Game Introduction – Small Town Terrors: Pilgrim’s Hook

Welcome to the Small Town Terrors: Pilgrim’s Hook walkthrough on Gamezebo.  Small Town Terrors – Pilgrim’s Hook is an adventure game with puzzles and hidden object scenes. This walkthrough includes tips and tricks, helpful hints and a strategy guide on how to complete the game.

General Tips

  • Play is mostly linear although there are some options for the order in which to explore locations, complete tasks and find inventory items. Mention is made for alternate locations for collecting inventory items and different items capable of completing an objective.
  • This guide completes tasks in the most efficient way possible. Not all inventory items are picked up when first encountered; tasks are completed when all required items have been assembled.
  • To make it easier to find where this guide may differ from your own play, collected inventory items are CAPITALIZED and highlighted in white with a blue border in the screenshots.
  • If you don’t have an item referenced in this guide, press and hold the “Ctrl” key while pressing the “F” key. This opens a Find area in your web browser. Type in the name of the object as it appears in this guide. Press the “Enter” key to find references to the item.
  • Consult the game journal for story information, playing hints and tips to solve puzzles.

Options

  • Adjust the music, effects, ambient and voice volumes.
  • Toggle the custom cursor or wide screen on or off.

Difficulty Modes

  • There are three playing modes: Casual, Expert or Hardcore.
  • Casual mode offers the most assistance during play. Interactive locations are highlighted with sparkles; hint and skip buttons recharge quickly. Hints direct movement to the first available location with active tasks and zooms in on the task area.
  • Expert mode increases the challenge. Interactive locations are not indicated; hint and skip buttons recharge more slowly. Hints are not as explicit.
  • Hardcore mode offers the most challenging way to play. Interactive areas are not indicated; hint and skip buttons recharge very slowly; Hints are vague and the map does not highlight areas with open tasks.
  • The playing mode may be changed only by creating a new profile from the main menu and restarting the game.
  • This guide was written playing in casual mode.

Cursors

  • The default custom cursor is an arrow. It can change into the following icons:
  • A magnifying glass indicates an interactive area requiring closer inspection.
  • A hand means an item may be opened or collected for inventory.
  • Rotating gears mean an object requires an inventory item.
  • Thought circles show that a character has information.

Hidden Object Scenes

  • Hidden object scenes are the standard list of items to find.
  • Items listed in light gray require interacting with the scene to reveal or create the item.
  • Cursor icons in these scenes are the same as in the rest of the game.

Hint and Skip Buttons

  • The hint button is in the lower right of the screen.
  • How much assistance the hint provides depends on the play mode selected.
  • The hint button can also be used in a hidden object scene to locate an item.
  • Puzzles may be skipped once the skip button has charged.

Journal and Map

  • The Journal icon is in the lower left of the screen. It contains three sections: notes, objectives and a map.
  • Notes are the main section and are updated regularly with story information and hints for solving puzzles.
  • Objectives are a list of tasks that need completing.  They aid in determining movement and are a reference for incomplete tasks at each location.
  • The interactive map, obtained early in the game, can be consulted here or from the game screen.
  • Locations on the map are added as they are discovered.
  • A glowing location icon indicates there is something to do in that area. Click the location to travel to that site.
  • Location names in this guide correspond to those on the map.

Chapter 1: Opening the City Gates

  • Speak with the man (A) to open the scene and receive the first objective.
  • Look inside the boat (B); pick up the TRUNK KEY.
  • Zoom in on the trunk (C); insert the TRUNK KEY in the lock.
  • Click the key to open the lock and open the first hidden object scene.

  • Use the knife (1) to cut the strap on the chest (2) to find a seashell.
  • Use the glove (3) to pick up a shellfish from the container (4).
  • Pour the contents of the oilcan (5) on the diving helmet (6) to get a starfish.
  • Move the cloth (7) to find a starfish. Open the book (8) to find another starfish.
  • Pull the lever (9) to uncover a seashell.
  • Finding the rest of the seashells, shellfish and starfish add an additional item to find: a WINCH HANDLE.
  • Enter the boathouse.

