When you’re walking through the levels, your aim should be to pick up anything suffused with a green glow. Usually that’s cash, but if you follow the rule that green is good, you’ll do just fine. By the same token, you should avoid anything that’s red – red things will set you back and take your cash. Bad red things.
Water will clean you up pretty darn quickly. It’s especially useful on the car and dress levels when you start off a bit stinky. You can also use it to cleanse yourself of any ickiness you pick up during your walks. If you’re not dirty, there’s no penalty for passing through the water.
At the end of the level you should spend your cash on upgrading and adding to your house. There doesn’t seem to be any actual in-game benefits for this, but it’s nice to have nice things. Once you’ve completed a house you’ll get another, bigger one. Because that’s what happens in real life?
When you’re chasing a cheating partner, you need to pass through the speed gates. Don’t worry about what they’re doing – the gates don’t work for them. Instead head for the space that’s going to give you the biggest speed boost. It’ll wear off after a while so you’ll need to chain together gates to catch the philanderer.
In the ring-making levels you need to smash the stones you’re carrying to start to turn them into jewels. Miss this important step and nothing you do afterwards is going to make any difference. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t do it, but if you want to make a nice ring, smash those rocks.
