The quest begins again

And just like that, the free-to-play MMO market just got very interesting.

Today, top-tier developers EA and Bioware have announced Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar. It will be cross-platform for iPad and PC. It will be free to play. It will be huge. Old school MMO gamers might need to take a moment and sit down.

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar

If you’re one of those “normal” people wondering why a few of your select friends are bursting into tears of joy, don’t worry: this game is for you, too. The Ultima franchise is one of the great grandfathers of modern RPGs that dates as far back as the early 80s. Its 1997 installment, Ultima Online, is often credited as the first major MMORPG. Giving the reins of Ultima to the RPG masters at Bioware is bound to make an incredible impact.

“As huge fans of the Ultima franchise, the team at BioWare Mythic is not only excited to be able to bring this reimagining of the original rich world to the fans of the classic RPGs, but also to introduce a new generation of gamers who have never had a chance to discover why this is one of our industry’s most beloved worlds,” said Eugene Evans, Studio GM at BioWare Mythic.

Little is known so far about the specific details in the return to Britannia, but character models for the fighter and mage, alongside a chance to sign up for the game’s open beta, are available at ultimaforever.com. It’s been a long wait for Ultima fans, but with such a strong lineup of developers and producers, we’d say the series is in pretty good hands.
