Do you think Master Chief uses a Windows Phone 8?

I never thought I’d see the day when a full-fledged Halo game would be available for me to play on my tablet or smartphone, but it looks like Cortana has been using her artificial intelligence around the clock to make such thoughts become a true reality in this day and age. Today a new installment in the Halo franchise has been announced for PC and Windows mobile devices called Halo: Spartan Assault, which looks to take to the futuristic world of Master Chief and company to the realm of virtual dual-analogue third-person shooters. Intrigued yet? Just wait until you keep reading!

Developed by 343 Industries in accordance with Vanguard Games, the story of Halo: Spartan Assault is set sometime in between the storylines of Halo 3 and Halo 4, and centers on the early beginnings of the Spartan Ops program, while also diving into the background of the Human-Covenant wars. Players will get to experience the all new and innovative chapter in the Halo universe as either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis aboard the UNSC Infinity, where they will take on deadly Covenant forces in a sprawling single-player campaign that features 25 individual missions.

Halo: Spartan Assault

The first thing you’re likely to notice about Halo: Spartan Assault is that the game adopts a top-down visual approach, as opposed to the traditional first-person perspective of the series’ main console titles. But despite this different point of view, you’ll also notice pretty early on that this is still inherently a Halo game we’re dealing with here: right down to those Warthog and Ghost vehicles that become the shining stars of the first-released screenshots. The debut trailer also shows off some other Halo staples, like plasma grenades, devastating melee attacks, and of course, those futuristic yet oh-so-beautiful environments that Halo players have come to know and love.

The official fact sheet of the game promises a smooth and simple touchscreen control scheme that brings the simplicity and precision of using an actual controller to the mobile experience. And if you’re playing on a tablet, the game even allows support for you to connect your keyboard and mouse to the device. Halo: Spartan Assault will also be fully integrated with last year’s console release of Halo 4, where players can earn experience points, achievements, and exclusive emblems for their Spartan character in Halo 4‘s multiplayer modes.

Halo: Spartan Assault

Halo: Spartan Assault is set to burst onto the mobile gaming scene in July 2013 for $6.99, although the game will also feature in-app purchases for those who don’t want to grind for better upgrades or more powerful weapons and armor. The game will be exclusively available for Windows 8 PCs and tablets, as well as Windows Phone 8 devices.
