Pirates Ahoy Adds Fighting, Building To Treasure-Hunting
Playfish is rarely a company content to just clone a competitor’s game. Instead, you can expect Playfish to add some sort of twist or extra feature to their entry in a genre. For Playfish’s new treasure-hunting game, Pirates Ahoy!, the company has added a pirate theme complete with a customizable ship, an island stronghold, and monsters to fight.
So what about the treasure-hunting? Well, it’s tied into the monster-fighting. You begin by roaming the world map, which is dotted with islands, rocks, and lots of creatures. You can fight creatures, with your level and which badges you’re using determining how well the battle goes. Some monsters drop treasure maps, which then lead you to islands where you can spend energy to pull up treasure from tiles.

You don’t just start collecting treasure in Pirates Ahoy, though. Treasures in this game are ancient and not in the best of shape. Using gems and precious metals you find through fighting and exploring, you instead refurbish your treasures until they shine with their former splendor. Once refinished, you can take treasures to your island stronghold and use them as decoration.

You can also use your stronghold to build a little town, complete with workshops that you can use to earn money. You can also get money while treasure-hunting, though in smaller amounts. You can spend money to customize your boat, which you can build into something really special with the pricier parts, or to decorate your island with buildings. You can also expand your island by buying more tiles of ground.

The social dimension of Pirates Ahoy involves building up your pirate crew by inviting other friends who play the game. As you increase the size of your crew, you gain more energy to spend on digging up treasure and fighting monsters. Right now Pirates Ahoy is a surprisingly polished game to be only two weeks old, with lots of locations to visit and treasures to collect. It’s definitely worth a look if you enjoy treasure-collecting games.
