When you’re making a movie about video games, a video game tie-in is is pretty much inevitable.

This summer’s apocalypse-through-gaming-tropes comedy “Pixels” stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, and just about ever 80’s video game mascot you can name. And yes,  a lot of those mascots are coming together to star in a mobile game that launches ahead of the film’s July 24th release.

“The free mobile game offers an innovative twist on traditional tower defense game mechanics,” reads today’s official press release. “Players can take the role of the heroic Arcaders from the film to defeat aliens before they destroy the world.”

While only three classic characters have been named for inclusion so far — Pac-Man, Q*Bert and Frogger — they promise “other iconic gaming characters from the 80’s” will be included at launch. Development is being handled by Bandai Namco (hence the inclusion of Pac-Man), so don’t be surprised if the deck is stacked with Namco notables like Dig Dug and Galaga.

No word on Donkey Kong, but considering his appearance in the movie trailer (above), we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Jim Squires is the Editor-in-Chief of Gamezebo. Everything you see passes his eyes first, so we like to think of him as "the gatekeeper of cool stuff." He likes good games, great writing, and just can't say no to a hamburger. Also, he is not a bear.
