Guybrush returns to the surface and talks to Coronado, who says that Santino used to be able to understand the manatee language. Say "Where did Santino learn to understand manatee?": He learned it from the Marquis. Say "How did Santino make all the manatee sounds?": He used a device called the tongue of the manatee. Say "Okay, got it." to end the conversation. Take the flopping fish on the bag:

Go upstairs and examine the locket on top of the barrel:

Use the Guybrush picture on the square picture in the locket. Use the golden wrench on the button in the middle of the locket. Press the button to travel to the voodoo lady’s hut. Examine the voodoo mat to see three cards. Use the fracture card on the actor slot, the journey card on the action slot and the curse card on the target slot:

Press the voodoo bell at the top-left corner of the mat and the Marquis De Singe will enter the room. Select any topic twice when talking to him. Say "I understand that you speak the language of giant manatees.". Say "May I have this book?". Say "Bring me the book of the manatee language or I will hex you.": He doesn’t believe in voodoo. Examine the voodoo mat and put the journey card on the actor slot, the curse card on the action slot and the fracture card on the target slot:

Press the voodoo bell and De Singe will return with the book. Take the book on the table to read the twelve easy steps to understanding the manatee language. Examine the voodoo mat. Use the curse card on the actor slot, the fracture card on the action slot and the journey card on the action slot:

Press the bell to return to the ship. Open the file trunk. Examine Noogie’s notes to see a picture of Sister Agnes. Go downstairs and talk to Noogie. Say "ARRR!". Select the stinky, crosseyed and geezer expressions to scare Noogie:

Talk to Morgan twice and say "Can I borrow your sword for a minute?". Use Morgan’s sword on Murray. Talk to Bugeye and say "I have ways of making you talk!": He will say that Moose had the tongue of the manatee, but left it back in the manatee’s belly. Use the plank to return to the seabed. Walk west to the manatee. Use the seahorse head on the manatee and he will swallow Guybrush. Walk east and use the flopping fish on the bongos to raise the level of the bile:

Select the weird bump. Take the tongue of the manatee from the pool of bile. Use the manatee lax on the pool of bile to exit the manatee. Use the tongue of the manatee on the giant manatee. Talk to the manatee and select any topic to agree to help him. The giant female manatee exits the cave and starts talking. When she asks a question, each correct answer will make her move forward and each wrong answer makes her move back. The aim is to make her move forward enough to exit the cave. The correct answers are shown below:

Q. All of you male manatees are imbeciles. Why do I even bother?
A. Hotels and Restaurants – The television does not work.

Q. I can’t stand you insecure males! I don’t want anyone with a lot of baggage.
A. Money and Customs – I have nothing to declare.

Q. I’m not going to let some lummox buy my love with clever words.
A. Money and Customs – How much is it?
or
A. Money and Customs – Do you accept traveler’s cheques?

Q. Let’s say I let you keep your pathetic life and I take a swim with you, where will we go?
A. Getting Around – I’d like to visit the aquarium.

Q. This mating ground is as dead as my victims. You males are a bunch of cold fish.
A. Hotels and Restaurants – I prefer it hot and spicy.

Q. Watch where you swim. Nobody knows the way to my heart.
A. Getting Around – Do you have a map?

Q. What are you, a glutton for punishment? Haven’t you had enough?
A. Courtesy – Please repeat that.

Q. Why should I give you the time of day?
A. Emergencies – I’ve lost my watch.

Q. You dare to disturb me? Would you like me to dye the ocean depths with your blood?
A. Emergencies – Is that blood or ketchup?

Q. You know what I’ll say after I devour your bloody heart!?
A. Hotels and Restaurants – The meal was excellent.

Q. You think you’re clever, don’t you? You should know that I detest know-it-alls.
A. Courtesy – I’m sorry, I don’t understand.

Q. You think your words can sway me. What will you say when I rip off your head for my collection?
A. Emergencies – Stop, thief!
or
A. Emergencies – I’ve been kidnapped.

Q. You’re not nervous, are you?
A. Emergencies – Where is the bathroom?


Escaping from De Cava

Run east into the cave to take La Esponja Grande to return to the surface. Guybrush and Morgan are captured by the crew and put in cages above the ship. Give the sword to Morgan. Try to reach the rope above Guybrush’s cage to raise Morgan’s cage:

Talk to Morgan and say "Can you reach the rope holding my cage?" to drop down to the deck. De Cava will now begin firing on Guybrush’s ship. Try to climb the main mast on the ship: The cannonball will hit the mast and bounce back to destroy the cannon on De Cava’s ship. Use the seahorse head on the cannon to destroy the other ship and complete the episode.
