Sky: Children of the Light is absolutely an experience you should have for yourself. You’ll have some truly epic moments while exploring this breathtaking world that a guide could easily ruin.

The joy in Sky is in discovering it for yourself, preferably with any nearby players. While in many games other players are generally regarded as a nuisance, in Sky they’re integral to the experience. It’s a bit like an MMO in that regard, except instead of hitting dragons with swords you’re working together to explore the environment and solve puzzles.

At this point, it might seem a bit disingenuous of us to write a guide for a game that’s best played without one. In this instant, we’ve changed up our approach and are instead focusing this guide on helping you to get the most out of your experience with Sky. We’ll include no spoilers whatsoever, so don’t worry.

Sky: Children of the Light Beginner’s Guide – How it Works:

We’re not going to dig deep into the inner workings of Sky in this section, but will instead provide a brief introduction into its world.

You play as a highly customisable playable character. You can slide your thumb on the left of the screen to move around, and the right to pan the camera. Consider the two sides of the screen as traditional analogue sticks.

Tap the right side of the screen and you’ll jump, while if you tap and hold you can temporarily fly. However, there’s more to this movement system than meets the eye, so we encourage you to explore for hidden mechanics. All we will say is that flying uses an energy system, which you can recharge by flying low over clouds or passing light-coloured butterflies.

On the very top of your screen you’ll see a pair of wings. You can tap on these to open up a menu that includes any expressions you’ve unlocked. You can use these to interact with your fellow players in a variety of different ways, and you’ll unlock more as you progress.

The goal of Sky, aside from exploration and discovery, is to rescue spirits, which are dotted around the game’s many levels. This is also how you unlock new expressions.

There are two in-game currencies to collect: candles and hearts. You collect candles by lighting or passing by lit candles, which you can find by exploring the world. You can also buy them out right as an IAP. Either way, they allow you to upgrade your character in numerous different ways, and purchase the other currency, hearts.

Hearts allow you to purchase cosmetic items, including masks, hair styles, wings, instruments, and more. Apparently you can get them as gifts from other players too, but nobody has been that generous with us just yet.

Sky: Children of the Light Tips and Tricks:

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s take a look at a few spoiler free tips that should help you make the most out of Sky:

  • Explore: Our first tip is just to get out there and explore. Sky really isn’t a linear experience, and you’ll miss a lot if you just stick to the path and chase after spirits. We’ve had our best moments with it when we’ve just went for a wander.
  • Other players are helpful: This isn’t your average MMORPG, where other players seem to just be there to take gathering materials, steal your kill, and generally get in your way – players in Sky: Children of the Light are genuinely helpful. Work with them and you’ll have some truly wonderful moments.
  • Interact with everything: Whenever you see a prompt on the screen, tap on it. Chances are it will lead to a nice interaction with the environment or another player. Also, always light candles: you’ll thank us later.
  • Cast spells: As you progress, you’ll unlock a bunch of spells that can help both you and other players. Use them – there’s really no need not to.
  • Go back to previously visited locations: It’s worth checking back into previously visited locations later, when you’ve upgraded your ability to fly and unlocked some new spells. Chances are, you’ve missed a bunch of stuff.
