Kingdom Hearts has always occupied a weird space in the gaming scene. Blending elements of Disney and Final Fantasy into an action-RPG, it’s become something of a perennial favorite among gamers who appreciate it’s very particular niche.

The series has seen entries on a wide variety of platforms (including 2008’s Japan-exclusive mobile game Kingdom Hearts coded), so I suppose it was only inevitable that we’d see a version aimed at iOS and Android gamers eventually.

Nothing’s official — not yet — but in an interview with series creator Tetsuya Nomura, Japanese gaming publication Famitsu has learned that something for mobile devices is likely to be announced at Disney’s D23 Expo in Japan this November.

Development on Kingdom Hearts III is going smoothly, but there will also be new announcements connected to it. As one of those new announcements, I think we should be able to announce a smartphone-specific development for the series in short order.

The announcement of an upcoming announcement seems like a strange thing to report on, but when Kingdom Hearts is involved, you’ll forgive us for getting a little giddy.

Keep your Mickey-sized ears to the ground for news of a new Kingdom Hearts game to be announced this November. In the meantime, you can go back to keeping your fingers crossed for Square Enix’s other big upcoming mobile release to make it’s way West, Mobius Final Fantasy.
