I’ve never been much for sports, but as a Canadian, there’s a certain amount of hockey that runs through my veins. My blood is basically 2% hockey, 98% maple syrup. Whenever a mobile game comes along that puts a new spin on the delicate ice dance with sticks, that 2% of my blood warms up a bit. And Slap Shots! is a game that might just bring it to boiling.

Crafted by my fellow Canadians at Frosty Pop Corps (Teeter, Ten Large), Slap Shots! looks like it could be the love child of table hockey and Tiger Woods Golf. Then again, the developers are calling it a “billiards-foosball-arcade-hockey-hybrid,” so what do I know?

From what we can gleam from the trailer, Slap Shots sees your hockey hero spinning around, only stopping to power up and take a slap shot at the net. The challenge? The nets are moving, meaning you’ll need to time, aim, and power your shots perfectly if you want to trip the goal light.

The team at Frosty Pop Corps are promising a surprising amount of strategy, PvP (both online and same device), and 108 characters to unlock with more to come.

BONUS FOR CANADIAN PRIDE: You’ll be able to buy a character based on Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip (and Canadian of the Year in most of our hearts), and all proceeds from this character’s purchase will go to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research at the Sunnybrook Foundation. What’s not to like about that?

If you’ve been looking for a fun, fresh twist on ice hockey, you won’t have to wait long. Slap Shots! is coming to iOS on January 26th — just in time for the NHL All-Star Weekend.
