I don’t generally go for platformers, but A Walk in the Dark has me hooked already. It tells the story of Arielle and her cat, Bast, who decide one summer afternoon to take a stroll through the forest. But when Bast, overcome by the excitement of the moment, becomes separated from Arielle, the woods take a turn for the sinister: he finds himself trapped by some ancient, malevolent force, and can only watch as Arielle is enveloped by “the Spirit” and taken away. He is alone. And he must save her.

Graphically, A Walk in the Dark immediately conjures thoughts of the hit platformer Limbo, with its dark, monochromatic foreground and dream-like backdrops. But the platforming action appears to be far more challenging; Flying Turtle Software says the difficulty progression is reasonably smooth, which should allow most gamers to handle what’s thrown at them, but the gameplay trailer shows off reversing gravity, hazards both stationary and moving, and the kind of running and jumping action that will take some seriously fleet fingers to pull off.
And yet the story is intriguing, the visual style is fantastic, and what I’ve heard of the soundtrack so far is absolutely superb. This is most definitely a game to keep an eye on.
A Walk in the Dark is being developed exclusively for the PC, and is currently expected to be out by the end of the year.
