LEGO Minifigures Online MMO Coming to Mobile

Parents, bid a tearful farewell to your mobile phones and tablets. The kid-friendly MMO LEGO Minifigures Online is coming to iOS and Android on June 29.

LEGO Minifigures Online was already available as a browser-based web game for a while, but developer Funcom has since pulled the title to spruce it up for its cross-platform relaunch. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to play this lovely little LEGO romp on one account, across all its available platforms.

Here’s what’s interesting, though. Whereas the previous version of LEGO Minifigures Online was free, acquiring the game after its June 29 relaunch will cost money. It’s highly unusual for a company to add a price tag to a game that was previously free-to-play, but Funcom’s construction FAQ offers viable reasons for the switch:

“During the initial run of the PC version of the game, we have collected player data and feedback, and have used this to make informed decisions about the continued development of the game. The buy-to-play business model will allow us to present a more fun and engaging gaming experience that we believe will resonate better with the target audience, thus we believe that the buy-to-play business model will be more commercially viable for LEGO Minifigures Online than the free-to-play business model.”

There are no subscription fees; after paying once ($29.99 USD for Steam users, $4.99 per world for mobile users), the blocky yellow world is yours for keeps. Play nicely.
