Welcome to Gamezebo’s walkthrough for Scratches – Director’s Cut.

How to play

Main menu

Back: This option only appears when you are currently playing a game. Select it to return to the current position in the game.

New: When you select a new game from the main menu, you will have a choice whether to play the Director’s Cut of Scratches or The Last Visit episode. I would recommend playing through the director’s cut first, as The Last Visit takes place after the events of the director’s cut, and to fully understand what is going on you will need to have played through this.

Setup: Toggle hints and surround music, set the camera and text speed, set the gamma correction levels and toggle between slideshow mode and alternate control. See the controls section for more information on slideshow mode and alternate control.

Load: Restore a previously saved game. The load screen is also useful for keeping track of the location, day and time that games were saved.

Save: Save the game at the current position.

Quit: Exit the game.

Controls

Move the mouse to look around or use the arrow keys to snap to a certain direction. There are different movement options available that can be selected from the setup section of the main menu. Slideshow mode would be useful on slower computers, as it allows you to move in a series of snapshots instead of one fluid animation. When alternate control is enabled, the screen will move whenever the mouse is moved. When it is disabled, the screen will only move when the cursor moves to the edges of the screen.

When the cursor moves over a hotspot it will change to an icon. Left click the mouse to interact with a hotspot. Right click the mouse to bring up the inventory. The icons in the game are shown below:

  • Closed hand: No action.
  • Watch: Appears when loading.
  • Index finger raised: Move toward a different area.
  • Index finger lowered: Move back.
  • Magnifying glass: Examine an object.
  • Open hand: Take or use an object.
  • Blue arrow: Appears when the slideshow movement mode is used.

Press the Escape key to skip cutscenes and lines of dialogue.

Inventory

Right click the mouse to open the inventory. The two objects at the top-left corner of the inventory are Michael’s notebook and the magnifying glass. The notebook is updated automatically as you progress through the game. The magnifying glass can be selected to examine other objects in the inventory. All other objects apart from the top-left two are added to the inventory as you play through the game. Left click to select an item, then right click to close the inventory so that the object is visible on the playing area. The object can now be used on the appropriate object by left clicking it. Some puzzles in the game will also require you to combine two different objects in the inventory.

Keeping track of time

The director’s cut version of the game is organised into segments of time for the three days that Michael spends in the house. To check the time, press escape to bring up the main menu, select Save and then click one of the ten files to save the game. Next, press escape and then select Load to see the file you have just saved along with the location, day and current time. Another way of checking the time is to examine the grandfather clock in the main hall at the front of the house.

Maps of the manor

While visiting the room with paintings on the second day, you will be able to examine some blueprints of the manor on the table. The maps of the three floors of the manor are shown below:
