The Snowman and the Snowdog Preview

You can rely on some things happening every Christmas: spending too much money, eating too many mince pies, and movies like It’s A Wonderful Life, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and The Snowman being rolled out on TV. This winter, though, there’s going to be something of a surprise-a sequel to the 1982 film the Snowman, called The Snowman and the Snowdog.

Because all good sequels feature a dog made of snow.

The good news is that it’s been fully approved by the creators of the original movie, and that there will also be a charming game tie-in. The game version has been developed by Crash Lab, a team of veteran game designers based in the UK. It features a ‘full 3D world’ with areas including London and the British countryside lovingly recreated in The Snowman’s distinctive pencil-framed style.

The three characters will fly through the air on a pre-determined route while you, the player, have to keep them airborne by touching the snowflakes that cascade past. There will also be a series of choices to make and various extras and achievements to collect. The soundtrack is composed of tracks from the film as well as some exclusive music from the composers recorded specifically for the game.

The development team promises that there will be all sorts of Easter eggs to discover—for example, if you shake your handheld device in the same way you would a snow globe, snow will fall in the game world.

The Snowman and the Snowdog will be free to play with some “light monetization,” which will include the ability to turn off ads, fly faster and make the items you need to collect larger and easier to find. We’ve seen it first hand and it looks magical, and an absolute must-play Christmas game for all ages. It’s out on December 9 in the UK, and will be released sometime next year, along with the film, in the US.
