Welcome to the Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward walkthrough on Gamezebo. Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward is a hidden object/adventure game created by Specialbit Studios. This walkthrough includes tips and tricks, helpful hints, and a strategy guide on how to complete Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward.

How to use this walkthrough

  • This walkthrough is a guide to assist in solving mini-puzzles and acquiring all items in order to complete the game. You may explore locations in the order you wish, this walkthrough is written to take the most direct route to the game’s finish.
  • Inventory objects will be written in bold. The walkthrough will state, “Use the inventory item on the blah blah,” because it assumes you have the item. If you don’t have the item, on your keyboard, press CTRL+F (at the same time). In the text box, type the name of the item you are looking for and press ENTER. This will scan this page for the appearance of that word.
  • Play the tutorial! It will explain gameplay elements. The tutorial is available in Casual mode only.
  • Often you need to perform an action (i.e., place or collect an inventory item) in order for the game to progress. Before assuming the game has a glitch, go through your inventory and see if you can place any of your items anywhere or look for an item to pick up, switch to flip, etc.

Gameplay and tips

  • This is a hidden object adventure game. You will move from location to location solving hidden object hunts, mini-puzzles and picking up items to use in order to proceed in the game.
  • Achievements can be found from the main menu screen. Click on Achievements to see the achievements you can earn. Most of the achievements are earned simply by advancing through the game. Achievements you can earn are solving every puzzle and not using hints, not using hints in the hidden object hunts and finding all of Spillet’s notes.
  • The Menu button at the top left of the screen gives access to the options screen and can bring you back to the main menu.
  • There are two difficulty settings. You cannot switch settings midgame.
  • In Casual mode, sparkles indicate areas of interest and the Hint and Skip meters fill quicker. Casual mode has a tutorial.
  • In Expert mode, there are no sparkles and the Hint and Skip meters take longer to fill. Expert mode does not have a tutorial.
  • Move your cursor over every aspect of a scene and watch for it to change, it’s the only way to find everything, especially if playing in Expert mode.
  • Items collected throughout the game go into your inventory, located at the bottom of your screen.
  • When an inventory item has a [+] plus sign beside it, it needs to be combined with another inventory item (that also must have a [+] plus sign beside it). To combine items, click on an inventory item, then click on another inventory item. If they belong together, they will be combined. If not, they will return to the inventory.
  • Hidden object scenes provide a list of items to find. When you have found everything from the list, an item will be added to your inventory. In this walkthrough, the inventory item will be indicated by a yellow highlight and all the other items to find will be indicated by white highlights.
  • All notes, letters, scrolls, etc. collected can be found in Info, located in the top right hand corner of the screen. These items will be indicated by green highlights.
  • Your tasks are located at the bottom left hand of the screen.
  • Closing a window – To close the zoom-in windows, click Close. Tip: If you can zoom in on the area again, you likely haven’t found everything you needed to find.
  • Mini-puzzles can be skipped once the Skip button fills. The Skip button is located at the bottom right of the puzzle window.
  • Use the Back button to leave a mini-puzzle. Note this will reset a puzzle.
  • Hints are available in the bottom right of the screen.
  • Hints used in the hidden object scenes highlight an item.
  • Hints used during the adventure mode tell you what to do or where to go.

Day One

  • From the main menu, click Play. Select your difficulty setting. Watch the cutcene. If you are playing in Casual mode, click Yes to play the tutorial.

  • Find all the objects. Once you have found all the items, a metal cross is added to your inventory.
  • Move right to the patio.

  • Click on the bush at the bottom of the scene. Take the stones.
  • Click on the window.

  • Knock the birdcage down, then click on it. Take the hook.
  • Move down, then go forward through the gates to the swing.

  • Click on the right lamppost to start a hidden object hunt.

  • Find all the objects. Once you have found all the items, fishing line is added to your inventory.
  • Click on the area under the tire swing. Take the pole spikes.
  • Click on the gate. Add the metal cross. A mini-puzzle starts. This is a Tower of Hanoi puzzle.

