There’s nothing more frustrating than running out of energy when enjoying a free-to-play mobile game, and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery can be more confounding than any charm or spell in that regard. One moment you’re enjoying everything the RPG has to offer and cruising through parts of a chapter, and next minute, bam, you’re stuck with no energy and with no choice but to pay for more or wait for it to refill at the rate of one point for every several minutes.

Alas, there’s no true way around this, as Hogwarts Mystery is designed to monetized in this fashion. There’s no way to pay to win, but the energy system is more or less set up to capitalize on mobile gamers’ impatience.

Buying more energy is certainly an option, as you can hit the in-game store and buy energy for Gems at any time, starting with 10 units of energy for 20 Gems. However, we’d rather cast a Lumos spell on how you can get more energy for free in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, because that’s much more fun.

Complete one whole lesson or encounter that uses energy

This is the big one. Every time you tackle a lesson, you’ll need to use energy to complete certain tasks that earn you stars before the lesson’s time limit expires. This is true of some non-lesson encounters as well.

Once you finish the entire lesson or encounter — that is, once you’ve earned enough stars to pass it and move on — you’ll get a complete energy refill. You can use this to your advantage when you are close to finishing one but run out of energy. Wait just long enough to have enough energy to knock out that final star, and when you do, you’ll have a full magical tank to continue playing.

Finish certain tasks within a lesson or encounter

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

As you’ll quickly learn once you start playing Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, finishing a lesson or encounter means tapping on any person or object with a glowing blue outline. That, in turn, will give you a task to complete simply by tapping it on it a certain number of times, using one point of energy for each tap.

Finishing one of these tasks will earn you rewards that include XP for your student, coins and occasionally a point or two of energy, though you won’t know until you actually finish the task if that’s the case.

Bonus tip: If you have multiple tasks to choose from, tap on them once just to see how much energy they cost to complete and then tap somewhere else, like on the blank ground, so you won’t commit to that task. Checking all of them to see which one can be completed quickest can help you conserve your energy, and if you get lucky and the rewards work out in your favor, you can possibly cruise through the whole deal more efficiently.

Choose energy as your star reward

Every time you earn a star during a lesson or encounter, you’ll be able to pick from three different rewards. Most often, these are XP to increase a specific stat for your character, but the selection sometimes includes coins, energy and even Gems.

It goes without saying that with energy as precious as it is in Hogwarts Mystery, you should go with that unless it’s the final star of a lesson, in which case you’re getting a full energy refill anyway. Gems are a good second choice when available so you can start stockpiling in case you want to buy some energy down the road.
