There are loads of characters to collect in Genshin Impact, as you’d imagine from a gacha game. Unsurprisingly though, some of them are better than others. That’s why we’ve written this list – it breaks down the characters and shows you which ones you should be trying to get.

There are different tiers of character, different elements and different roles, all of which you’ll find outlined below. The characters aren’t listed in any particular order within their tiers, so don’t shout at us if you think we’re saying someone’s better than someone else.

S Tier

These characters are the best of the best. Do everything in your power to get them. Seriously.

Diluc

  • Element – Pyro
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Searing Assault” – A powerful dash forward that deals Pyro damage.
  • Elemental Burst – “Dawn” – A knock-back attack deals Pyro damage, that then unleashes a Phoenix that delivers more Pyro damage to any enemy it comes into contact with, before exploding and creating an AoE Pyro attack. Diluc’s Normal and Charged attacks deal Pyro damage for a short time after.

Fischl

  • Element – Electro
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Nightrider” – Summons Oz, Fischl’s raven companion to deal AoE Electro damage at a specific spot. Oz hangs around for the duration of the skill to deal more damage.
  • Elemental Burst – “Midnight Phantasmagoria” – Fischl takes on Oz’s form, which increases her movement speed. She can also strike nearby enemies with lightning, dealing Electro damage. When the ability finishes, Oz will remain on the battlefield to attack Fischl’s foes.

QiQi

  • Element – Cryo
  • Role – Healer
  • Elemental Skill – “Adeptus Art: Herald of Frost” – QiQi summons the Herald of Frost and delivers Cryo damage to nearby enemies. The herald follows QiQi around for the duration of the skill, and all normal and charged attacks that she lands will regenerate health for party members.
  • Elemental Burst – “Adeptus Art: Preserver of Fortune” – QiQi marks nearby enemies with a talisman that deals Cryo damage. Any allied character that deals damage to enemies marked with the talisman regenerates HP.

Venti

  • Element – Anemo
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Skyward Sonnet” – Unleashes a wind funnel that catches nearby enemies, deals Anemo damage and hurls them into the air.
  • Elemental Burst – “Wind’s Grand Ode” – Venti unleashes a tornado of winds that sucks up everything in its path and deals massive Anemo damage.

A Tier

They’re good. Not the best of the best but you’re definitely going to be smiling if you pull one of them in a draw.

Barbara

  • Element – Hydro
  • Role – Healer
  • Elemental Skill – “Let The Show Begin” – Creates a Melody Loop that deals Hydro damage to any nearby enemies and affects them with the Wet status. The skill also buffs Barbara’s attacks to heal party members.
  • Elemental Burst – “Shining Miracle” – Heals all party members and allies for a massive amount of HP. That amount scales with Barbara’s own max HP.

Jean

  • Element – Anemo
  • Role – Healer
  • Elemental Skill – “Gale Blade” – Jean whips up a mighty wind that throws enemies around and deals large amounts of Anemo damage.
  • Elemental Burst – “Dandelion Breeze” – Creates a Dandelion Field that launches enemies and deals Anemo damage. The field continuously regenerates one ally and gives them the Anemo attribute and deals Anemo damage to any enemy that enters or exits it.

Keqing

  • Element – Electro
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Stellar Restoration” – Throws a Lightning Stiletto at an enemy, dealing a Electro damage over a small AoE and leave a mark. Unleashing another Stellar Restoration blinks Keqing to that mark to slash out a powerful AoE Electro attack. Releasing a Charged Attack while the mark persists she’ll unleash a number of cuts at the mark that deal AoE Electro damage.
  • Elemental Burst – “Starward Sword” – A massive AoE Electro attack, followed by a number of Electro-imbued slashes at nearby enemies and culminating with another huge AoE Electro attack.

Mona

  • Element – Hydro
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Reflection of Doom” – Creates a water-based phantom that taunts nearby enemies and focuses their fire. It also deals continuous Hydro damage and explodes at the end of the skill, performing an AoE Hydro attack.
  • Elemental Burst – “Stellaris Phantasm” – Creates an Illusory Bubble that affects all enemies in its AoE. As well as applying the Wet status and immobilizing weak enemies, this also buffs attacks to give them Hydro damage and increases all damage taken.

Razor

  • Element – Electro
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Claw and Thunder” – Press and Razor will deal Electro damage to nearby enemies and gain a sigil that increases his energy recharge rate. Hold and Razor unleashes his energy into a massive Electro AoE attack that clears the sigils.
  • Elemental Burst – “Lightning Fang” – Summons a wolf that attacks alongside Razor and deals huge amounts of Electro damage as well as offering other buffs and boosts.

Xiangling

  • Element – Pyro
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Guoba Attack” – Summons a panda that breathes fire on any enemies close by.
  • Elemental Burst – “Pyronado” – Summons a swirling fire tornado that deals Pyro damage and moves with Xiangling.

Xiao

  • Element – Anemo
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Lemniscatic Wind Cycling” – Xiao lunges forward and deals Anemo damage to anyone who gets in the way.
  • Elemental Burst – “Bane of All Evil” – Xiao becomes a demon. This increases his attack range and damage and converts all of his damage to Anemo. It also lets him jump higher, but maintaining the form will drain his HP.

B Tier

Bread-and-butter fighters. They’re neither above or below average, but they’ll serve you well.

