Gamezebo editor-in-chief Jim Squires has done an excellent job getting me into the CFL this season (go Stampeders!). And you know what? I’m not the only one in the States that has taken notice to football in the North, with a recent study suggesting that 22 percent of Americans between 18 and 34 claiming they follow the CFL.
Alas, Glu’s Tap Sports Football isn’t a CFL game, meaning Jim will have to keep dreaming, but it’s also live in Canada right now, suggesting that this hasn’t been my weakest segue ever. Like the company’s Tap Sports Baseball, it has a license from the players association but not the league, meaning it features real NFL players — including New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who is the face of the game — with generic helmets and uniforms.
As far as the gameplay goes, Tap Sports Football touts simple, one-touch controls and short gameplay sessions and real strategy decisions. Considering the latter are summed up as choices to “run, pass, sack, elude defenders, kick a field goal, punt the ball,” we shouldn’t expect this one to delve too deep into the X’s and O’s of football, but since few people really understand those anyway, that’s probably a good thing.
Tap Sports Baseball has always done an excellent job of distilling America’s former pastime down to the essence of the pitcher-batter match-up, so if Glu has done something similar with Tap Sports Football, it should be a fun way to get your football fix in bite-sized chunks.
