Sometime in the near future, a ruthless African dictator named Boombata has raised an army of zombies and sent them out to conquer the world. As all of Earth’s major cities are slowly overrun by hordes of undead, over in Transylvania the vampires are furious. Vampires like to think of themselves as the ultimate evil on the planet, but Boombata’s zombie army threatens that position. And so, the vampires decide to take up arms against the zombies – and inadvertently save the world in the process.
Despite all this talk of the evil undead, Vampires vs Zombies is actually a cartoonish game that’s full of humor. Basic gameplay involves harvesting resources for the war effort, which in our case was pumpkins. Unlike most time management games, we weren’t actually controlling the characters in the game. Instead, the vampire farmers wandered around on their own, popping pumpkins out of the ground, and it was our job to zap any zombies that showed up, along with obstacles they tried to put in our way that could harm the vampires. When pumpkins appeared, we had to click on them to send them to the storage silo, and when we had gathered enough, send them to market to earn cash.
Cash can be spent in the lab, where the vampire’s mad scientist is feverishly developing new technology and research. For example, he discovered that Jack-O-Lanterns confuse zombies because they mistake them for real heads and try to take the brains out. And so, during the next level we could purchase the Pumpkin Cutter to turn our pumpkins into Jack-O-Laterns, which fetch a better price down at the market.
Each level has different goals, such as producing a certain amount of cash, a certain number of resources, or buying a certain number of helpers. If you don’t defend your helpers from the zombie attacks, they can lose all of their hearts and perish, so you have to stay alert and have a quick clicking finger.
Vampires vs Zombies is certainly something a little different, and later this week you’ll be able to check it out for yourself when it launches on Alawar Games.
