How to Play

Skylanders Lost Islands

  • UI: Let’s first get you acquainted with the game’s user interface.
  • Level: Your current level and experience bar will be located in the top left of the screen at all times.  It will give you a snapshot of where you are relative to your next level.  Levels determine what types of buildings you can have, what kind of obstacles (such as trees or brush) that you can clear in your islands, and so on.
  • Skylander Count: This will show you how many Skylanders you own currently.  There are 55 you can own.
  • Gems: Gems are the game’s premium currency.  This is currency you will use to purchase special Skylanders, buildings and decorations.  You will earn this by leveling up and completing goals (More on goals in a bit).
  • Coins: Coins are the base currency of the game.  You will earn this by going on adventures (again, more on this later) and completing goals.
  • Energy: Energy is used to deploy your Skylanders on adventures to bring back gold to your island.
  • Island Icons:  Like all games of this genre, there is a persistent cooldown happening somewhere on the island.  For clearing debris, you pay gold and gain experience, buildings give you experience, adventure balloons (up near the top of the image) will give you gold and then lastly, we have farmland , which is where you harvest energy.

  • Action Toolbar: The action toolbar is the main source of getting things done in the game.  Here you will find the settings (gears), social (people), movement (yes, you can move your structures around to make better use of your space), building (house) and a button to conveniently see your Skylanders.

  • Quests: Quests are one of the more important factors in the game.  Especially early on, these guide you to do things that are vital for your island to thrive, such as building farmland to build energy.  They will also provide you tasks to do while you level up your island and gain more and more things to purchase and go on new adventures with your Skylanders.

  • Adventures: This is the part of the game where you gain your coins to build out your island.  First, you must have an “Adventure Balloon” (the tutorial period in the game will guide you to your first balloon) on your island, and then have a Skylander (you get one immediately) to select to send on a mission.  As you send out your Skylanders to missions, they gain experience points and eventually level up their “hero ranking”.  Each level opens up a new adventure for them to depart on.  Each mission takes gradually more time to cooldown in real-time and they cost more energy to complete, but the rewards are significantly better in terms of gold as they progress.
  • Adventure Tips:  As you gain your island’s level, it increases the number of Skylanders you can own at one time.  Make sure to build enough adventure balloons for each Skylander that you own to be able to be out collecting gold for you, but in the meantime, make sure that you are spending some of that time farming energy to ensure that they are able to go out on their adventures.

  • The above screenshot is a field in the game.  To plant, you of course will have to have one available (once again, the tutorial will instruct you to have one—in the early going, I would suggest having four or five). As Skylanders return from an adventure, simply tap your farm fields and choose to plant the option that gives you the most energy.  The game has it set up that choosing some of the smaller options actually is more efficient to select from a cost/benefit standpoint, but you probably won’t like getting notifications every 2 minutes to harvest your fields, so getting a big bushel of energy is better than getting it pieced out.

  • Expansion:  You can expand to new islands by swiping down and to the side.  There are a number of different islands available to you for purchase, but I would advise clearing out and exhausting your initial digs before moving on to bigger and better things—as you can see, expansion can be pricey.

  • Daily Bonus: Like many games of this type, you get rewarded for playing every day.  The more you continuously play, the bigger the rewards will be.  Neat loyalty trick, huh?

  • Random Events:  Quite frequently, there are random events popping up on your island that will need a Skylander’s attention—clearing out a troll camp or shooing away sheep, for example.  Simply tap on the icon, which will pop up a new screen to select one of your Skylanders to clear them out.  At the end you’ll gain some gold and experience for your Skylander at the cost of some energy—think of these as mini-adventures.
  • Stackable Rewards:  Luckily, the game does not punish you very harshly if you do not continuously farm your experience. As you come back from a hiatus from the game, the experience in your building stack, so rather than losing the experience that you would gain by constantly harvesting, you simply gain a big chunk.

  • Social Features: Unfortunately, as of writing the game’s social features have not been created.  Going off of other games of this type, visiting other player’s island and perhaps being able to interact with their island, as well as taking and sharing pictures of your island on Facebook/Twitter are just a slice of what is to come.