  • Click the face in the water (D).
  • Pick up the POLE HOOK (E).
  • Attach the WINCH HANDLE to the mechanism (F). Click the handle to raise the trapdoor.
  • Go down the steps.

  • Grab the LANTERN.
  • Take the picture attached to the door.
  • Exit the boathouse.
  • Give the LANTERN to the man; receive the Map.
  • Head right.

  • This is first map location indicated by an icon of its major feature (a giant crab) rather than being labeled. You may return to this junction by opening the map and clicking the crab.
  • Areas are added to the map only after they have been visited.
  • Pick up the ROCK on the side of the path.
  • Go forward to the gate.

  • Take the AXE embedded in the tree on the left.
  • Look into the hollow in the right tree; take the IRON RUNGS (1/4).
  • Alternate inventory item: If you did not pick up the ROCK by the side of the path at the junction, take one from the pile at the base of the tree.
  • Return to the junction; go right to the wharf.
  • Play the hidden object scene on the boat.

  • Use the lighter (1) on the lantern (2) to illuminate the darker portion of the scene to see the Tin Can.
  • Take the pry bar (3) to the metal plate (4) and find the Shark Tooth.
  • Attach the hook (5) to the diving helmet (6) to lift it and find the Bird.
  • Use the key (7) on the cage padlock (8) to get to the Lobster.
  • Lift the bucket (9) to find the Snake.
  • Remove the cloth (10) covering the Oxygen Tank.
  • Remove the bricks (11) hiding the Binoculars.
  • Find the rest of the listed objects. Take the IRON RUNGS (2/4) as the final item (12).

  • Zoom in on the floating debris.
  • Use the POLE HOOK to retrieve the SHELL BRACELET.
  • Look at the Fishing Tackle Shop window.
  • Use the AXE or ROCK to smash the glass; enter the shop.

  • Take the note from the cash register.
  • Look at the lure display case to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to find the pairs of lures that share a common shape or feature.
  • The next screenshot shows the solution.

  • Remove all pairs until one FISHING LURE is left.
  • Exit the shop.
  • Go forward past the whale skeletons to the lighthouse approach.

  • Pick up the FISHING LINE on the stump (A). The FISHING LURE and FISHING LINE combine to return FISHING GEAR to inventory.
  • Zoom in on the ship hull (B).
  • Use the AXE or ROCK to smash the hull; take the CASH REGISTER KEY.
  • Open the map (C). Click the crab to return to the path junction.

  • Examine the tide pool.
  • Pick up the OYSTER on the side of the pool
  • Put the FISHING GEAR on the fish; take the STRIPED BASS.
  • Zoom in on the crab’s hole.
  • Use the STRIPED BASS to lure the crab out of its hole.

  • Look again at the crab’s lair; take the PLASTIC SHOVEL.
  • Look at the base of the second line of boards; pick up the SIGIL PIECE.
  • Go right to the wharf; enter the tackle shop.
  • Zoom in on the cash register; add the CASH REGISTER KEY to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to press the keys until all of the keys are in the down position.
  • The next screenshot shows the solution.

  • Press the circled buttons in the order shown.
  • Take the SIGIL PIECE from the open drawer.
  • Grab the EMPTY SPRAY BOTTLE.

  • Look at the bottom of the far aquarium.
  • Use the PLASTIC SHOVEL to dig out the WIRE BRUSH from the box of night crawlers.
  • Dip the EMPTY SPRAY BOTTLE in the solution in the bucket; receive WEED KILLER.
  • Exit the shop. Go down once and forward to return to the city gates.
  • Insert the two SIGIL PIECES in the gate lock inset.

Chapter 2: Activating the Lighthouse

Small Town Terrors: Pilgrim's Hook
  • Pick up the newspaper article on the statue base.
  • Spray the WEED KILLER on the shrub to uncover a hidden object scene.

  • Use the clippers (1) on the bush (2) to find some Mushrooms.
  • Use the bottle (3) to capture the fireflies (4); the bottle of fireflies automatically goes into the log (5) to help illuminate the area.
  • Take the stick on the ground (6) and poke the Frog at the back of the log (7).
  • The rest of the items are highlighted in white.
  • Take the HAND SAW for the final item (8).
  • Go forward to the town square.
  • Attempt to follow the road on the left of the statue; go forward to the playground.

