Once upon a time, a man named Peter Molyneux — one of the more ambitious and outspoken members of gaming royalty — lead the development of a little game called Dungeon Keeper. For those of you who have never played it, do yourself a favor and buy a copy — it can be easily found as a digital download in the wilds of the internet. For those of you who have played it, I’ll bet you remember it fondly.

For those of you who have played it, I’ll bet you remember it fondly.
It took a gaming trope and turned it on its head. Instead of playing the gallant hero who raids and plunders those deep, dark dungeons that seem to occupy every hill and cave of fantasy worlds, you play the master of that dungeon. It’s your job to prepare the dungeon — to ready it against pesky, self-righteous adventurers. And oh what fun it was.
That’s why you should be excited for Pocket Dungeon. According to developer Uncanny Games, it is “in the vein of Dungeon Keeper.” I hope that means “directly inspired by,” because if Uncanny Games manages to put out something with half the charm and deep strategy of Dungeon Keeper, then they have a hit on their hands.
Pocket Dungeon will have everything you expect from a mobile game; stylized 3D graphics, ubersocial multiplayer, and — though I’m not certain about this — I’ll bet my keyboard there’s an in-game store too. Instead of prepping your dungeon for an attack from AI invaders ala Dungeon Keeper, you’ll be prepping it for attacks from other players. You’ll build up your dungeon from scratch, placing traps and recruiting monsters and other henchman to do your bidding. And once you feel like the homefront is secure, you’ll be able to set out and loot other players’ dungeons yourself.
Prepare yourself for a November release on iOS and Android. I have a feeling I might lose some free time.
