Game Introduction – RAD Soldiers

RAD Soldiers is an offline and online turn-based strategy game developed by Splash Damage where players control soldiers, attack and defend targets and try to best both human and AI opponents. Gamezebo’s quick start strategy guide will provide you with detailed images, tips, information, and hints on how to play your best game.

Getting Started

• To download the game, click the “Play Now” button at the top of this page.
• Once downloaded, click the “play” button
• That’s it! You’re ready to start the game!

How to Play:

• Movement: Movement in the game is quite simple.  First, you must touch the soldier that you want to move.  From there, you will see all the white squares on the game space.  The game will automatically show all the potentialities of your movement depending on the character (Certain characters have a larger range of motiondue to a number of different variables). From there, tap your white square twice and voila—you’re there!
• Energy: In the top left of the screen you can see how much energy your character have.  In this case, Hipster Dave has 12 energy.  For each square moved, it counts as a certain amount of energy—again, this is determined based on the character type.  Additionally, energy is used when you attack opponents.
• Health:  Health is also displayed in the top left of the screen.  This is to show you how much damage the character can sustain in attacks.  Once it reaches zero, the player dies and cannot be used anymore.  Certain characters can heal themselves and others through special abilities.
• Special Abilities: Different characters have a number of unique special abilities that they have at their disposal.  Hipster Dave, for example, can throw grenades.  This is a powerful attack that can cause massive damage to an enemy player even if they are behind cover.  What the special attack is can be found just under the character’s picture in the top left hand of the screen.  The grenade throw, for example, costs three energy to use and you have one use of it.  The energy cost and quantities of it are listed right on the special ability button.

• Attacking: In order to defeat your enemies, the best way is to kill them.  To do that, you’ll have to get within range.  Both players will have the same objective (hold a position on the map), so you won’t have to run anyone down—combat is thrust upon you and your opponents (unless you’re both sissies).  When you get within range, you’ll be able to tap the opponent to attack them.  Each attack will cost you a set amount of energy depending on whether or not it is a special attack, basic attack and lastly the character type that you are attacking with
• Sights. In the above screenshot, you’ve probably noticed the little “aim sights” on the different tiles.  What these sights represent are positions where you can attack the enemy.  More importantly, they also increase in size if various positions give you  a better vantage point to attack the enemy for more damage per attack.

• Defensive Positions:  Strewn about the levels are a variety of different pieces of cover.  They might be concrete slabs, fences, cars, and so on.  In order to shield yourself from direct attack, you can place your character behind these pieces of cover.  This makes the enemy have to move to your flank to get the drop on you, which will cost them additional energy. And that is more energy for movement and less on attacking you.  However, certain characters, like the aforementioned Hipster Dave, have grenade attacks that can be used to hop over cover, so do keep this in mind if you think you’re at all safe from attack.

• Objectives: Each map will have an objective for you and the AI or player controlled opponent to attempt to capture.  This is a point in the map, signified by the white boxed outline shown in the screenshot above.  If you also notice near the top of the screen, you’ll see five blank boxes on both sides of a white flag icon.  For every turn that you have your units in the objective area uncontested, you fill in the blank box.  Control the space uncontested for five turns and you win.  Early on, however, you’ll be fighting with two or three characters, so it will mostly come down to meeting each other at the objective point and then killing off each other’s characters.

• Undo: One of the neat mechanics of the game is the undo feature.  If you make a mistake in moving your character, you can hit the undo button (shown in the bottom left corner of the screenshot).  This will place your character in the spot before the move no worse for the wear—all energy will be given back for the move. This is great for those times you had an initial idea for a strategy but see something different and want to change your move to accommodate.

Modes, Menu Screens and More:

• Game Modes: You have the option to play online with real opponents, challenges or quick games.  There are also two expansions available to purchase that will bring new challenges and new maps.

• Multiplayer: The game handles multiplayer much like a Words with Friends. You can select from random opponents or friends.  You make your turn and then it moves to your opponent to make their move.  There is no need to play out a full game right away, as you can play over time when each person gets a spare moment.  You can invite friends to play with you through Facebook integration, send an e-mail request, or search for them by their username in the game.
• Challenges: This is where you will play the AI.  Challenges vary from easy to hard and how many enemies the AI team will have, and the types of enemies you will be facing.  There are stealthy melee types, heavy weapon characters that are slow but pack a big punch, and then quick machine gunners.

• Game Store: In order to defeat some of the tougher challenges, you will need to go to the store to purchase them.  They can be purchased for coins or “RAD Bucks”.  Coins are accrued with each victory in challenges or multiplayer skirmishes, while RAD Bucks are earned when you level up your commander (picked at the outset of the game—it doesn’t matter which you choose, it’s just a boy or a girl—they have the same attributes).  The above screenshot shows some of the prices for various characters.  You can also pick up different shirts, skins and other customizable items from the game’s store to make your RAD soldier stand out from the crowd.
