Atlas Raider Preview
Remember back when we played board games on physical boards? What a bunch of suckers we were. These days it’s all about digital board games, a genre (if you want to call it that) that’s become quite popular thanks to the smartphone/social media boom. But while many of them are virtual adaptations of preexisting games, Atlas Raider‘s first release will be a digital one. This begs the question: if a game was never printed on an actual board, is it really fair to call it a board game?

A board game without that pesky board part.
Remember back when we played board games on physical boards? What a bunch of suckers we were. These days it’s all about digital board games, a genre (if you want to call it that) that’s become quite popular thanks to the smartphone/social media boom. This begs the question: if a game was never printed on an actual board, is it really fair to call it a board game?
I’m going to go ahead and say it’s fair, but only so we can move on to what’s really important here: you can fight snakes in Atlas Raider. Having been screwed over by many a serpent in Chutes and Ladders, I can’t help but get excited about how cathartic beating up a snake will be. But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Snake combat or not, Atlas Raider is a game about tracking down your missing father. That may sound like an intimidating task, but as a seasoned treasure hunter, you know a thing or two about tracking down missing items (or people, in this case).
And despite being a board game, there’s more to the gameplay than just rolling the die and moving around the terrain. You’ll take on a variety of missions, harvest crops, and constantly learn more about the land you’re exploring. There will also be battles (not all of which are against snakes!), and playable characters which you can unlock. I’d like to see you do any of these things in the subpar experience that is Monopoly.
The game doesn’t have a release date just yet, but developer CrayonPixel’s site states that it’s “coming soon.” If you wish to be alerted upon launch, be sure to click the “follow” button on top of this page!
