Are you tired of all these pacifist, non-lethal card games? Wish there was more gambling in your fighting arena? Nostalgic for pixelated character portraits doing an endless psyche-up in front of a darkened background? Then you’re in luck! HeadUp Games and Stage Clear Studios are currently working on a game that combines the manic fury of competitive Blackjack and the strategic card-counting of arcade fighters. We might have that backward, but it doesn’t matter! All these features are mixed together in Super Blackjack Battle II Turbo Edition.

In case the name was any indication, SBJB2TE pays tribute to a certain “well known arcade fighting game from the ‘90s,” although we shoryuken don’t know what game they’re referring to. It features 12 different characters, each with their own storyline and unique ending, ranging from an undercover FBI agent to a South African warlord. Each character is trying to prove themselves the best Blackjack player of all time, although they of course have ulterior reasons for entering the Super Blackjack Battle.

Specific gameplay details are sparse at the moment, but SBJB2TE sounds like it will be a Blackjack tournament that progresses in fighting ladder form. We’re unsure if there will be physical battles involving cards or Blackjack hands featuring super moves, but there is sure to be some arcade over-the-topness throughout. Seriously, just look at that teaser trailer if you don’t believe us.

Super Blackjack Battle II Turbo Edition is slated to launch sometime in 2017 and will feature a single player campaign, cross-platform online matches with up to four players, and a ranked PVP mode. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one as it develops and looking forward to more stylized card-shuffling-in-a-thunderstorm character videos.

Jillian will play any game with cute characters or an isometric perspective, but her favorites are Fallout 3, Secret of Mana, and Harvest Moon. Her PC suffers from permanent cat-on-keyboard syndrome, which she blames for most deaths in Don’t Starve. She occasionally stops gaming long enough to eat waffles and rewatch Battlestar Galactica.
