One of the more interesting parts of Dragon Ball Legends, the Bandai Namco mobile fighting game based on the insanely popular and long-lived manga and anime franchise, is that it features a brand new character created specifically for the game. Shallot is a Saiyan who doesn’t even know he’s a Saiyan thanks to a case of amnesia (maybe even explosive amnesia, as Calculon might say) and thus is kind of surprised when he is thrown into the deep end of the kind of battles that await him.

Shallot has you to help him out, which definitely is a plus. He also can join forces with whichever fighters you recruit to your team, and that’s what we’re discussing here. Because like a ton of other mobile games, Dragon Ball Legends has a rarity system that makes you instantly want to get the best characters on your side. The difference is that the rarity ranks have different names than you might expect.

Forget about rare, super rare and any other terms you might have heard a thousand times by now. Dragon Ball Legends has just three character ranks at launch:

  • Hero – 0 stars
  • Extreme – 1 star
  • Sparking – 2 stars

Will there be more? Considering that Sparking fighters begin with just two stars, one would say almost assuredly so.

But that’s for down the road. What you need to know right now is how to get Extreme and Sparking characters on your side, especially since poor Shallot begins the game as a Hero. Surprisingly, Dragon Ball Legends doesn’t make it all that obvious to recruit fighters at all, as the main game screen doesn’t even have a button for summons. Without further ado …

How to summon Sparking or Extreme fighters

First, tap the ‘Menu’ button in the bottom-right corner of the main menu. That will take you to a screen with a variety of buttons, and you want the one that says ‘Summon.’ Tapping it will take you to a screen that looks something like this:

From here, you can use Chrono Crystals, the game’s premium currency, to acquire new fighters. Along with the normal summons, there are always Event and sometimes Featured summons that are running at any given time, and you can switch between them using the tabs up top. The difference between them is the specific characters available in each summon (though there is some overlap), which you can check by tapping on the ‘Featured Characters’ button for each summon.

Tapping on the ‘Z Power List’ will fill you in on exactly how many Z Powers you can get and the odds of one summon granting you some for any particular character. You can think of Z Powers in a similar fashion to character shards from other mobile games, in that you collect them and then need a certain amount to unlock the character, then need more to increase their star rank. Every summon guarantees you enough Z Powers to unlock a character; however, it does not guarantee they will be for one you don’t already own.

Even the normal summon gives you a chance at a Z Power for a Sparking or Extreme fighter, though the odds for them are much lower than Hero characters. For example, the Ultra Space-Time Summon available at worldwide launch offered a five percent chance of a Sparking Z Power and a 20 percent chance at Extreme — so a one in four chance overall at getting someone better than a Hero.

All of this is a lengthy way of saying that getting a Sparking or Extreme character in Dragon Ball Legends is the luck of the draw, though you can also earn Z Powers playing through the game’s events. Keep at it and save those Chrono Crystals and you’ll have some to assist Shallot before too long.
