Syllablade Tips, Cheats and Strategies

Syllablade is sort of a spelling puzzle RPG-ish game from Naquatic, where the goal is to connect letters to make words and damage your enemies, while using the money earned in combat to buy upgraded equipment. Gamezebo’s Syllablade tips, cheats and strategies won’t make spelling any easier, but it will give you a better chance at showing those demonic hordes who’s boss.

Words Can Hurt

Know the basics. When making words, you can’t use the same letter tile twice (though if there are two different tiles that each have the same letter you can use both). You also can’t “skip” over letters on the board – you have to link them to whatever’s next to them (i.e. up, down, left, right, or diagonal). And, of course, you have to use real words.
Selected tiles will turn green when you’ve made a proper word. Once you let go, the word will be used and your character will attack whatever it is they’re fighting. If it’s not a proper word (the tiles will be blue), nothing will happen.

The more letters the better. Bigger words don’t just deal more damage; they also generate more coins and will give more of a charge to your equipped weapon’s special meter.
Look for letters that will make your word plural or change the tense. For example, if you spell “toy” and there’s an “S” next to the “Y,” consider adding to to make “toys” and form a longer word.
Your special ability can be used at any point in a word. Once your ability is ready, one of the tiles on the board will be replaced with its icon (i.e. swords, a health potion, etc). You have to make a word and connect it to this icon in order to use the ability, but you aren’t limited in HOW you incorporate it. This means you can start on the ability icon and then spell a word off of it, spell a word and end on the icon, or even spell part of a word and use the icon as a bridge to sort of “cheat” and skip to a letter tile that you normally wouldn’t be able to reach.

Pay attention to letter values. There’s a small number in the bottom-right corner of each letter tile which lets you know how many “points” it’s worth (note that these values go up despite still reading as 1s, 2s, etc as your attack stat improves). The less common the letter – like “W” or “Y” – the more it’s worth.
When a letter tile spends a turn at the bottom of the grid without moving, it’ll get a silver border. If it goes another turn without moving, that border will turn to gold. Letters’ values increase quite a bit as this happens, with gold borders granting the biggest boost.
Strategize! If you take into account the border-change effect and the way tiles fall when you clear space below them, you can sort of plan a move or two ahead. If you’re careful and patient, you can get high value letters to earn a gold border, then use them in a word for significant damage.

Spell big and spell precise. Whenever you use five or more letters to spell a word, it’ll increase a sort of special meter that will grant you a Gem once it fills up. The same applies to spelling a word that deals exactly enough damage to match your enemy’s current health (i.e. you don’t put them into the negatives). Do this when you can.
Gems are awesome. As you start to collect gems little by little, you’ll begin to find more varieties. Some heal you, some deal direct damage to the enemy, some will prevent the enemy from attacking on their next turn, and so on. And the best part is, using a gem doesn’t cost you your turn. You can use one or more of them and then spell a word.

Use bombs wisely. You can press the bomb icon to completely wipe the board clean and get a new assortment of letters. This is useful if you can’t find words to spell, but be careful as wiping the board uses your turn.
Keep an eye on the enemy count. Each level has a set number of enemies you have to defeat. If you’ve got a lot left, you’ll want to try and keep your health up.
Some enemies have special skills. Like the snowmen, which can occasionally freeze you. I hate the snowmen.

Word Swag

Buy whatever you can whenever you can. You can spend the coins you earn from fighting in the Items menu. Here you’ll find all sorts of goodies (weapons, armor, helmets, facial coverings, and so on) that will make your character stronger.
Figure out what you want. You can see what a piece of equipment improves by looking at the icon next to its name. The sword increases attack, the heart increases health, and the dice increase luck (how likely enemy attacks are to miss).
You don’t have to wear equipment to gain its benefits. Whenever you buy a piece of gear that boosts attack, health, or luck, that stat will be permanently increased regardless of whether or not you equip it. So if you prefer a specific combination of cosmetic items you absolutely can stick with them.

Weapons also have special abilities in addition to regular stat improvements. You can see what a weapon’s ability is by looking at the icon below its name (below, not next to). For example, the swords icon will give you a special damage boost ability in combat, while the health potion icon will let you heal – without using a healing gem, no less. You’ll have to experiment to see what everything does, as you’ll continue to unlock new weapons with new skills as you progress.
Check your items menu often. As you complete new areas and defeat bosses, you’ll unlock more equipment to buy.