Bennett

  • Element – Pyro
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Passion Overload” – Press and you’ll deal a single powerful Pyro attack. Hold and Bennet will attack more times, finally unleashing an explosive attack that launches him and the enemies.
  • Elemental Burst – “Fantastic Voyage” – After performing a plunging Pyro attack, Bennet creates an Inspiration Field. Characters in the field get a health buff if their HP is below 70%, or an ATK buff if it’s above that. They’ll also get the Pyro status

Chongyun

  • Element – Cryo
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Spirit Blade – Chonghua’s Layered Frost” – An AoE Cryo attack that’s followed up by a Frost Field that changes the attacks of Polearm, Sword and Great-Sword wielders within it to Cryo.
  • Elemental Burst – “Spirit Blade – Cloud-parting Star” – Chongyun summons three giant swords that explode, dealing massive AoE Cryo damage and launching enemies.

Klee

  • Element – Pyro
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Jumpy Dumpty” – A bouncing Pyro-infused creature that deals Pyro AoE damage before splitting into mines that explode when enemies come into contact with them.
  • Elemental Bursts – “Sparks ‘n’ Splash” – Continuously summons Sparks ‘n’ Splash to deal AoE Pyro attacks to nearby enemies.

Traveller (Anemo)

  • Element – Anemo
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Palm Vortex” – A vortex of Anemo damage lashes the enemies in front of you. The skill finishes with a final burst of even more powerful Anemo damage.
  • Elemental Burst – “Gust Surge” – A tornado drags in enemies and objects and causes massive Anemo damage. You can blend it with other elements on the battlefield to make it more powerful.

Traveller (Geo)

  • Element – Geo
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Starfell Sword” – Launch a meteorite onto the battlefield to deal AoE Geo damage. The meteorite can be climbed and used to block attacks as well.
  • Elemental Burst – “Wake of Earth” – Send out shockwaves through the earth that deal AoE Geo damage. The edge of the waves creates a wall that can be used to block attacks.

C Tier

They’re the sort of characters you’re going to use when you have to, but that you’re going to look to replace whenever you can.

Beidou

  • Element – Electro
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Tidecaller” – Swipes a powerful forward-facing Electro attack if pressed. If held, creates an Electro shield that absorbs damage and unleashes a powerful Electro attack when the duration of the skill ends.
  • Elemental Burst – “Stormbreaker” – Creates a Thunderbeast’s Targe around Beidou. This creates chains of Electro damage when Normal and Charged attacks land. It also increases resistance to interruption and reduces the damage Beidou takes.

Kaeya

  • Element – Cryo
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Frostgnaw” – Kaeya unleashes a blast of Cryo that damages any enemies in front of him.
  • Elemental Burst – “Glacial Waltz” – Kaeya summons three icicles that follow him around and deal Cryo damage to any enemies they touch for the duration of the skill.

Lisa

  • Element – Electro
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Violet Arc” – Press and Lisa releases a homing Orb that deals Electro damage and grants the Conductive status to enemies in its AoE. Hold and she’ll deal massive Electro damage to nearby enemies.
  • Elemental Burst – “Lightning Rose” – Lisa summons a rose made of lightning that attacks nearby enemies for Electro damage and knocks them back.

Ningguang

  • Element – Geo
  • Role – DPS
  • Elemental Skill – “Jade Screen” – Creates a screen that deals Geo AoE damage and blocks enemy projectiles.
  • Elemental Burst – “Starshatter” – Ningguang summons a bunch of gems and hurls them at her foes. These deal huge Geo damage. If a Jade Screen is active at the same time, it’ll toss some more projectiles in for good measure.

Noelle

  • Element – Geo
  • Role – Healer
  • Elemental Skill – “Breastplate” – Creates a shield around allies that also deals Geo damage to foes. Noelle’s attacks have a chance to regenerate health for allies.
  • Elemental Burst – “Sweeping Time” – Unleashes a powerful AoE Geo attack, then increases the AoE of Noelle’s attacks, converts all her damage to Geo and increases her attack power.

Sucrose

  • Element – Anemo
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Astable Anemohypostasis Creation – 6308” – Summons a wind spirit that deals Anemo damage to enemies in its AoE, pulls them towards itself and then launches them.
  • Elemental Burst – “Forbidden Creation – Isomer 75 / Type II” – Creates a larger wind spirit that pulls and launches enemies in its AoE and deals massive Anemo damage. Can also be combined with other elemental attacks to deal more damage.

Xingqiu

  • Element – Hydro
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Guhua Sword – Fatal Rainscreen” – Deals out two Hydro damage attacks and then creates a number of Rain Swords that soak up damage.
  • Elemental Burst – “Guhua Sword – Raincutter” – Xingqiu fights with an illusory sword. Normal attacks trigger Hydro damage attacks after them, and Rain Swords protect him. These buffs are also applied to all other friendly characters.

D Tier

No thanks. Only use them if you don’t have any other option.

Amber

  • Element – Pyro
  • Role – Support
  • Elemental Skill – “Explosive Puppet” – Amber throws out Baron Bunny. This puppet taunts enemies and draws their fire, then deals Pyro AoE damage when it dies.
  • Elemental Burst – “Fiery Rain” – Fiery arrows rain down from the sky, dealing Pyro damage over their AoE.
