Dwarfs Preview

Dwarfs love to dig. Digging leads to gems and minerals (good), but can also lead to water, lava and even monsters (very bad). That’s why they need an overseer to keep them out of trouble and point them in the right direction. We spent some time with a preview copy of Dwarfs to give you our first impressions of this upcoming click management/strategy game from Power of Two.

Hands-on with Dwarfs beta

Dwarfs love to dig. Digging leads to gems and minerals (good), but can also lead to water, lava and even monsters (very bad). That’s why they need an overseer to keep them out of trouble and point them in the right direction. We spent some time with a preview copy of Dwarfs to give you our first impressions of this upcoming click management/strategy game from Power of Two.

Dwarfs

Dwarfs reminded us of the classic puzzle game Lemmings, where the goal was to guide a gaggle of creatures to safety by taking advantage of their special skills. (Some lemmings were good at digging, some could float, some could build bridges, and so on.) Without your guidance, the lemmings would happily and obliviously walk into all kinds of hazards.

Dwarfs

The dwarfs in Dwarfs are similarly single-minded. Just point them in a direction and they’ll keep digging, even if it leads them somewhere unsafe, like a big pool of underground lava. Once the lava (or water) has been disturbed, it’ll start flowing towards Town Hall and you’ll have to figure out a way to stop it (by placing gates, holes, and other barriers in its path.) Guiding the dwarfs towards treasures while keeping them away from trouble is the name of the game, and since the dwarfs never stop moving you’ll soon have your hands full.

Dwarfs

In campaign mode you’ll progress through various missions and sub-quests. There’s also an arcade mode with time-based challenges, a “Defend the Town Hall” mode that involves fending off waves of enemies, and a sandbox mode where you can create your own levels.

Dwarfs

Dwarfs should be released on Steam and at retail sometime this fall. If you’d like to be notified the instant this game is released, be sure to set an alert!
