Man, oh man. There are weeks, and then there are weeks. If you’re a fan of mobile gaming, the App Store and Google Play have basically exploded with goodness. Surprise launches have been flying in from left and right.
You’re probably going to need to book a few days off work if you plan to play them all — and yes, you really should.
Lumines Puzzle & Music
A mixture of rhythm and falling blocks, Lumines has been a cult favorite series among owners of PlayStation handhelds for years. This isn’t the series’ first attempt at going mobile, but there’s no question that a lot of love went into this latest version. Make matches that are swept away in time with the music, then try to build another huge combo before the timeline sweeps past again.

Samorost 3
The makers of the spectacular adventures Botanicula and Machinarium have returned to one of their earlier series for a third installment, and it’s as weird and wonderful as you’re hoping. The PC version, which released earlier this year, maintains a strong score of 80% on Metacritic.
- App Store ($4.99)
Street Fighter Puzzle Spirits
No, it’s not Puzzle Fighter — but why should the Street Fighter series limit itself to just one kind of puzzle mechanic? This one is a little more like Puzzles & Dragons, and features fantastic chibi art depicting Capcom’s ever-growing roster of fighters.

Tweechi
It’s been too long since you’ve had a new virtual pet to love and call your own. Tweechi is here to fill that void in your heart. BONUS: your activity on Twitter can feed Tweechi in a sense, as virtual currency boosts can be earned through your regular daily social media interactions.

Marvel Tsum Tsum
If you’re a fan of Disney Tsum Tsum already, you’ll want to jump in on this ASAP. It’s a whole new collection of roly poly personalities to assemble, this time from the Marvel universe. Tsum Tsum offers a fresh take on matching gameplay, with the playing pieces shifting as a result of realistic physics. Also, it has Spider-Man.

Lifeline: Crisis Line
The latest Lifeline text adventure has arrived, this time it’s asking you to help solve a murder. You’re no detective, though — just a volunteer with a crisis helpline, and it’s your first day on the job!
- App Store ($2.99)
- Google Play ($2.99)
BLUK
LEAP! LEAP LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT! Monument Valley-inspired visuals meet physics-based jumping in this precision-based puzzler.
- App Store ($1.99)
A New Life
Hate your life? Good news: you can finally re-roll and start over. At least virtually. A New Life is a simulator that takes you through the choices people face everyday, and then live the outcomes that result.
- App Store ($0.99)
ENYO
The creator of Card Crawl has returned to the App Store with a brand new experience, and it’s not the Card Crawl sequel! ENYO is a tactical roguelike about hook and shield mechanics. That means you can’t fight your opponents directly, but you can use your equipment and the environment to lead them to their untimely deaths. NEAT.

Siralim 2
The original Siralim is the very definition of an App Store cult classic. It never had its name in lights, but for RPG fans who played it, they couldn’t say enough good things. And yes — the sequel that launched this week should have very much the same effect. Don’t let its simple presentation fool you; this is a top notch monster-collecting RPG with an infinite amount of content.

- Google Play ($4.99)
He-Man: Tappers of Grayskull
There’s a part of me that wonders why the He-Man license keeps popping up in the 21st century, but there’s also the part of me that downloaded Tappers of Grayskull the moment it hit the App Store — so I guess there’s an audience after all, and I’m in it. This latest He-Man game to grace mobile is an idle clicker that includes voice actors from the original series.

PolitiCats
Not a He-Man fan? That’s ok — there’s another clicker worth your attention this week, and just in time for election season. PolitiCats is an idle clicker about cats and politics, and it even promises you can unlock celebrity cats, including Garfield.

Justice Monsters Five
Final Fantasy XV has become a juggernaut of marketing madness, so it should come as little surprise that the pinball game to be featured in FFXV is also available as a fully-fledged standalone mobile experience. Battle monsters with the might of pinball while you wait for the main game to drop.

Pac-Man Pop
Either I slept funny, or Pac-Man got a weird makeover. Whether this new look is permanent or just for one game is anybody’s guess at this point, but I’m planning on playing a fair bit of Pac-Man Pop before I decide my feelings on it. Not much explanation is required on this one; Pac-Man gets a bubble popper. If you’re a bubble popper fan, get on it.

Muhammad Ali: Puzzle King
Of all of 2016’s celebrity deaths, few stung like a bee quite as depressingly as Muhammad Ali’s. Before you think this is a quick cash-in on our collective sorrow though, please know that this game has been in the works for quite some time — and it offers some pretty slick match-3 style gameplay, too.

Super Duper Punch
Do you prefer your boxing to feel more like… well, boxing? Super Duper Punch may or may not help you out. It’s a weird one, but in all the right ways, with punch drunk visuals and strange, floaty gameplay.
- App Store (free)
Riff Racer
Not since the days of Audiosurf do I remember seeing a racing game tied into your own music collection. It draws on your iTunes library to create tracks — and as a bonus, Apple Music subscribers can check out playlists created especially for this game.
- App Store ($2.99)
Scurry Board
Let’s face it: you’re still not riding a real hoverboard. Scurry Board is ready to at least help you simulate the experience — and that’s a lot better than those wheely things that caught on fire could muster.
- App Store (free)
Narcos: Cartel Wars
If you’re a fan of the Netflix series Narcos, and you like base-building gameplay, Narcos: Cartel Wars is pretty much a no brainer.
- App Store (free)
- Google Play (free)
Super Powerboy
An autorunning platformer about a boy up against an alien invasion, Super Powerboy is largely about mastering the ever-changing robotic suit of armor he wraps himself in. There’s a beautiful art style at play, too. Worth a play, even if for the eye candy alone.
- App Store ($1.99)
Line Defense
From the “so obvious I can’t believe we haven’t seen this before” school of game design, Line Defense is a twist on Missile Command that has players line-drawing their defenses with their finger. If your hands are slow, I guess we’ll have to say goodbye to Paris.
- App Store (free)
Go Go Fast
I had a chance to play Go Go Fast a few months prior to its release at Pocket Gamer Connects Vancouver where it came in third place at the Big Indie Pitch. I was blown away with the amount of variety packed into this little title. The game’s underlying mechanics never really change all that much, but each vehicle you unlock comes with its own goals. You might need to make deliveries, or pick people up in a taxi, or hit ramps with your skateboard. It’s really clever stuff.
