If you had asked me last week to put together a list of upcoming iOS games I was excited about, it would probably look a lot like the list below. The only difference? These games aren’t upcoming — they’re available right now.
It would be hard to say this is what a game of the year list would look like (especially since we’ve played so few of them), but man oh man — wouldn’t it be weird if these all lived up to the hype?
Galactic Keep

I can pinch you if you like, but you’re really not dreaming. After six years since its initial announcement, the tabletop RPG homage Galactic Keep has finally hit the App Store. And yes, it’s as challenging, deep, and wonderful as you’re hoping. Our review is forthcoming.

Final Fantasy VII

If you’ve been collecting Square Enix classics on your phone (and even if you haven’t), this is the one you’ve been waiting for. Arguably the most popular RPG of all time, FF7 now fits in your pocket.

PAC-MAN 256

An endless game of PAC-MAN from the makers of Crossy Road. You’re welcome, people of Earth. (Read our review and guide if you want to learn more!)

Horizon Chase

If you grew up on racing games in the late 80’s or early 90’s, Horizon Chase is ready to take you back to your youth (and 100 miles an hour).

Dungeon of the Endless

We loved this daring team-based roguelike when it was a Steam Greenlight release, and much to our delight, its unique challenges are now playable on the iPad.

The Guides

Brutally clever, impossibly difficult puzzles. The kind you’ll need to Google to learn concepts to solve. If you like blistering difficulty, The Guides should be right up your alley. Check out our review to learn more.

Pocket God vs. Desert Ashes

If you were a fan of MechoWars back in the day (or as it was later known, Desert Ashes), you’ll want to check out this new sequel from its creator that crosses over with the much-loved world of Pocket God. It’s not unlike Advance Wars, which is a really, really good thing.

Final Fantasy Portal App

While not technically a game, the Final Fantasy Portal App has a couple of games within it — and they’re both a doozy. You can finally play an official Triple Triad release on mobile (aka, the brilliant card game from Final Fantasy VIII), and there’s a free version of the original Final Fantasy in here too.
