Mr Jump World is the viciously tough new platformer in the incredibly challenging franchise that’s almost certainly responsible for many a broken phone.

You play as the eponymous character in a minimal world full of obstacles to leap over, collectibles to, err, collect, and three stars to get for each level.

To help make your stay in Mr Jump World more bearable, we thought we’d put together a few tips and tricks from our time spent together in the game.

Mr Jump World Tips and Tricks:

  • Mr Jump World doesn’t care about you: The first thing you have to bear in mind when you play Mr Jump World is that it doesn’t care about you. It wants you to fail, over and over again. Heck, even Dark Souls isn’t this cruel to you. So bear that in mind: you’re supposed to struggle, have a horrible time, and occasionally succeed and feel really good about yourself. That’s the game.
  • Don’t jump any more than you need to: You can tap and hold on the screen to jump varying different heights, but don’t get in the habit of always jumping the maximum height. Jumps require all sorts of different heights, from the teeniest of hops to the largest of leaps. Keep your eyes open and your mind alert.
  • Trial and error is key: Remember when we said that Mr Jump World wants you to fail? That’s where trial and error comes into play. Don’t expect to waltz through each level getting 100% on your first run through. You’re going to need to master each level – to learn exactly what you have to do to get 100%. That’s where trial and error comes in.
  • You can jump to a platform above from beneath it: We got stumped by this a few times but you can leap to a platform right above you to land on it without bumping your head. Yes, we get that’s a standard platforming trick but this is no standard platformer now, is it?
  • You don’t have to collect everything: Collecting all of the coins in a level nets you three stars, which you can use to unlock stuff, but you don’t have to collect everything. Collecting a bunch of things will get you two stars, which is just about enough. We recommend just going through the game collecting as much as you can and going back to master previous levels later. You’ll be better at the game then so it should be easier.
  • Pay attention for new mechanics: Each time you enter a new world, you’ll meet a new mechanic like the ability to double jump or use a jetpack. Pay attention to the handy pop-ups as they’ll detail how these handy things work.
  • Unlock World B when you get 50 stars: World B is like a b-sides collection that includes a bunch of more creative levels. We often reached for this world when world A became too frustrating. It’s a nice change of pace.
  • Never feel safe: As you progress through the world, you might occasionally feel lulled into a false sense of security. Mr Jump World likes to throw easy sections right at the end of the level, for example, before asking you to pull off an insane leap out of nowhere. Never feel comfortable, and always expect something to go wrong. That way you’ll be fine.
  • Prepare to watch a lot of ads: Each few failures will greet you with an ad, which is incredibly irritating as it breaks up your flow. You can purchase the ad-free experience for just a few bucks though, so if you’re the sort that gets angry easily but must play this, it might actually save you the price of a new phone.
  • Don’t throw your phone out of pure rage: This brings us nicely onto our last point: don’t throw your phone when you get angry. It’s just not worth it. If you really must do something, uninstall the game, go for a walk, or make a lovely cup of tea. Breaking your phone is very expensive.
