Looking over the games we played in August, it’s hard to not wonder how many of these will end up on our “Games of the Year” list this December. There’s no way to know, of course, but there are certainly plenty of great candidates.

If you missed any of these games this month, carve some time out of your schedule to go back and play them. These are eight great mobile games you won’t want to miss.

Lara Croft GO

Square Enix has been doing some really cool things with their franchises lately, taking them into different territories while still maintaining their core appeal. Hitman: Sniper was a great example, and so is Lara Croft GO: a turn-based puzzle game starring Tomb Raider’s iconic heroine.

Pac-Man 256

PacMan256_Ghosts

What happens when you cross the iconic maze-play of Pac-Man with the endless retro shenanigans of Hipster Whale, creators of Crossy Road? A fantastic game of Pac-Man with power-ups, new ghosts, and a never-ending wave of doom rushing up behind you.

Galactic Keep

It may have taken six years to launch, but Galactic Keep was well worth the wait. Fans of tabletop RPG-style storytelling, dice-rolling and token moving would be fools to miss this one.

Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon

Spider: The Curse of Bryce Manor was one of the first indie hits on the App Store, so it’s only fitting that the team responsible should revisit the world of arachnids. There’s more puzzling this time around, which makes it feel more like a game than an experience. Whether or not that’s a good thing is up to you.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3

After the train wreck (coaster crash?) that was RCT4 Mobile, series fans have been clamoring for something a little closer to the real thing. Much to our surprise and delight, Frontier Developments stepped up to the plate this month, bringing the complete and much-loved RCT3 experience to mobile devices.

Bullet Boy

Donkey Kong Country fans, this is for you. Taking the barrel-shooting elements of Nintendo’s classic and building an entire game around them, Bullet Boy is a fantastic arcade challenge with a very specific retro appeal.

Ski Safari 2

Absolute silliness distilled into an endless mountain ride. If you have any love in your heart for the original Ski Safari or any of the games it inspired (Alto’s Adventure, for example), Ski Safari 2 should easily win your heart.

Sage Solitaire

As it turns out, card games aren’t as dull and grandmotherly as you think. There’s plenty of room for ingenuity still, and that’s exactly what developer Zach Gage has brought to the 52-card deck. It’s a little bit poker, a little bit solitaire, and wildly addictive in all the right ways.

Jim Squires is the Editor-in-Chief of Gamezebo. Everything you see passes his eyes first, so we like to think of him as "the gatekeeper of cool stuff." He likes good games, great writing, and just can't say no to a hamburger. Also, he is not a bear.
