There are so many new games released on the App Store and Google Play Store every month that sometimes it’s incredibly difficult to keep track of what’s good, what’s bad and what’s sitting somewhere in between. Which is why, as curators of mobile gaming, we write lists like this one. 

We’ve picked the very best new games that came out in August and put them in one handy place. There are big games, small games and everything in between. We reckon there’s going to be something for everyone in this cavalcade of mobile gaming goodness.

Meteorfall: Krumit’s Tale

The sequel to one of the best solitaire card games out there. This one expands on everything that made the original so entertaining, throwing in new ideas and bigger concepts to create something really special.

There’s a huge challenge, loads to explore and a vast array of different cards to collect. And every time you play you’re going to be left with a massive smile on your face. If you’ve got even the slightest interest in card games you should definitely pick this one up.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition

Probably one of the very best Final Fantasy spin-off games has finally come to mobile. It’s a bright and daring co-operative action RPG that sees you heading out on an engaging adventure to collect crystal power for your village.

Filled with interesting characters and amazing dungeons, it’s hard not to fall in love with everything that Crystal Chronicles has to offer. Throw in cross platform multiplayer and you’re left with an absolute must-buy.

Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad

A mid-core RPG that draws on characters and setting from around the Tom Clancy digital universe. You’ll be teaming up units from Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, Rainbow 6 and more to take down a terrorist threat.

There’s a whole bunch to do here, from taking on other players to working your way through the story in the campaign. Challenges, achievements and loot mean there’s always something to fight for as well.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

One of the best visual novels out there is now available in the palm of your hand. It’s a massive experience that’s packed full of brilliant ideas and bright sparks of ingenuity. Oh and a cast of characters that you’re going to fall completely in love with.

Fans of the genre are going to lap this one up, but even if you haven’t experienced a visual novel before it’s well worth checking out. It’s weird, it’s engaging and it’s going to stick in your head long after you’ve put it down.

Robotics

Build robots, fight robots, make your robots more powerful. That’s the basic equation behind Robotics. It’s a surprisingly addictive loop. Throw in some robo-programming and you’re left with an experience that’s just weighty enough to keep you coming back for more.

The battles here are fast, furious and just the right side of ridiculous. And there’s always an opponent waiting for you. Robotics is one of those games that fills up a space in your day nicely.

Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition

One of the greatest RPGs ever is now available in the palm of your hand. Okay, so it’s been available on Android for a while, but you can get it on iOS now too. It’s a massive, deeply engrossing game built around the D&D template. Expect quests, fights and all sorts of weird and wonderful characters.

The game has been poked and preened to make sure it works brilliantly on touchscreen, but you might want to play this one on a device with as big a screen as possible. There are hours and hours of gameplay to sink your teeth into, and you’re going to want to experience everything Neverwinter Nights has to offer.

Eve Echoes

The legendary MMO now has a mobile version. It’s separate but connected to the original Eve, and sees you heading out into an alternate universe to write your own story. A story involving spaceships, trading, battles and giant corporations that you can join forces with.

There hasn’t been a really big MMO release on mobile in a while, but Eve Echoes certainly fits the bill. It offers a vast array of gaming riches and if it sinks your teeth into you, you’re going to lose months of your life to it.

Gogogo!

A same-device multiplayer extravaganza for three to 16 players. Gogogo! offers 50 different challenges for you and your friends or family to compete in. All of them are fun, all of them are unique and all of them are going to leave you with a massive smile on your face.

There are a lot of gloomy games on mobile, but this definitely isn’t one of them. There’s a bright joy to Gogogo! that’s going to lighten even the gloomiest of days. If you haven’t tried it yet, rectify that fact immediately.

Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla is an unbelievably tight platform battler that sees you taking on other players in fast and furious fist-fights. There’s a lightness to the scrapping and the leaping that makes the whole experience super fast and super furious.

The game controls surprisingly well on touchscreen devices, and still manages to capture the zany madness of the console versions of the game. There aren’t many games like Brawlhalla on mobile, and everything it does it does brilliantly well.

Gun Rounds

It’s weird to think of a turn-based game being inspired by the furious vertical blasting of Downwell, but that’s exactly what Gun Rounds is. It’s a gorgeous looking retro game with some wonderful ideas that is going to keep you on your toes at all times.

It takes a little while to get used to, but once it clicks you’ll find yourself loving every second of the experience. This is a unique and supremely entertaining experience and you definitely need to check it out.

Motorball

This one is an amazing top-down take on Rocket League. Two cars enter the arena, driving around and whacking a ball. The aim of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. The matches are super short, but they’re packed full of wonderfully exciting moments.

There are a few twists to the formula, with boosts and power-ups littering the arenas. It’s almost impossible to play Motorball without grinning from ear to ear, and in these dark times that’s really something.

Otherworld Legends

A neat hack-and-slash dungeon crawler that sees you leading a character through a series of subterranean rooms. They’re filled with monsters, loot and secret doors. It’s up to you to slice everything that moves, find the loot and get out alive.

It’s not the most original game in the world, but it does everything it sets out to do with aplomb. The violence is swift and slick and you’ll rarely be able to just have one go. What more do you want from a mobile game than that?

Numsol

To finish off this month’s round-up we’ve got Numsol. It’s an unbelievably simple card game of multiplication that sees you matching cards to double up their numbers. You’re aiming to clear the board, but that’s not always possible.

That just makes it more likely that you’re going to jump back in for another go, though. This is a simple and engaging experience that’s brilliant for those little snatched moments of gaming fun that smartphones are perfect for.