  • Move the stacked crosses so they are all on the far right peg (C). A cross can only be placed on another cross that is larger than it. To move a cross, click on it and drag it to another peg. The following instructions is one possible solution to the puzzle. Reset the puzzle (click on the Back button to leave the puzzle, then go back into the puzzle) and using the screenshot above as a guide, move the crosses in the following order: A – C – A – B – C – B – A – C – B – A – B – C – A – C – A – B – C – B – C – A – B – A – C – B – A – C – A – B – C – B – A – C – B – A – B – C – A – C – B – A – C – B – C – A – B – A – B – C – A – C – A – B – C – B – A – C – B – A – B – C – A – C.
  • Go through the gate to the ferry.

  • Click on the crow. Move down to the swing.

  • Throw the stones at the crow. Pick the key up from where it dropped. Go through the gate to the ferry.

  • Open the box with the key. Click on the open box. Take the pliers and insulating tape.
  • Click on the plaque. Read the inscription. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Return to the courtyard (move down two scenes, then go left).
  • Watch the cutscene.
  • Go left to the electrical pole.

  • From your inventory, combine the pliers with the insulating tape to get the insulated pliers.
  • Put the pole spikes on the pole. Click on the box at the top of the pole. Open the panel and use the insulated pliers on the open box. A mini-puzzle starts. Reconnect the wires. Start by clicking on a coloured wire at the top of the scene. From the bottom of the scene, find the same coloured wire. Trace its path through the tangled wires until you reach the end of the wire, then click on it to connect the two. If they do not connect, click on the top wire again, then on the wire end. If they still do not connect, they are the incorrect wires.
  • Solution:

  • If the last wire to connect is the blue one and you are having a hard time selecting it, note when your cursor is over a top coloured wire, it slightly illuminates. Move your cursor slowly to the left until the blue wire illuminates (it’s subtle).
  • Once you are finished, click on the woodpile at the left of the scene.

  • Read Charles’ letter. Click anywhere outside the window to close it. You can click on Info to view the letter. Note Charles’ pocket watch.
  • Take the boards. Click on the stump and take the firewood.
  • Go to the generator (move down, then go right to the courtyard, then right again, forward two scenes to the ferry, then go right to the generator).

  • Put the boards in the water. Click on the end of the boards and take the seltzer bottle with water.
  • Click on the barrel to start a hidden object hunt.

  • Find all the objects. Once you have found all the items, a sledgehammer is added to your inventory.
  • Return to the courtyard (move down three scenes, then go left), then move forward to the entrance of the hotel.

  • Use the sledgehammer to remove the boards (five clicks, it doesn’t matter where).
  • Enter the lobby.

  • Click on the left wall. Turn on the light switch (you need to have completed the electrical pole puzzle; if you haven’t, look up a few steps in this walkthrough to see what you need to do).
  • Click on the safe on the right wall. A mini-puzzle starts.
  • Move the lock to the top of the column by clicking on the left and right arrows in the correct sequence. Start by clicking on the left button and note how the lock moves upward. Click on the arrows to continue moving the lock upwards. A wrong move will return the lock to its starting point. To solve the puzzle, click left – right – left – left – right – left – left, then turn the handle.

  • Take the numbered tiles and the newspaper (when you are finished reading the newspaper, click anywhere outside the window to close it).
  • Move down, then go up the stairs and go left into the hallway.

  • Click on the door closest to you. Add the numbered tiles. A mini-puzzle starts. Rearrange the tiles so the rows and columns all equal 34.

  • Click on the axe above the fireplace. Take the axe.
  • Click on the fireplace. Take the poker. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.

  • Return to the generator (move down five scenes to the courtyard, then go right, then forward two scenes, then go right).

  • From your inventory, combine the poker with the fishing line then with the hook to get the fishing rod.
  • Use the fishing rod on the water to get the ferry wheel.
  • Move down to the ferry.

  • Add the ferry wheel to the ferry, then cut the rope with the axe.
  • A mini-puzzle starts. Drive the ferry. When the rectangle appears in the green zone, click on the wheel. Do this six times in a row. Making a mistake will cause you to move backwards.
  • When you are finished, watch the cutscene.

  • Move right up the path to the crypt entrance. Enter the crypt.

  • Take the flint from the bench. Use the flint on the torch beside the door, then take the torch.
  • Read Spillet’s diary entry. Click anywhere outside the window to close it. Click on casket #7. Take the hatch ring.
  • Click on the floor. Click on the floor to reveal the hatch hook. Add the hatch ring. Use the torch on the opening of the basement to enter the crypt basement.

