Glu goes to the shooting gallery in the upcoming Frontline Commando

Shooting gallery games have had something of a weird history on the iPhone. We had our hearts broken when we realized that Metal Gear Solid Touch was one, were thrilled when Overkill was one, and were pretty satisfied with EPOCH was one. Now Glu Games is looking to try their hand at the genre, with the upcoming release of Frontline Commando.

Players will assume the role of a lone commando, the only survivor of an ambush who’s now hell-bent on revenge.

We’ve recently had a chance to go hands-on with Frontline Commando, and found that the experience had as much in common with games like Glu’s own Contract Killer as it did with competitors like EPOCH. Sure, Frontline Commando has players moving from one cover location to another like you do in EPOCH, but the game has a very familiar structure that’s all about spending earned cash to upgrade your weapons and make sure you’re prepared with the right equipment for the next mission.

In our brief time with the game, it seemed pretty clear that missions manage to feel unique, with different elements coming into play in different missions. One had us trying to execute a particular target, for example, while another had us dodging missile while trying to run down the clock.

Likewise, different weapons handled differently, just like they need to for a title like this to work. You don’t have to worry about a sniper rifle, a shotgun, and a fully automatic combat rifle feeling a little alike – this is a game that understands the real pull of the genre is unlocking new weapons that feel markedly different from what you’ve been playing with already.

Frontline Commando will be hitting both the Android Market and iOS App Store this Thursday, December 15th.