  • Zoom in on the swing set.
  • Use the HAND SAW to cut the rope.
  • Pick up the CAR TIRE and KNOTTED ROPE.
  • Go forward to the church.

  • Pick up the ANTLER from the center of the candles.
  • Go down two times to return to the square.
  • Affix the ANTLER to the statue; receive a WHALE AMULET.
  • Open the map; click the glowing whale icon.

  • Place the WHALE AMULET on the bones to view a cutscene.

  • Pick up the bottle of WHALE OIL.
  • Examine the bones to the left of the path.

  • Use the map to return to the playground.

  • Pour the WHALE OIL on the plate to remove the rust.
  • Click the seesaw; read the note.
  • Take the IRON RUNGS (4/4).
  • Use the Map to go to the lighthouse.
  • Zoom in on the side of the lighthouse.
  • Place the IRON RUNGS (4/4) on the side of the structure.
  • Climb the rungs to the top of the lighthouse.

  • Pick up the EMPTY GAS CAN.
  • Inspect the light.
  • Pick up the NAUTICAL COMPASS by the base of the light.
  • Close the scene and return to the boathouse.
  • Enter the boathouse and go down the cellar steps.

  • Insert the NAUTICAL COMPASS in the housing to open a puzzle.
  • The levers on the door correspond to the direction arrows on the compass.
  • The goal is to press the four levers in the order scratched into the door. The inset above has been brightened to make it easier to read.
  • Press the labeled letters in this order: N-E-W-S-W-E-S-E-W.

  • Look at the spare light in the corner.
  • Take the FOCUSING LENS.
  • Examine the papers on the desk; read the note.
  • Pick up the LENGTH OF HOSE on the floor.
  • Go down three times to exit the boathouse.

  • Zoom in on the boat.
  • Put the EMPTY GAS CAN on the deck; attach the LENGTH OF HOSE.
  • Take the FULL GAS CAN.
  • Return to the Lighthouse location; climb to the top of the lighthouse.

  • Zoom in on the light.
  • Attach the FOCUSING LENS to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to rotate the lenses to form a path from the four outside bulbs to the center.

  • Click the three lenses lettered above as follows: A – 13x; B – 6x; C – 21x.

Chapter 3: Arthur’s Confession

  • Look at the small boat.
  • Click the motor to remove the gas cap.
  • Pour the contents of the FULL GAS CAN into the empty gas tank.
  • Steer toward the shipwreck.

  • Pick up the floating bottle; read the note for story information.
  • Continue forward toward the coral houses.

  • Peer into the fissure.
  • Attach the KNOTTED ROPE to the spike; climb down the rope.

  • Speak with Arthur.
  • Pick up ARTHUR’S CELL PHONE.

  • Zoom in on the broken bottle to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to remove all the pieces until only the bottle neck is left.
  • Only the topmost piece can be removed.
  • The above insets show the order in which to remove the shards. The last piece goes to inventory as a BROKEN BOTTLE.
  • Go down two times to return to the shipwreck.

  • Look at the exposed rigging.
  • Use the BROKEN BOTTLE to cut the netting.
  • Take the KEY.
  • Return to the boathouse pier.

  • Examine the boat’s bow.
  • Use the WIRE BRUSH to remove the barnacles.
  • The name of the boat is added to the journal for a puzzle clue.
  • Go to the boathouse cellar.

  • Examine the desktop.
  • Insert ARTHUR’S CELL PHONE into the charger. Click the phone to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to enter the correct password to unlock the phone.
  • Click the four numbers containing letters associated with the name of Arthur’s boat.
  • Solution. Click the numbers in this order: 8-3-7-2.
  • Take the SOCKET WRENCH and TOWN HALL KEY from the open trunk.
  • Go to the playground.

Chapter 4: Exploring the Town

  • Use the SOCKET WRENCH to remove the SEESAW PLANK.
  • Go down to the town square.
  • Put the SEESAW PLANK across the sinkhole.
  • Go left.

  • Zoom in on the door to the pub.
  • Remove the note on the door; a MAGNET automatically goes to inventory.
  • Receive a request from the publican.
  • Return to the town square.
  • Use the TOWN HALL KEY to open the door to the town hall.

