Saturday Morning RPG wants to take your entire childhood and distill it into a video game

You know what would have made a great role playing game? He-Man. Or maybe G.I. Joe. Or how about Jem? Am I losing you on this premise? I hope not, because the folks at Mighty Rabbit Studio seem to feel the same way I do about the televised treasure of childhood in the eighties, and their shaping those feelings into playable form in the upcoming spoof/homage of eighties cartoon culture Saturday Morning RPG.

Players will take up the mantle of Marty, a young man who has been given the power to channel magic from everyday objects. He’ll use these powers as he battles Commander Hood, a villain bent on world domination that look suspiciously like Cobra Commander.

As you can see from the teaser trailer above, every inch of this game seems to be covered in a thick layer of 1980s nostalgia. Marty uses an Atari 2600 joystick to summon a Pong battle and the dragon/duck from Adventure. He fights with the magic power of the keytar, and even does battle with a pig-faced Skeletor lookalike that we’ve learned is named “Skeleboar.”

The game itself will be released as self-contained episodes, but players will be able to take their experience and stats with them to each episode, creating a more unified gaming experience. What’s more, you can play the episodes in any order you like.

Expect to see the first episode arrive on the App Store around January 2012, with an Android version to follow at a later date.
