How to Play

PITFALL!

  • Tutorial:  To familiarize yourself with the game, the game has a tutorial that guides you with the controls and the general gameplay.  If you have not played a game like Temple Run (http://import.local/games/temple-run), it is advisable that you play the tutorial first so you know the basic controls and the additions that Pitfall throws in to make things feel new and different.

PITFALL!

  • Crystals :  As you run along in the world, you can gather crystals. Crystals are used to purchase items and upgrades in the game’s store.
  • Gems: Crystals, however, are not the only currency—there are also gems to collect. Like most freemium games (which, as you can see from the top of the page, this game is not), Pitfall has two currency systems.  Gems are earned by leveling up or by purchasing them with real cash. Most items in the store require both gems and crystals to purchase. Screenshot below shows you the prices for gems.

  • Macaw Tokens and Checkpoints: Every 2000M you open up a checkpoint in the game, as well as the ability to start there when you fire up a new game.  The cost is macaw tokens, which are the gold coin you see in the above screenshot. They are earned when you open each of the 2000M goals (you also get a few to start with).  You can also purchase macaw tokens in the game’s store. Every game where you start at a specific meter checkpoint costs you macaw tokens.

PITFALL!

  • Perspectives: The game has two perspectives. In the above side-scrolling perspective you only have to worry about obstacles that make you jump or slide, which is done by swiping up or down on your screen.

PITFALL!

  • Behind View: Here is where you will play the majority of the game. In this view, there are a handful of different variables that you will have to deal with to stay alive.
  • Progress Bar: On the left side of the left side of the above screenshot shows your progress along the path.  The padlock represents a checkpoint that has yet to be unlocked and is at 2000M, while the hat represents where you are currently at.  Additionally, you have the meter counter above it to give you another indication.

PITFALL!

  • Enemies: Along the way you will come across enemies that you will have defeat.  Early on, you’ll fight snakes and scorpions, but the type doesn’t really matter—you still defeat them the same way.  When you see them coming up, simply tap the screen and kill ’em. Failure to do so will make you “poisioned”, and if you mess up on another enemy within a short period of time, you will die and your run will end.
  • Obstacles:  With this type of game, it is all about avoiding obstacles for as long as possible. You will have to either jump over fences, stones, or chasms, which is done by swiping up; side under rock formations or bridges, which is done by swiping down; making hard rights or lefts when a path turns, which is down by swiping right or left.

  • Power-Ups:  Along the way you will see large gold coins that if you hit with your character will earn you a jaguar power-up.  The jaguar will carry you through for a period of meters and you are immune to obstacles and enemies.  Once the jaguar has taken you as far as they can, you are given a small bit of immunity from any impending obstacles while you get your bearings back.

PITFALL!

  • Jaguar Token Upgrade: In the store for the above price you can upgrade (up to three times) your jaguar token, which increases the length of time you can spend riding the jaguar.
  • Life Tonic: You can also purchase life tonics, which allow you to eat it once during the game and come back with an extra life without losing progress.  This is a good way to make a great run excellent, so long as you can keep your nerve and dust off defeat immediately.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Look ahead: This is a game all about anticipation.  You have to look ahead and not focus on what is front of you, at least once the game is around 2000-3000M and beyond.  However, it is good practice to look ahead and not focus on the crystals in front of you until you’re used to all the special events (like trees falling to create new obstacles) that the game throws your way.
  • Tilting Phone: If you tilt your phone while in the behind-the-back perspective, you can control Harry from left to right.  If you want to throw caution to the wind and not worry about obstacles ahead of you, tilting your phone to get crystals that are to the left and right is a great way to stock up for the upgrades that are available for purchase in the store.
