Fisch Appraisal Guide – Should You Appraise Your Fish?

Let me just count each individual scale to tell you if this fish is an A-grade or B-grade… Kidding! This Fisch Appraisal Guide tells you what appraisal does, the few rewards from performing it, and if it’s worth doing to your prized possessions.

Fish Appraisal Guide

Appraisal is the act of having a professional grade your Fish with the hopes of having them fetch a higher price when resold. To appraise a fish, visit the Appraiser NPC located on Moosewood Island, which sits behind a desk to the left of the Moosewood Merchant NPC. Appraising a Fish costs 450C$, and the chances of a successful appraisal are slim unless you meet certain conditions.

Regardless of whether you get a good or bad appraisal, you’ll leave with either fuller pockets or a new title! If you succeed in gaining the Appraiser’s approval on a Fish, you’ll unlock the ‘True Hakari’ Title, and a failed appraisal will give the ‘Unlucky Better’ Title. (The DEVs missed a joke opportunity to name it Unlucky Betta!)

Mutated Fish

Fish with any mutated genetics fetch for more (I linked a handy guide above that gives a deep-dive analysis!). Despite this, the rarity of the mutated fish may not make it more valuable than the cost of appraisal. For example, a Common Fish with a Mutation will often still sell for less than the cost to appraise it despite the value increasing.

During the appraisal of a Mutant fish, the chosen fish might lose its mutation once handed back to the player if the grading was unsuccessful. But hey, at least you get a title out of it!

Rarity Of The Fish

Similar to Mutations, the rarity of a fish impacts its value once appraised. Since the cost of appraisal remains the same regardless of fish rarity, it’s worth only emptying your pockets on an appraisal if the fish you’re grading is a higher rarity fish, or better, a high rarity mutated fish!

Is Appraisal Worth It?

For the titles, yes! But overall, it’s a high-risk low-reward scenario. Even with high rarity and/or mutated fish, you’re not guaranteed a successful appraisal. I think it’s worth it if you’re Title hunting, or have the cash to spare and feel good about your odds based on the tips I gave to secure a successful appraisal.