  • Take the bowl and the rope fence. Click on the hand and read the note. Click anywhere outside the window to close it. Remove the sheet, then click on Charles. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Move down to the crypt.

  • Click on the top left window. Add the rope fence. Climb through the window to the crypt entrance.

  • Move down to the ferry dock.

  • Go right to the crypt entrance.

  • Place the board on the overgrown grass beside the crypt. Go forward to the boat.

  • Click on the bottom of the tree. Use the pocket knife to scrape off some moss.
  • Click on the boat. Use the bowl to remove the water, then add the moss, then the wooden sign. Take the boat to the ferry.
  • Move down two scenes to the patio, then click on the window.

  • Click on the vines below the window. Chase the snake away with the seltzer bottle with water.
  • Click on the window. Open the shutters and use the pocket knife to open the window. Climb through the window to enter the kitchen.

  • Click on the lower cupboard and take the candle stump.
  • Click on the top cupboard. Take the candle stump. Open the cupboard door and take the spirit.
  • Click on the hanging utensils and take the candle stump.
  • Click on the broken shelves. Take the candle stump and boric acid.
  • Click on the hutch. Take the candle stump and matches. Open the drawer and take the candlewick and candle stump.
  • Click on the table.

  • Click on the instructions at the bottom right of the table.
  • Take the pan.
  • To the bowl, add the boric acid and the candlewick. Cut the wick using the pocket knife, then take the three pieces of candlewick.
  • Add the spirit to the burner, then put the pan on the burner. Put the six candle stumps in the pan, then light the burner with the matches. Take the pan with wax.
  • Put a piece of candlewick in the mold, then pour the pan with wax into the mold. Remove the candle. Do this two more times. Take the three candles.
  • Add the three candles to the candelabra. Light the candles with the matches. The candelabra is added to your inventory.
  • Open the door and enter the lobby.
  • Go up the stairs and take the left hallway. Enter Curwen’s room (first door on the right).

  • Click on the fireplace. Add the firewood and newspaper to the fireplace, then light the fire with the candelabra.
  • Watch the cutscene.

Day Two

  • Click on the window. After the tree crashes through the window, read Spillet’s note. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Click on the desk. Read the instructions. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Return to the courtyard (move down four scenes).

  • Go left to the electrical pole.

  • After the electrical pole crashes through the gates, go into the shed.

  • Click under the table and take the sprayer and insect spray.
  • Click on the toolbox and take the hammer and the metal pin.
  • Click on the wall shelves and take the rusty shears and saw handle.
  • Click on the wall shelves at the right to start a hidden object hunt.

  • Find all the objects. Once you have found all the items, coins are added to your inventory.
  • Return to the patio (move down, then go right two scenes).

  • Click on the bike. Use the gloves to take the chain.
  • Return to the generator (move forward two scenes, then go right).

  • Click on the generator and add the chain. From your inventory, add the saw and the saw handle to get the saw. Use the saw to cut the log blocking the large wheel.
  • Click on the generator again and press the red button at the top right corner.
  • Return to the hotel (move down three scenes, then go left, enter the lobby and go up the stairs, then go left into the hallway).

  • Click on the wall lamp. Take the puzzle piece.
  • Click on the far door on the right. Add the coins. A mini-puzzle starts. Switch the positions of the gold and silver coins. Gold coins can only move right and silver coins can only move left. Coins can only move into empty spots. A coin can jump over an opposite coin into the next empty space. Click on the Reset button to reset the puzzle if there are no available moves left.

  • Click on the desk. Read the notice from the tower. Click anywhere outside the window to close it. Use the pocket knife to open the package. Take the UV bulb.
  • Click on the stairs (on the right). Open the latch.
  • From the upstairs right hallway, move down to the stairs, then go left into the hallway, then enter the study.

  • Click on the lamp. Add the red bulb. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Click on the desk. Add the trays. Add the developer to the left tray and the fixer to the right tray. Put the film in the left tray, then take the half-developed film. Take the half-developed film and add it to the right tray.
  • Take the developed film, then add it to the viewer.
  • Click on the picture to take note of it. Click anywhere outside the picture to close it.

  • Click on the lamp. Add the UV bulb. Click on the symbols on the floor. Use the hammer to remove the floorboard. Take the key.
  • Move down and enter the study.

