Square-Enix’s Bravely Default is a fantastic job-based role-playing game for the Nintendo 3DS. Its sequel, Bravely Second, is likewise for the Nintendo 3DS and should hit Japan sometime in spring of 2015.
Ah, but the soft winds of spring seem so far away as we teeter on the cusp of January. Thankfully, Square-Enix is giving Bravely Default fans a bridge with Bravely Archive: D’s Report, a mobile RPG.
Like the 3DS games, Bravely Archive puts emphasis on acquiring and changing jobs. Most of the vocations should be familiar for Bravely Default fans (and Final Fantasy fans, for that matter). There’s your classic White Mage and Black Mage, the swift Ninja, the noble Dragoon, and the honey-voiced Performer.
Bravely Archive’s story takes place a long time after the events of the 3DS Bravely games. You take on the role of a librarian who’s travelling around the world to gather memories sealed in crystals. You are, in other words, bravely archiving.
Bravely Archive’s turn-based battle system utilizes flicking mechanics, so at least your fingers will stay in shape as you play. The game is free-to-play for iOS and Android, and hits Japan in January. There’s no word yet on a possible English-language release. Given the surprise success of Bravely Default in the West, it wouldn’t be surprising.