  • Listen to the woman’s plea.
  • Examine the display case.
  • Put the MAGNET on the coin to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to use the magnet to guide the coin through the exhibit items to the upper right corner opening.
  • Touching an item, shelf or wall drops the coin back to its original position.
  • The solution is shown in the following screenshot.

  • The COMMEMORATIVE COIN goes to inventory.
  • Exit the town hall; return to the shop street.

  • Return to the town hall.

  • Place the BAG OF PEANUTS in the doorway to entice the beast from the back room.
  • Look closer at the display on the right.
  • Pick up the SHARP LETTER OPENER and STONE HAMMER.
  • Enter the back room.

  • Use the STONE HAMMER or GOLD BAR to smash the padlock.
  • Play the hidden object scene in the closet.

  • Put the mouse (1) on the creel (2) to find the Kitten.
  • Open the box (3) for the Emerald.
  • Find the rest of the listed objects. The final item, a MANHOLE HOOK goes to inventory.
  • Exit the building; go left to the shops street.
  • Use the MANHOLE HOOK to remove the manhole cover in the middle of the street.
  • Look inside the hole to open a puzzle.

  • The goal is to use the valves and levers to adjust the pressure so the arrow in the main gauge is centered in the green zone.
  • Click the circled wheels and levers once (any order) to solve this puzzle.
  • Receive a VALVE HANDLE.
  • Return to the town square.

  • Look in the fountain.
  • Attach the VALVE HANDLE to the spigot; turn the handle to drain the fountain.
  • Take the FIFTH OF WHISKEY.
  • Return to the pub door.
  • Hand over the FIFTH OF WHISKEY to gain entrance to the pub.
  • Speak to the man.
  • Play the hidden object scene on the bar.

  • Click the horseshoe (1) to remove the grapes hiding a slice of cheese (2).
  • Use the chalk (3) to draw a cheese wedge (4) on the blackboard.
  • Remove the hamburger bun (5) to see the cheese slice.
  • Open the drawer (6) for another cheese wedge.
  • Find the rest of the pieces of cheese. Take the CHEESE GRATER.
  • Use the map to return to the wharf. Enter the tackle shop.
  • Use the KEY to open the door to the treasure room.

  • Pick up the SCOOP.
  • Use the SHARP LETTER OPENER to cut the ropes.
  • Take the GOLD BAR.
  • Go to the path inside the town gates.

  • Use the CHEESE GRATER to shave off a MOUND OF SALT from the salt lick.
  • Go forward to the playground.
  • Feed the MOUND OF SALT to the slug; retrieve the SHUCKING BLADE.
  • Return to the pub.

  • Pick up the DART and CAR KEYS.
  • Look at the emergency fire cabinet.
  • Use the GOLD BAR or STONE HAMMER to break the glass; take the FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

  • Place the OYSTER on the base; attach the SHUCKING BLADE to the bar.
  • Pull the lever down; take the PEARL from the shucked oyster.

  • Pick up the QUILL.
  • Use the CAR KEYS to open the car door; look inside the car
  • Take the CROSS handing from the rearview mirror.

  • Use the LIBRARY KEY to open the door.

  • Grab the LADDER.
  • Play the hidden object scene.

  • Drag the typewriter key (1) to the keyboard (2) to type a Name.
  • Put the pencil (3) in the sharpener; click the sharpened pencil (4) to write a Name.
  • Place the magnifying glass (5) over the card to see a Name.
  • Open the purse (6) to find a Binder Clip.
  • Find the rest of the items; SCISSORS combine with the SHELL BRACELET to create a LANTERN WICK.
  • Exit the library.

  • Lean the LADDER against the post.
  • Peer at the clock face to store puzzle information in the journal.
  • Look closer at the gazebo.
  • Pick up the BRASS POLISH.
  • Go to the church.
  • Use the FIRE EXTINGUISHER to put out the fire.
  • Enter the church and speak to the priest.
  • Play the hidden object scene on the table next to the priest.

