Monopoly Hotels puts a freemium towers twist on a board game favorite
From Hotel City to Tap Pet Hotel, managing a bustling accommodations business has been a big hit with freemium audiences in the last few years. But if you’re going to go into the hotels business, wouldn’t you want to consult the very best? Rich Uncle Pennybags, aka “Mr. Monopoly,” has been building hotels on Boardwalk since 1935!

Available for download on the Canadian App Store (and available worldwide sometime in the near future), Monopoly Hotels from Electronic Arts is an interesting mash-up of two of its most popular territories. Through their partnership with Hasbro, EA has been responsible for countless licensed board game adaptations. And since their acquisition of Playfish, they’ve had a number of popular freemium games added to their catalogue. Monopoly Hotels, it would seem, is their first big attempt to smoosh this all together.
We’ve had a chance to go hands on with the game briefly, and we can assure you that the formula doesn’t stray all that far from similar games in the genre. If you’ve played any freemium hotel management game, you’ll know what to expect here.
What sets Monopoly Hotels apart though, is its charming ties to both the original board game itself, as well as other Hasbro properties. Players will build hotels at locations like Mediterranean Avenue. The rooms are themed to match well known elements of the board, like the “Thimble Room” or the “Race Car Room,” with each catering to a specific client who brings that playing piece along with them in one fashion or another. Other special rooms can be built for VIP’s, like Mr. And Mrs. Potato Head, or characters from Hasbro’s Littlest Pet Shop franchise.

The Canadian iTunes description promises that you’ll also be able to expand your empire to things other than hotels, such as aquariums and zoos, and you’ll even get to manage utilities like the Electric Company.
There’s no word yet about when Monopoly Hotels will hit the US, but if you follow the game right here on Gamezebo, we’ll let you know the moment it becomes available!
