Welcome to the Gamezebo Strategy Guide for Ghost Town Mysteries: Bodie. This is a hidden object Game which includes jigsaw puzzle and Find the Difference mini-games. You are the assistant to a reporter who is investigating a 100 year old murder and reports of ghosts in the town. The game is based on stories about a real ghost town, Bodie, California. The atmosphere is creepy and there are a lot of scary ghosts.

This walkthrough is divided into two parts:

General Tips (no spoilers)

Scene By Scene Walkthrough

General Tips

  • Although you receive a pocketwatch, there doesn’t seem to be any timer for the gameplay. It’s just part of the plot-you must complete your work by sundown, or be trapped in the town.
  • If you make too many wrong clicks in a row, the game will penalize you by freezing the scene in black and white for a brief period. Sometimes this makes it easier to spot objects, especially if it’s a scene where the lightning is poor.
  • Check each scene carefully for ghostly green dots. This means you need to click there.
  • The game is very inconsistent about how to place the keys in the locks to the houses. Sometimes you have to line up the key perfectly with the lock-sometimes you have to click slightly to one side or the other. Just try several places near the perfect alignment and you should get it. When the key is placed correctly, you will see a little movie of it turning in the lock.
  • You will need to click on the Map each time you finish inside a house to return to the town view. However, you can’t click on the Map until the Find List changes to the words "Use the Map to Proceed."
  • You must wait for each item to go into your keepsake chest before you can click on the next one. This is one reason it can seem so hard to find things-you may be clicking in the right place, but the previous item didn’t finish storing yet so it didn’t count.
  • Many objects are completely black that would not be black in real life, like a candlestick.
  • Objects are generally relevant to the scene, and usually in a location that makes sense, but may be the wrong size compared to real life.
  • Some people find that turning up the brightness on their monitor helps-others find it doesn’t. It may just depend on the type of monitor you have.
  • The Find the Differences mini-games are very difficult and there are no hints available for these. You may need to check the spoiler section of our walkthrough.
  • Each ghost’s story is divided into two parts: the house (from the time you click on the house until collect the sack of gravestone pieces and return to the town view) and the cemetery (from the time you click on the gravestone until you collect the key and return to the town view). You can only save at the end of these parts, which the game calls levels. So if a house has a hidden object scene, a find the differences scene, then find the sack, then go back to the map, and you exit the game after the Find the Differences scene without picking up the sack you will have to start all over again with the Hidden Object scene for that house.
  • Similarly if you exit the cemetery after putting together the jigsaw puzzle but before picking up the key, you’ll have to do the jigsaw puzzle all over again when you return.

General Tips for the Ingame Hint System

  • The game is very stingy with hints, giving you just two for each scene. However, if you use up your hints and then wait two minutes, you will get a new hint.
  • You can also earn new hints (for a maximum of 2 total) before entering a new location by catching flies. Each time before you enter a house, if you currently have no hints, there will be 6 flies on the outside of the house. Each 3 you catch earns you a hint. If you already have 1 hint, there will be 3 flies to catch. If you already have 2 hints, there will be zero flies.
  • However, the flies are quite hard to see themselves. Here is an example, so you know what you’re looking for.
  • You will only get the "All the Flies have Been Found" message if there were flies to find. If you had 2 hints to begin with, all you’ll see is the house, no message.
  • Even when you do have hints, they’re not always helpful.
  • The idea is supposed to be that the spider climbs out of the hint bowl and goes and tries to pick up an object from the Find List.
  • However, I found that sometimes the spider was right on top of the object and sometimes it was as much as an inch above it. In one case, a bow tie, the object was above the spider.
  • And even when you can see where the spider is, you may not recognize the object.
  • So if you do use a hint, just assume that the object is somewhere up or down within about an inch of where the spider was. You may still have to resort to random clicking to find it.
  • Hints can only be used for the Hidden Object scenes. There are no hints for the jigsaw puzzles or Find the Differences scenes.

General Tips for the Jigsaw Puzzle Mini-games

  • The jigsaw mini-games become progressively harder as the game goes along and, I am sad to say, are not drawn well. Quite often a piece will "fit" in a location where it is clearly the wrong shape.
  • The best way to do the puzzles is to grab a piece from the inventory tray and try to match it based on color and texture, then click to see if it’s in the right place. It involves a lot of trial and error because of the fit problem mentioned.
  • Pieces do tend to cluster, just like they would in real life if you hadn’t mixed them up before starting the puzzle. So it’s pretty common that you place a piece and then the next one in that inventory slot goes right next to it for 2 or 3 pieces in a row. This helps a lot.
  • You can rotate jigsaw pieces by left-clicking once. Each click rotates it 90 degrees. If you’ve been clicking to rotate, move your cursor to another spot before trying to pick it up.

General Tips for the Find the Differences Mini-games

  • These are very hard, and there are no hints available.
  • Carefully check hairlines, collars, sleeve lengths, belts, and hands. These will give you about half the differences in most scenes.
  • There is usually one difference in the background of the scene as well, although not always.
  • If a few cases where there is a print, what looks like several differences may only count as one.
  • When you click on a difference (in either picture), the pictures will change so they are now the same in that area.
  • The counter in the Find List area tells you how many differences you have left to find.