  • Open the vessel (1). Put the grape on the bunch (2). Add loose grapes (3), (4) and (5) to the bunch.  Take the Fruit.
  • Use the glove (6) to remove the lid (7) and find a piece of Fruit.
  • Remove the lid (8) to find more Fruit.
  • Find the rest of the items. The Key goes to inventory as a CABINET KEY.

  • Zoom in on the pulpit.
  • Put the CROSS and PEARL on the string of beads. Take the ROSARY.
  • Pick up the LINEN CLOTH and the CANDLE HOLDER.

  • Look at the hymnal board.
  • Open the small draw; remove the BLANK TILE.
  • Give the priest the ROSARY.
  • Go through the door that is revealed after the priest leaves.

  • Pick up the ROSES and BIBLE from the grave on the right.
  • Go down twice to the front of the church.

  • Put the CANDLE HOLDER on the circle of candles.
  • Receive a LIT CANDLE for inventory.
  • Go down once to the town square.
  • Examine the trashcans by the building on the right.
  • Place the ROSES on the side of the can to distract the insects; take the DRAWER HANDLE.
  • Enter the town hall; go through to the back room.

  • Use the BRASS POLISH and LINEN CLOTH on the tarnished plaques to open a puzzle.
  • The goal is to arrange the plaques in ascending order by dates served.
  • Swap any two plaques.
  • The solution is shown in the next screenshot.

  • Correctly arranging the plaques automatically closes the puzzle.
  • Click the plaque that pops up to add the information to the journal.

  • Look at the drawers.
  • Affix the missing DRAWER HANDLE.
  • Take the SCREWDRIVER from the drawer.
  • Click the statue to open a puzzle.
  • Note: If the puzzle won’t open, return to the street in front of the library, place the LADDER against the post and look at the clock face.

  • The goal is to position the handles so they match the diagram shown on the clock in front of the library. A reference was added to the journal when the clock was examined. Opening the journal while working the puzzle does not reset or close the puzzle.
  • Clicking one handle moves it and its associated handles one position clockwise. The positions correspond to the numbers on a clock.
  • The above screenshot shows the journal reference (inset) and the handle starting positions. The color highlights on the handles show how they are connected. There are two sections containing three handles and one with two handles.
  • The best strategy is to position one section at a time. Use the handles at positions 12, 1 and 2 as section references when ascertaining if the sections handles are correctly position. For example, clicking the handle at position 12 moves it to the 1 o’clock position and its associated handle to 5 o’clock. This is a valid move. There are four empty positions on the solution diagram: 4, 6, 9 and 12.
  • Hint. Solve for the 2-6-8 handles (yellow) first. There are only two possible positions where one or more handles do not point to a blank number. Solve for the 2-6-8 handles next based on the first set possibilities. This set will also have only two possible positions. Correctly solving the first two sets leaves only one possible position for the 12-4 handles.
  • The next screenshot gives the solution.

  • The above screenshot shows the handles ending position highlighted in the same colors as their starting positions from the previous screenshot.
  • Press Reset.
  • Begin with the 1-5-10 handles. Click any of these three handles 10 times until the handle that started in position 1 is now at position 11.
  • Next click any of the 2-5-8 handles 11 times until the handle that began at 2 o’clock is now at 1 o’clock.
  • Click the either of the remaining two handles to rotate the 12 o’clock handle to the 10 o’clock position.
  • Receive the LANTERN TOP for inventory.
  • Return to the library.

  • Pick up the DOOR STOP at the base of the door.
  • Enter the reference room.

  • Read the memo on the desk.
  • Look closer at the bookshelves.
  • Inserting the BIBLE into the empty slot opens a compartment.
  • Take the GAVEL from the compartment; read the note that was under the gavel.

  • Zoom in on the bookstand.
  • Insert the QUILL in the inkwell.
  • Put the BLANK TILE on the book.
  • Click the quill. Pick up the NUMBERED TILE.
  • Return to the church.

  • Put the NUMBERED TILE in the empty slot on the hymnal board.
  • Take the ANCHOR MEDALLION from the drawer that pops open.
  • Go left to the graveyard.

  • Use the GAVEL to drive in the wedge and break the column.

  • Scroll the numbers for the date of death until they match the plaque from the town hall.
  • Take the EYE OF CASTOR.
