Check out our tips and tricks for Hot Dish, including general tips and a walkthrough for the final two levels.

GENERAL TIPS

  • At the beginning of each level, you will be asked to select which dishes you want to prepare. It is important to buy new recipes as often as you can afford it in order to get a higher rating. The critics will not award your dishes higher stars if you keep the same thing on the menu all the time.
  • As the levels get higher it’s important to add more complicated dishes (ones that require several steps to make) in order to pass the levels since they will be essential in beating the game. More complicated dishes will earn you better reviews from the critics.
  • This game is all about timing. You have to calculate how long it takes to prepare each dish and try and prepare all your dishes so that they are all completed at the same time. If you let a dish sit around while you’re preparing other ones, it will gradually start losing flavor, thus losing stars in the process.
  • Performing actions at the right time will increase the quality of your dish. Impulse might make you stop green indicators as soon as they start flashing but that would be a mistake. To get the best score you must stop the indicator in the middle of the green area, not when it starts flashing. That could be the one factor keeping you from achieving a perfect dish.
  • The stars you earn in each level will allow you to buy additional recipes for the menu. You can tell how many stars you can spend by looking at the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Once you’ve finished making a dish you will receive a rating between 1 to 5 stars. There is a difference between dishes that receive a 5 star rating and a “Perfect Dish”. A dish that is rated with 5 stars WILL lose flavor over time as you wait for everything else to be finished.
  • “Perfect Dishes” have 5 stars at the bottom and a large gold star in the middle of the dish, these are the ones that DO NOT lose stars once completed .These are dishes that had NO mistakes during preparation.
  • You will be able to see stars fading away as a dish is sitting for too long. If the star on a completed dish has not faded away completely, it WILL still count towards your final score.
  • As you learn to make new dishes, memorize which step is the last one, last steps vary depending on which dish you’re using. In some instances it could be baking, stuffing or layering. Knowing the last step and approximately how long they take to finish is very important since you want to have all the dishes ready at the same time.
  • Once they’re completed, begin clicking the final step of each dish at about a few seconds apart. Clicking dishes a few seconds apart will give you time to go back and forth between dishes without them overlapping too much, thus finishing all of them at about the same time.
  • There are times when you will have to mix food by way of stirring with a spoon. It can be difficult at times to grasp the spoon and make it turn the way you want it to. The best way to do it is by placing your cursor over the large grey shadowy symbol in the middle of the dish. Move the cursor in same counter-clockwise pattern as the diagram shows (Do NOT click on the small animated green arrow at the bottom).
  • If you’re on the last set of a certain meal, like the desserts for example, and you know you are not going to make your goal, just exit out of the game. Once you return to the game it will put you at the beginning of the level where you can choose your menu selections and start over. This will save you from having to finish a round that you know you cannot beat.
  • There may be times at the beginning of certain restaurants in which you have not earned enough money to buy additional recipes. If this happens you will be forced to play a level without filling all the requirements. If you do not choose all the meals you are supposed to in the kitchen prep screen you can still continue with a level but you run the risk of not having enough dishes to reach your goal.
  • Even if you lose a round, you get to keep the points you just earned in the failed level. These points will count towards the next round.
  • Try to make several things at the same time. While something is baking you can chop several things in between. When choosing which meals to prepare try to pick things that have similar prep and cook time so that you don’t get thrown off by things that have too many extra steps. When you do more than one thing, don’t forget to keep an eye on the other meals in progress.
  • Dishes that have too many arrows or commands close together should be done by themselves as much as possible since the commands come rather quickly. This will allow you to make your meals with as much perfection as possible. This way you avoid not getting to a dish in time for a command.
  • You can sometimes stop a dish before it finishes cooking and it will still give you 5 stars. This mostly happens with appetizers or when you are baking. Let’s suppose that your other two dishes are finished, just click on the last thing that is baking and it completes the dish automatically before it reaches the green meter. This is a risk you take when you do this, sometimes you will get 5 stars, if you’ve done a good job. If you did a so-so job, you will get a lower score, it’s all about timing.
  • Try to accumulate as many power-ups as you can and save them for the last few rounds in the french restaurant. The last 2 level are the hardest since you almost have to earn 5 stars on the majority of your dishes to pass those levels. I was able to complete them without power-ups but every bit helps.
  • You get awards for doing all sorts of things, like buying a lot of recipes, getting a certain amount of perfect dishes, completing all restaurants etc. When you look at the trophy room the game is not very clear about what the awards are for. The only time you get a clear explanation of what you’ve won is when it appears in the top right corner of the screen at the end of a level.
  • Whatever star points you’ve achieved at the end of a level will automatically rollover to the next restaurant or level.
  • MINI-GAME: KITCHEN CLEANUP

