When Google announced Cardboard earlier this year, we couldn’t decide if it was a brilliant approach to making virtual reality accessible to everyone or just a bizarre practical joke. As it turns out, Cardboard was very much the former. And in being open source, it was only a matter of time until companies started marketing Cardboard kits of their own.
A quick search on Amazon will show more than a few third-party takes on Cardboard, but the Virtual Reality Beginner’s Kit from Regan Arts has a few things going for it that seemingly put it ahead of the competition.

For one, it comes bundled with a 40-page book published by Judith Regan under her new imprint, Regan Arts. If you’re in the book world, that’s a name you’ll know has been tied with a lot of success over the years.
The book itself is co-authored by TechCrunch’s Frederic Lardinois and designer Patrick Buckley (co-founder of DODOcase). AKA, not just two random guys trying to cash in on Google’s open source kindness. (They might be cashing in, but hey – at least they know what they’re doing).

For another, they’re claiming “compatibility with all smartphones universally including the new Apple iPhone 6 and 6+.” Wrap all that up with a low price point ($25.95) and availability at brick and mortar locations like Barnes & Noble, and you’ve got a nifty little kit to stick under the Christmas tree this year.
And with games like Virtual Kaiju 3D out there… admit it, you want one.
Keep an eye out for the Virtual Reality Beginner’s Kit when it launches October 28th, or pre-order it from Amazon today at the discounted price of $19.05.
