Into The Badlands Champions is quite an awkward title, and – at least at first – it seems quite an awkward game to play.

And arena based battler which requires you to tap, swipe, and flick your way through a variety of bad guys, Into The Badlands Champions takes a little while to get used to.

It’s arguably worth making the effort though, as this is a game that has a bit more going on in it than you might expect. You can take a range of territories, there’s a large roster to characters to unlock, and an even larger set of enemies to face.

To see all this you’ll need to follow some basic rules and tips though, and we’ve helpfully outlined these for you below…

  • Double tap The most important thing you’ll learn in combat early on is to double tap on an enemy when they’re down or immobile. Don’t hesitate to do this as soon as the opportunity arises – otherwise they’ll recover, get to their feet, and possibly land a critical blow on you.
  • Keep your enemies closer In relation to the above, make sure you’re close enough to your enemies to actually be able to make a finishing blow – you may want to keep a load of lesser foes close to you so it’s easier to batter and finish them all off.
  • Tap to win Moving is not straightforward in Into The Badlands Champions – in fact moving in a straight line is near impossible. If you find yourself in a bad position just tap to jump around though, and eventually you can to where you want to be.
  • Character select Choosing the right character is easy enough thanks to the introduction screen, where simply rifling through your squad tells you in a simple number form how strong each member will be in the upcoming scuffles.
  • You’re so special Remember you have a special attack. It takes a while to charge up and is easy to forget about, but is often essential in the tougher battles – especially as to actually interrupts your enemies’s attacks, regardless of what they’re about to throw at you.
  • Tap tap tap There’s a temptation to keep tapping when your character is whaling on a foe – but resist that temptation. Tapping just once is enough to have you unleash a swathe of attacks without your having to do anything else.
  • Plan ahead With the above in mind make sure you’re thinking about what you’re going to do next as your character is attacking – keep an eye out to where other enemies are and how soon you need to block their inevitable attack.
  • Animated battles Often you’ll find there’s a little lag in the animation for your character on certain moves, such as the finishers. So make sure you take that into account when planning your next move – as you can’t exit a finisher animation once it has begun.
  • Red spells danger When facing bigger foes they have hugely powerful attacks, but the range of these is fortunately marked out via red zones. You should obviously stay out of these at all costs, although some require more taps and swipes to get out of than others.
  • Quest time Keep an eye out for the Quest screen from the main menu to see what new adventures are open to you, as these can be useful in gaining more gems and coins – which can then be used to boost the abilities of your squad.