There are 3 power-ups that you can earn throughout the game, and the only way to earn one is by passing the “Kitchen Cleanup” mini game, which will appear every few levels. Here are some tips for the mini game.

  • Reach goal before the timer runs out.
  • Swap tiles to make matches of 3 or more to clear them from the board.
  • Keep insects and rodents out of the highlighted area or you will be fined a violation.
  • Get three fines and the game is over.
  • You get more points for matching and eliminating rodents and bugs than you do for cleaning items.
  • Each rodent or bug will earn you 200 points each, while matching cleaning supplies will only give you 100 points for each one.
  • Make sure that you watch the pests so that they don’t fall into the highlighted area while you make a match below.
  • The progress meter above will let you know how close you are to finishing the level, while the timer on the left will let you know how much time you have left.
  • If the highlighted area is only on one side, make as many matches as possible on the opposite side of the board. It will help you avoid pests falling into the highlighted area.
  • If you calculate it correctly you can make sure that the pests falls below the highlighted area.
  • The pests CAN pass through the highlighted area, they just CAN’T land directly on it.
  • If you run out of moves the board will reshuffle itself. When the board reshuffles itself it can sometimes cost you the game because you have no control of where the pests fall.
  • POWER-UPS

Here are the power-ups you can earn after you’ve successfully completed a mini game. If you decide that you don’t want to use a power-up simply click it back on its spot and you can use it a later time.

  • Spatula will put the game into slow motion, allowing you to work faster.
  • Secret Spices will improve the quality of an activity.
  • Chef-O-Matic (blender) will complete an activity perfectly. Use this at the last stage of a dish for it to be effective.
  • TIPS FOR BEATING LEVEL 44 AND 45 OF THE FRENCH RESTAURANT

    Level 44 – Chez Velours

If you’re having a hard time beating level 44 of the French Restaurant, here are my menu choices. You have to earn 40 stars to beat this level.

  • I deliberately did not choose items that required too much action with the spoon since it would sometimes throw off my timing.
  • For appetizers I chose: Asparagus Souffle/Crab Stuffed Avocado and Salmon Mousse
  • For entrees I chose: Frog Legs/Braised Fungus and Duck ala Orange (make sure to calculate the cooking time correctly for the frog legs since it takes less time to make than the other 2 entrees)
  • For desserts I chose: Blackberry Cheesecake/Cranberry Calfouti and Raspberry Meringues (all 3 desserts required baking so make sure you start baking each dish with just a few seconds in between)
  • Level 45 – Chez Velours

This is the very last level. You need to earn 42 stars to pass it.

  • Make sure you finish each appetizer, entrees and desserts with at least 14 stars to win.
  • You don’t need these selections to beat this level, I am just giving an example of what I chose in order to do it. Make the recipes you are most comfortable with.
  • For appetizers I chose: Asparagus Souffle/Crab Stuffed Avocado and Salmon Mousse.
  • For entrees I chose: Alouettes Sans Tetes/Salmon Roulade and Almond Oysters
  • For desserts I chose: Blackberry Cheesecake/Cranberry Calfouti and Raspberry Meringues (all 3 desserts required baking so make sure you start baking each dish with just a few seconds in between)