  • Click on the desk drawer. Use the key to unlock the drawer. Take the corked bottle.
  • From your inventory, combine the corkscrew with the corked bottle to get the cork.
  • Again from your inventory, combine the needle with the magnet to make the magnetized needle. Now combine the magnetized needle with the cork to get the cork with magnetized needle.
  • Click on the desk.

  • Put the bowl with water on the indent on the desk. Add the cork with magnetized needle. Take the compass.
  • Go to the kitchen (move down three scenes, then go through the door on the right to the kitchen).

  • Click on the sink to start a hidden object hunt.
  • Find all the objects. Once you have found all the items, a corkscrew is added to your inventory.
  • Return to the swing (go back into the lobby and move down to the courtyard, the go right to the patio, then forward to the swing).

  • Click on the ground under the swing. Use the shovel to dig up the dirt, take the statuette.
  • Go left to the garden.

  • From your inventory, combine the oil and rusty shears to make the oiled shears. Use the oiled shears to cut away the vines. Click on the gate. Take Charles’ handkerchief, then place the statuette in the inset. Open the gates and enter the labyrinth.
  • A mini-puzzle starts. Navigate through the labyrinth. You can only move up and down, left and right. Click where you want to move and you will move in one direction until you have a choice to make.

  • Take the long branch. Use the long branchon the large stone to move it under the birdhouse. Click on the birdhouse. Read Spillet’s note. Click anywhere outside the window to close it. Take the lighter.
  • Click on the tree a little farther back. Take the green flower. Use the pocket knife to take some moss.
  • Go right to the bridge.

  • Click on the base of the tree. Take the pine needles. Click on the reeds to the left of the bridge. Use the pocket knife to take the reeds.
  • Move down to the forest.

  • Click on the fire pit. Add the moss, reeds and pine needles, then light it with the lighter. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Go right to the bridge, then cross the bridge to the swamp house entrace.

  • Click on the rock. Take the grass mill handle.
  • Click on the talisman frame. Take the talisman frame.
  • Click on the roots on the wall. Use the pocket knife to cut off a piece of root.
  • Move forward to the swamp house glade.

  • Click on the skeleton’s head. Take the key. Read the dog tags to note this is Spillet.
  • Click on the skeleton’s hand. Read Spillet’s note. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Click on the flowers. Take the red and purple flowers.
  • Move down and enter the swamp house.

  • Take the ash form.
  • Click on the book. Open the book and click on its pages. Read the Necronomicon. Click anywhere outside the window to close it.
  • Click on the briefcase. Unlock it with the key. Take the phone handle. Read the instructions.
  • Click on the table. Add the grass mill handle. Put the red and purple flowers and green flower in the mill, then turn the handle. Take the flower juice.
  • Click on the ritual stone above the oven. If necessary, read the instructions.
  • Add the flower juice to the ritual stone. A mini-puzzle starts. Retrace the symbols using your mouse. Watch the symbol get drawn. When it disappears, use the flashing area as a starting point, click and hold your mouse and recreate the symbol. If you are successful, you will then retrace the next symbol. You will have to keep tracing the symbol until you get it correct.
  • Click on the ritual stone again.

  • Add the talisman frame and then the Charles’ handkerchief. Use the pocket knife to cut a small handkerchief.
  • Move down three scenes to the forest.

  • From your inventory, combine the ash form and root and small handkerchief to make the skull with root and handkerchief.
  • Click on the fire. Add the skull with root and handkerchief. Take the ash.
  • Return to the swamp house.

  • Click on the ritual stone. Add the ash. Take the talisman. Leave and move forward to the swamp house glade.

  • Use the talisman on the shadow. Move forward.
  • Use the compass to follow the map. The compass is in the top right corner. The blue needle points north. Use the compass to move north, then west, then north, then northeast. If you take a wrong turn, the game will reset you.
  • To make things simple, first move right, then left, then forward, then right.

  • Click on the middle portion of the fence. Use the branch to pull the toolbox closer. Take the crowbar.
  • Click on the left portion of the fence. Pry it open with the crowbar, then go through the fence to the courtyard.

Day Three

  • Return to the shed (move all the way down to the courtyard, then go left, then forward into the shed).
