Hyperball is an attempt to bring Rocket League to mobile. It’s not an incredibly successful attempt but it’s the closest we’ll get right now to living the dream of playing this brand of football on our phones.

Most of the challenge in Hyperball actually stems from the game’s poor controls. The dreadful AI isn’t going to pose any threat to your goal – unless it’s your teammates rolling it into the net themselves for some bizarre reason.

However, once you get used to Hyperball, its charms do begin to shine through. We found a good few reliable strategies that worked almost every single time – and you’ll need these, as each match is only about 30 seconds long so scoring quickly is the name of the game.

Read on below for a few tips, cheats, and strategies that will help you dominate in this shoddy rip-off of Rocket League.

Hyperball Tips and Tricks:

  • Don’t shoot directly at your opponent’s goal: Here’s where Hyperball directly differs from Rocket League – it’s actually more advisable to shoot towards your own goal than your opponent’s. Why? Because you’re more likely to hit the bar and have the ball rocket backwards into your own goal is you try and score directly into the opponent’s goal.
  • Shoot off the wall or at an angle: If it’s impossible to shoot backwards, hit the ball off the wall or at an angle instead to blunt your shot. The ball, thankfully, does adhere to the laws of physics so it should be pretty obvious at which angle you have to hit it to score.
  • You can just drive the ball into the net: An even safer option might be to just drive the ball into the net, perhaps shooting only when directly in front of goal for dramatic purposes.
  • Prevention is the best defence: Don’t let your opponent get the ball anywhere near your goal. Not only is it nearly impossible to defend on the goal line but your AI teammates are more likely to knock it in themselves than actually defend. Instead, hit the ball off the wall whenever it looks like going anywhere near your goal.
  • Play defensively: When you progress to the point where you have teammates, let them chase after the ball and (maybe) score. You’re best off playing a defensive role, and sitting back waiting for an opportunity. Chances are, your teammates or the AI will put the ball into the other net, so preventing it going into yours is a sound strategy.
  • Your car doesn’t matter: Cars are purely visuals – just like in Rocket League. So basically it doesn’t matter which one you pick. Go with the one you like the most.
  • Flick your thumb to turn sharply: The controls are pretty naff and really difficult to get your head around at first – particularly if you play on a larger device. One nifty trick we found though, was that you can flick your thumb to do a super sharp turn at any moment. That can really help you get out of trouble.
  • Knock cars out of the way: If you can’t get to the ball in time, you can actually knock cars out of the way by nudging them or using the shoot mechanic to knock them miles away. It’s surprisingly effective.
